The hard drive in the Xbox is the stock 8GB drive. Thumb\Pen drives are possible with a simple homemade adapter or you can buy them for cheap, the Xbox uses USB with an extra 3.3v wire for a pulse signal that ties to the horizontal sync, it's irrelevant here as that signal is only there for things light light guns etc http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xbox_Linux_USB_HOWTO Not sure if external hard drives will work, that would depend on how the enclosure communicates with the bus most likely. As for playing DVDs being erratic, I've never experienced this on ANY Xbox drive (I have every drive type there ever was made, including a stockpile of 15 spare Samsung drives). The only time this would happen, is with poor media copied DVDs. |

I've done 5-6 of them and they all had issues with anything but OEM games. Commercial DVDs have been only marginally better than DVDRs. It's also very very common to see on the xbox-scene forums. Those drives become finicky pretty fast. |

Well thanks for crapping my thread up with misinformation from the minority, but you're wrong. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?s=d26e82d9fdab26af9da804dd7e5da822&showtopic=89346 --- Quote ---# Most Xboxes will not read CD-R discs, but some will. # Most Xboxes will read DVD-R, DVD-Rw, CD-RW, DVD,R and DVD+Rw, but some won't read DVD+R/RW. --- End quote --- Certain drives don't like certain blank media, primarily CD-R. Maybe you're confusing the PS2 with the Xbox, but there are no problems reading blanks let alone pressed DVD movies, unless you have a drive with a dying laser.......which has nothing to do with the system itself in general. There's more references I can point to than that, all you are doing is crapping my thread up with misinformation posted by the minority in "Help me! I are n00b!" threads that you come across everywhere. You may have done 5 or 6 systems, I can counter that with component level repairs, over 50 systems modded and probably well over 100 DVDROM repairs/rebuilds. Crap elsewhere please. And for anyone looking at the Xbox, it reads CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R just fine. This is a straggler I haven't bothered to sell, I have 3 others in the house I'm keeping. |

Sorry, bro, that's my experience. 100%. And everyone I've ever talked to says similar things... don't bother with the Xbox as a dvd player. As a media streamer it is fantastic. Top of the line. It's just not a good DVD player. And there are a lot of XBMC users around here so you're not really going after folks who don't know about modded Xboxes on this forum. :dunno |
