Griffin Powermate install tutorial ...Pics fixed 4/11/11
« on: May 03, 2009, 01:31:53 am »
Hello All,  ;D

I myself, as do alot of others here on BYOAC like to use the Griffin Powermate http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powermate/ for a volume knob. Those that use it, know why.

Well, after using it for a while, we have all known it to be only about 85% reliable when booting up or restarting our jukeboxes.  :soapbox:
You have to unplug then replug it in, sometimes 2-3 times for it to work.  .

Well, after some research on another forum, the name escapes me right now, I did some tweaking with the drivers. I recommend the older Griffin PM 1.5.3 drivers http://www.griffintechnology.com/software/0000/0044/PowerMate_Win_1-5-3_D.exe. The older drivers seem to work better.

The Griffin PM looks like it was primarily used for a MAC and the MAC users seem to not have any issues, but the Windows users seem to have the problems. Well, its because where Griffin installs the drivers.

So here is what I did:

Unplug the Griffin Powermate

Then open up the Device Manager (we should know how to get there)
You'll see it's under the USB Human Interface Device, Right Click for Properties

It says Location 0 (Griffin Powermate) That way you know you have the right one.

Then Select Driver

The Select Uninstall

Click OK

After you uninstall the drivers, close out the device manager, then reopen it, you'll see it's gone.

IMPORTANT!! now replug in the Griffin Powermate. The New Hardware Wizard will show up.

Select No, not at this time then click next

Then select Install from a list or specific Location (Advanced), click next

Then Follow the steps

Click Have Disk

Click Browse

When the Griffin Powermate was originally installed, it installed to c:\program files\Griffin Technology\Powermate\Driver

There you will find Powrmate.inf select it

Click OK

Then you will see the Griffin Powermate show up in the Hardware Update Wizard box

Select Next

Select Continue Anyway

You'll see the files transfering

Then you'll see the install complete. click Finish. Your Griffin Powermate should be on.

Now close Device Manager, then reopen it. You should now see that the Griffin Powermate is listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Click on Griffin Powermate and then right click properties. Select Drivers.

You'll see that the drivers are now from Griffin Technology, Inc instead of the generic Microsoft USB Human interface device as we saw earlier.

Now your Griffin Powermate should start everytime! ;D ;D

Go ahead, restart your jukebox, during the restart, you'll see the Griffin Powermate pulsesate then it will go dim, then Start right up! I have done about 60 restarts and have been testing for the last 45 days a cold boot every morning. So thats about 105 restarts or boots with a 100% Griffin Powermate start up. I Believe the problem is solved!

I hope this helps those that use the Griffin Powermate and to those that want to use one. You can find them on ebay for about $20 (US) used or $32 (US) new plus shipping. Lets keep this secret between us jukeboxers so the Powermates dont dissappear from ebay so cheaply.

Great detective work.  Now that you have debugged the driver I am sure they will be a much more popular item for juke construction.

I just ripped my powermate out of my last juke and replaced it with a pot, just because I got so frustrated with it.
I may try it on my next project and try your method.

Bringing up this old topic.

This worked FANTASTIC!!! I had given up on my powermate, and went to a pot. I opened up the back of my cabinet and wound up breaking the pot somehow. So a search and this thread came up.
Followed everything and now the powermate works flawlessly.

Thanks for the great advice.

Hopefully someone else in need sees this.  :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Just saw this and used it to fix my Griffin.  I had to go about it a little differently because the Powermate wouldn't show up in the Device Manager without it being plugged in, but I used "update driver" and followed you instructions from there.  Works perfectly.  Thanks again!

Guys,
Wonder if someone can please  help me out here.
I have tried to install this thing as per the forum directions bit I am damned if I can find the powrmate.inf file.
My powermate came with no CD so I had to download from Griffins site and I dont think it came with that particular file that I need.
If anyone could copy it and email it to me or attach it to a reply or come up with an answer or whatever I would be eternally grateful.
Thanks All,
Scott the Frustrated !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Assuming your using XP, your .inf files are hidden. You have to make the file be shown in the folder.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

1.Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2.Double-click on the My Computer icon.
3.Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4.After the new window appears select the View tab.
5.Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
6.Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
7.Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
8.Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
9.Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
10.Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Do the above, then follow the tutorial.

Thanks Fordman for the tutorial, works great!  ;D

I did it slightly different though, instead of uninstalling the driver I chose:

update the driver

no not at this time

install from a list or specific location (Advanced)

Don't search. I will choose the driver to install.

Have disk.

Browse

PowerMate.inf

Of course if you swap which USB port you have it plugged it into you have to do the whole process again.

Great work Fordman.
But when I unplugged the PM, the driver in device manager disappeared.
So I used RetroBorg's method and it seems to be working now.
