If you eat real ice cream, you eat raw eggs

Ummon:
Well, REAL ice cream is a little more specific - but in any case if you eat ice cream with real eggs in them, you're eating raw eggs. Ditto with mousse and other similar, non-cooked egg-based desserts. How come millions of people don't have salmonella?

Felsir:
Because the chicken that lays the egg has to be infected with Salmonella first. In most countries Salmonella infected farm-animals have to be reported by law.

16 million people are infected with salmonella each year (according to WHO). Many people are carrier as well (without developing symptoms such as fever).

Ed_McCarron:
Or real Caesar salad, or real mayonnaise, or all kinds of desserts...  Its the rare egg that has salmonella to begin with, and the human immune system is a wonderful thing.

Wiki: Egg (food)

--- Quote ---A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2002 (Risk Analysis April 2002 22(2):203-18) suggests the problem is not as prevalent as once thought. It showed that of the 69 billion eggs produced annually only 2.3 million are contaminated with salmonella - equivalent to just one in every 30,000 eggs - thus showing that salmonella infection is quite rarely induced by eggs

Only if you leave the eggs laying around in hen's poop do they contract salmonella.

BTW Why this sudden shock about raw eggs in ice cream? I'd bet most ice creams don't use raw eggs anyway. More likely some sterilized egg subsitute.

saint:
I believe they're probably pasteurized raw eggs?
