$49 push pull spinner for MAME? SpaceNavigator PE
« on: March 11, 2009, 02:12:49 am »
3D Connexion:  SpaceNavigator PE - $48.95

I ran across this nifty device online by sheer accident, and it got me thinking.  Can this substitute as a spinner on a control panel?  Perhaps a push pull spinner?  Maybe and analog stick too?  Hmmm.

What do you guys think?  Do you think it can work in MAME based stuff?  Perhaps it can be used for a no trackball solution such as Centipede?

Here's the product on sale at Amazon.com:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000LB41BM/ref=nosim/i4ufututechne-20?SubscriptionId=09FVDRT8TEJ64C2A7Y02

Check out the "Related Media" link below the description to play a video of it in action.  Wow, it may actually work!

Thoughts?

I thought of it a year or so ago. Most I found weren't priced low enough, and I missed an auction or two that were.

It is used for CAD applicatiion, it does not spin at all, you can twist it  but it does not spin.

Meh, I bought one anyway.  I want to tinker with it.  I got it for $45 shipped brand new.  Not too shabby.  Also, I want to see if it will work with my video editing.  It may come in handy with Aftereffects.  Win, win situation.

I'm really curious to see how it works with Centipede and Arkanoid.  It may not spin all the way around, but it may have a nice feel for "paddle" type games.

I keep you posted once I receive it.

You'll have to hack mame a little to get it to work.  It's not a "Gaming Device" (aka joystick) or a "Pointer Device" (aka mouse), so mame doesn't look for it or find it.  IIRC, it's a simple couple lines; I'll have to look it up.  (I thought I posted about this before; edit: yes I did.)

Very nice device for CAD and google earth out of the box, though.
