Necroticart:
metal is progressive with each generation it pushes us more towards edge of darkness.

it means that with each generation metal is pushed forward by new sounds and darker content.  metal music in general pushes the envelope on every instrument that it can be played on.

FrizzleFried:
Arise was my first Sepultura album.  It's my favorite.

I saw Sepultura / Ozzy / Black Sabbath back in 1992 I think it was.  Sepultura was really out of place...but I completely dug on them.

Yeah, I saw that tour, too, in San Diego. I stayed for the whole thing, but I didn't really care about the rest of the show after Sepultura. Especially with popcul music, I really prefer recorded. Live is messy and in metal they always play it really fast, and....blech.

Dream Theater would be the most obvious example I could think of.

I can tell people in this thread will say "They're not metal", but there seems to be a trend here of only calling what you like metal. Dream Theater played Master Of Puppets start to finish on stage, doing a better job of it than Metallica, so they definitely have metal chops.

DT certainly has chops. They easily can play metal, it's just that they're inherently more of a rock band. And, yes, they've played around with meter (vs time), but it's mostly monophonic in approach, and even harmonically they haven't really gone very far.

Not really. Just seems to for those who aren't familiar with much older music.

And, today's offering, good old-school thrash-punk:
