best setting in mame for a lcd monitor
« on: March 05, 2009, 07:49:52 am »
Hi
I just wandering if is there a good consensus in setting in Mame (and other emulator, project 64, znes, fusion, nestopia) for 19 LCD monitor. Is there something I should know about this setting that going to give me a better image.

Thanks Gino

Run MAME at your panel's native resolution if possible and try some of the effects to make it look more authentic.

I've had good luck with SailorSat's triad3 and triad6 effects. Here's the link:

First, download the triad effects in the link above and place in your artwork folder in the MAME directory. Then just follow SailorSat's directions below:

Step1 - Upscale the resolution by 3 (vertical) or 4 (horizontal) with a bilinear filter ("prescale 4" in mame.ini, "filter 1" in mame.ini)
Step2 - Apply the RGB Triad; triad3 for vertical, triad6 for horizontal. ("effect triad6" in mame.ini)
Step3 - Set the output resolution the native screen resolution of my CRT Tube ("resolution0 1600x1200x32@60" in mame.ini)

The prescale and effect options are under # WINDOWS VIDEO OPTIONS in mame.ini. The resolution option is under # PER-WINDOW VIDEO OPTIONS in the ini. The filter option is under # DIRECT3D-SPECIFIC OPTIONS in the ini. You should be all set.

How powerful of a computer do you have? Using effects causes a performance hit so you'll need some horsepower.

If you use OpenGL effects you don't loose horsepower as all the overlay stuff is handled by the GFX card. Mame renders each frame into an OpenGL buffer on the vidcard, and after that OpenGL starts scaling and rendering the overlays. Your processor won't drop a single frame because of that. On a mac you can even throw in a bunch of Quartz effects, and only the heaviest stuff (full Roy Lichtenstein rendering) starts irritating my modest 7600GS card.

Don't blame me if the Windows version does not have this nice OpenGL scaling. I don't know about that.

Are you running the most recent version of MAME or an older version? Are all games running slow with effects added or just certain games? What resolution are you running?

Hmmm. You might not have enough horsepower. Plus 512MB of ram is a little low IMO, especially running on-board video. Looks like you may have to forgo effects until you do a little computer updating.

Right now I'm using an Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of Ram and they run fine.

Post your MAME ini and let me take a look. I want to make sure there's nothing else that could be causing this.
