how many buttons do i need?

massive88:

Two buttons opens you up to the entire NES library as well.

Just a thought.

If you already have a cab though, I agree theres some nice simplicity about just being able to use only one button and as you say, if you want to play more, you have the full cab.

The some games, like Donkey Kong for example, you may want to run an ooooolder version of mame to get back to where it was using samples.  When they started emulating the sound, the requirements for some of the simple looking games went really high.

leapinlew:

You will not need more than 25 buttons per player.

Use a grain of salt here, some of  those classics (lady bug, mr do) are here due to MAME xml errors describing the number of buttons.
There are some interesting games, but probably not enough to really seal it that you need a 2nd button.
I played a lot of space panic back in the day.  :)

looking at that list, i'm not going to miss any of those games.

as for the 2500+ not being able to handle donkey kong..that kinda sucks.  i never really played it much on my cabinet before the upgrade.  it seems to run OK on my P4 3.0ghz with 2gb of ram.

i'm not really interested in emulating NES games...alot of them would require an 8way stick anyway...i do all of my console emulation on my modded xbox, not my cabinet.

i'm not going to be able to use my gamepad hack, since it just won't have enough inputs...so it looks like i'll use the x-arcade interface, and just have alot of unused inputs.  i figured at the very least i'll need 4 inputs for the joystick, 1 action button, two start buttons, at least 1 coin button, plus, preferably pause and exit.  i'm sure there are more games i could play if i had 2 action buttons instead of 1..but i'm not too conerned, as long as i can play the good classics that i remember.

i may end up looking for an older version of mame and older roms, but since i already have mame 124 with a full set, i'd like to just use that.

In that case go for one button and never look back!
