Driving Games controls converted to joystick on MAME...

I figured somebody out there has done this....the driving games such as Spy Hunter, Cruisin USA, etc....

Has anyone mapped the controls to where a player can do the same with a joystick?....like for example.....

( bear with me here, Im away from my cab)....Spy Hunter, the first time I played it...When I push up ....the car gasses up and if I turn left or right  the gas stops and in the end...it makes it hard to play....

Is there a way where I can have my direction movements....make one button just for gas...one for brake , and other for weapons... using a tankstick....

Looking over this post....I'm confusing myself reading this.... :dizzy:

I have a Dual analog, retractable cable pad. I set accel usually to UP on the right stick, brake to one of the shoulder buttons(theres four) steering goes to the left stick , and weapons to whatever config i find compfy. That's how I play road riots revenge. spy hunter I don't really play so no clue if i just helped or not.

Do you have an analog joystick with small diagonals, or a 4-way?  (The symptoms seem that way.)

Besides I don't recommend using digital (8-way or 4-way) joysticks to control analog inputs like a steering wheel, It's pretty easy to remap mame's inputs.  Check out mame's FAQ (How do I configure the keys? and How can I change what axes the mouse and joystick control?) for a quick review.

If you stick is analog, make sure it is mapped to paddle analog input, and NOT paddle dec nor paddle inc.  If your stick is digital, have it mapped to paddle dec & paddle inc and not to paddle analog.

Map whichever button you want to mame's pedal input.  Make sure the button is not also (still) mapped to one of spy hunter's weapons.

Tankstick sticks are digital.
