Sorry to bump an old topic.  I came across this thread by accident while searching for something else.

Anyway, I just wanted to warn you about the joystick layout, Infernarl.  I hope you're not too far along just yet.

Based on your layout I can see that player 3 and 4 are oriented at about 45 degrees.  From experience, I highly recommend that, even though your buttons are at an angle, you do not angle the joysticks.  Orient them inline with the screen.  I found that it's far more natural in practice.

Also notice on the Gauntlet II control panel in your picture that all joysticks are lined up with the monitor (look at the joystick bolts).
