2 SFIV wireless xbox360 sticks in 6 days, *Finished*
« on: March 14, 2009, 06:23:16 pm »
Ok,

here's the motivation
a bunch of us guys are going up to Funspot next weekend and I wanna have a killer Sreetfighter round robin in the hotel were stain' at
I got the 360 and I got a projector so all I need are some killer sticks

I've been watching Gatsu, Kaytrim, and Dmworking's cases
so I've stolen a bit from everyone (hope you all don't mind)
plus some great advice from cappadonna

I've got limited time as were leaving a week from today
so although I've hacked the wireless 360 controllers before I've recruted HarumaN to do two for me,
so all I have to do is construct the boxes, come up with some art, which I'm hoping Gatsu will help me out with.
Do some quick crimping and I should be ready to go (yeah right! ::) I wish it was that easy)

this is the design, I did today
I wanted them to work on a table as well as on your lap, hence the rounded edges on the bottom

let me know what you all think

I'm going to start cutting in the morning

Good lookin' design man.  One piece of advice.......I know your on a time schedual but TAKE YOUR TIME.  I have hurried thru projects and really made a mess of them before.  I think you would rather you impress your friends with a kick arse stick a week late than a pizza hut pizza box with buttons jammed into it.  (Anyone seen those pics  :laugh2:)  Anyway, just my 2 cents.  If you need any info or help let us know and best of luck

Gatsu,

Thanks so much for sharing!

Apparently I didn't look hard enough, you had already posted what I was looking for in the artwork forum

Damn that is one fine looking CP overlay!
It looks even better at full res :o

any input on the stick layout?
I really respect you design aesthetic and building experience, on these
I see you are using a 7 button layout are you using that with the console version too?

this thing is roughly 15" x 10" x 3" at the widest points
what is the rough foot print of yours? (I know you have a few designs, but roughly)

hope you don't mind me picking your brain, but I got a steep learning curve and a short period of time :banghead:

Nice designs.  Do you plan on using something like this http://tinyurl.com/czlzjq so you can use a play and charge kit and not have to open the stick up to recharge each time?  If so I'm interested to see how you implement it into the stick.  I've been looking for one similar to the one in the link that was round and easier to put in a button slot.

I have one in a stick kaytrim built for me. I  noticed you can take it out of the metal housing and give it a round shape.  I wonder what the size it is without the metal housing

I was just planning a hinged panel on the bottom to get to the battery

I have a couple extra batteries, I hate the cords, so I refuse to charge n' play anyway
I have a charger that always has 2 extra batteries in it ready to go

got the rough cuts done on all the pieces and the finished the top on one, so all I have to do is copy it with the good old pattern bit
still have to round some of the edges on a few of the other pieces.

I dry fit one together to see what it looked like
not to bad for one day

Hey Gatsu,

not to be a pain, but I'd really like to know if you've used that 7 button layout with the console SFIV and if you like it.
Be good to know before I start drilling

Thanks,

Bender

I like it. Though its better suited for a mame arcade machine....to switch between capcom and neo-geo games.

I'd stick with either the 6 face buttons....or go all the way with 8. So you can have 1 set to all 3 punches, the other for all 3 kicks.

They look great so far Bender.

Ive started work on mine over the last couple of days and mine look near identical to yours but mine have rounded corners, lol.

What angle did you go for for your CP slant? I was going to go for 10 degrees but it looked to steep and would have made the back panel too tall for me so I went for 5 degress in the end.

I went with 10, I like a good angle
which corners are you rounding? just saw the thread update, the photo of those side pieces could have come from my shop last night, screws to hold the template are even in the same position, you weren't kidding they're pretty close (great minds and all ;D)
I designed mine to laminate, cause I don't have time to paint, so that severely limits the curves I could do, If I were to paint the design would be pretty different I think

I never want to be building the same thing you are, it's way too depressing
mine will look like garbage in comparison :(
I know yours are going to be amazing!
can't wait to see

these are just quickies, but I think they'll be fun to play

finally picked up the game today, man does it look great!
8 buttons is definitely the way to go for this

1 day to design, 3 day to build

everything went really well the last couple of days so I finished um up, except for the wiring  (I should get the controller hacks on thurs)
so here is the rest of the build for the first one

Base pieces laminated

top CP Laminated

Bottom of CP laminated

close up of inserts for joystick mount

I didn't have time to make custom art, so I adapted the fantastic artwork from one of Gatsu's CPOs that I loved (thanks so much for sharing Gatsu!)

The First one done

on the back I have the Start, Back, Xbox Guide, and Sync buttons (the Sync is recessed so as not to hit it accidentally)

the bottom panel is held firmly shut with 2 pairs of magnets I epoxied in
the inside waiting for some wires

AWWW, look they're so cute together, too bad they'll be used to destroy one another! >:D

I was amazed how quick this went, making 2 was really only like 10-15% more work

Man that is coming along pretty fast & nice.  Looks nice and pro.

do you have good wood working tools?  Cutting the boards would by far be the hardest part for me doing it by hand with no real work area/table.

Awesome job Bender!  How did you apply the art?  Is there clear plexi on top?  It looks like you laminated and then covered with the artwork.  The hardest part for me would definitely be the controller hack since I've never done something like that before.  I assume you are just ditching the analog stick and wiring up the d-pad to the 8-way?  Everything looks great.

I have JLW's in there now

I happened to have 2 of them on hand from my work on modding U360's
I would have gone with JLF's but as you know can't get em right now

Thanks for the complement on the art but really 99% of it was your hard work

yes, the analog is ditched for this type of stick (someday I want to remedy that)

the art is printed on sticky-backed vinyl and then covered with clear polycarbonate (like Mame Marquees does for CPO's)

Looks great Bender, very pro!

Where abouts is your hacked pad going?

Do you need Home, Start, Back and Sync buttons?

I was only planning on Home and Start. I dont think I generally use back. What is the Sync button for? I imagine if you need to resync your controller(s)? I dont think I have ever touched my sync button whilst playing on my 360.

Im not saying you should/shouldn't use whatever, I'm just curious.

Thanks Franco,

the pad is getting squeezed below the buttons, it's a REALLY tight fit. I'll post some pics when I'm done wiring

I do need the sync button cause I'm planning on using them at friends houses and with the Benderama
as for the back button it's used as menu button on some games and I'm just paranoid if I don't have it I'll need it

The back button is useful in the SFIV trial modes, I'd spend the effort to add them.

ok, The second one is all wired up

ALL DONE!

a special thanks to HarumaN who rushed out two conroller hacks for me, Thanks Buddy and Fantastic Work! couldn't have pulled it off in time without those.

Played a little, and man it's fun

here's a pic of the wiring, not that pretty, I'll probably redo it down the road, but it works
oh yeah, I had to route out the a space in the bottom so the battery pack would fit
