Waremonger, It just finished downloading the July 1983 issue. Great scan. Brings back lots of memories. ...especially the ads for all the joysticks being sold and the cheesy fake screenshots. I never really understood that as many of the hand drawn screenshots looked worse than the actual games. Maybe it was a printing composition issue? |

I had always wondered when I was reading these as a kid why they used faked screenshots because, as you mentioned, the drawn "screenshots" usually look way worse. My guess is that maybe they had difficulty getting clear pictures of a TV screen without blur? |

If you look at page 55 and 68 of your July 1983 issue, you'll see photos some home port of Missile Command and Gridrunner respectively. They look great and pretty accurate to what you'd see on a tv or composite monitor. ...or maybe simply the magazine didn't have the time or resources to get photos on their own and relied on whatever the vendors gave them. But then it still doesn't answer why they're used in the first place. |

I don't know how I just found this thread, but I did. LOL I just went into storage (20 steps away) and pulled out my issues of Electronic Games. Looks like I've got all of 1983 (Jan-Dec) as well as Jan & Mar 1984. Unfortunately, I do not have a scanner... I also found the following mags: 'Video Games': Dec 82, Feb 83, Mar 83, Apr 83, May 83 'Creative Computing Video & Arcade Games' Vol. 1 No. 2 Fall 1983 'Electronic Fun with Computers And Games' July 1983 Vol. 1 No. 9 Fun stuff! Oh...I remember how I stumbled in here..I'm trying to figure out where to get 'snaps' to add photos to MAME. Any ideas? |
