2600's Punch-Out Restoration
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:09:21 pm »
Ok, time to start this project.

I got this empty cabinet in the spring and I finally got a chance to do a little cleaning.

Here are a few before shots of the inside after I vacuumed it out.

After I took advice from Wade and took off the front and hosed it down then used some Blech White.  I sprayed some Polycrylic on it afterward to help with future cleanups.

Is the machine going to become a Punch-Out, Super Punch-Out or both?

Well technically both since I'm finishing up the Double Punch-Out kit and will put the kit in here. I guess I should of changed the title a bit.  I have a marquee for both, side art will probably have the super stickers, but no ducking pull on the control panel.  Maybe I'll regret not having the ducking pull sticker later.

I'll also swap in my Arm Wrestling and Playchoice Board in for good measure.

I've got one of the repro Ducking Pull stickers we did that I would consider a "factory second", due to the alignment of the carriage bolt holes being off enough to be a problem. The holes could be fixed with an exacto knife, and the carriage bolt heads would more than cover the amount that the holes are off by, so with the joystick installed, you couldn't tell the difference.

Considering the amount of help you provided in fixing the frustrating audio problem with my SPO boardset, I'll send you the sticker at no charge if you want it.

Another Punch-Out!!   :applaud:

Are you going to be selling these kits?  Now that Mikes Arcade is working on the SPO joystick, I'd love to be able to play both in my cab.
My current collection:  Arkanoid^3, Asteroids Deluxe, Centipede, Donkey Kong w/DIIK, Frenzy w/Berzerk multi, Galaga, Galaxian, Gyruss, Mappy,  Missile Command, Multi-Williams, O'Boyles Arcade (Mame), Pac-man,  Sinistar, Star Wars, Tempest, War Gods

I will.  I talked about it a little on KLOV.  I don't think it will be that popular though, because it's a little pricey.

I'm guesstimating $175.   I don't want to go higher then that, but trying to go lower.  I may offer kits of parts at a cheaper price.  I'm also looking at other ways or offering options that would make it cheaper.

On the Cab or the kit?

My restore process is going to be a little bit slower then yours.  I just got back from paternity leave and had a big project to get out the door at work.  Luckily that part is done now.  Hope to start to put a few things back in the cab this weekend.

For the kit, I'm finishing up the VHDL right now and then I'll finish laying out the rest of the PCB's.

What will be involved with the kit?  Will it be solder-less?  Also, if people w/ PO's get this, how will we make the ducking in SPO work?

The kit will be solder-less.  It will mainly involve taking out EPROMs and putting a board down in it's place.

As for the duck, Mike's arcade should be offering a SPO repro joystick soon.  Or you can mount another button for duck.

Yeah, the key to success for this kit is for Mike to offer this joystick.  Last I heard he was planning on doing it, but I haven't heard a time frame for it.  I'd be in for a kit, but only if I could get the joystick.  I don't want to add a button on the control panel.

I'm not sure if the kit will be that successful which is fine by me.  I'm mainly doing it for me anyways.  If I do sell any, I imagine it will only be a handful.

Thanks guys.  I'll make sure to let you know when it's done.

Now to get back to my cabinet restoration.  I think I'm going to try to clean some parts up and put them back in the cab.  Then I want to tackle the prep and paint on the inner edges so I can put the cab back together.  Might try rolling that part, the top and the back door.  Speaking of I got a back door cut at lowes.  Also, I want to rebuild the base.

Yeah, it's going to make for an expensive upgrade to add the SPO kit.  I was expecting a lower price point as well on the joystick, but I guess when you are the only option you can set your price.

Not just that it's the only option, but the only option on a low volume product. It's gotta be hard to make decent money on a reproduction joystick that applies to a single game.
My Collection: Mame cab, 38 dedicated vids, pin, skeeball, coin op air hockey table, Ice Cold Beer, Megatouch, 2 token machines, and payphone (VAPS, pics at Arcade Crusade)

Add Ambience to your mame cab setup

True that.  Plus the Reproduction Nintendo 4-way is $54, so you have to figure the Super Punch-Out one is going to be a bit more expensive then that.

Two games technically (Arm Wrestling and SPO), but AW is even less common than SPO, and uses a 2-way restrictor rather than a 4-way. This is the reason I thought we'd never see a reproduction SPO joystick.

I got one from Mike in the mail yesterday. I haven't had a chance to try it out in the SPO machine yet but everything seems to be in order. No complaints with the quality. It feels just like an original Nintendo joystick.

I think Mike is planning to offer it as a conversion kit; so if you already have a Nintendo joystick kicking around, that would be a cheaper option.

Yeah, I made a comment on that somewhere.  I have a SPO stick, but went ahead and picked that up a few months ago.

I need to get back to this project.
