Game Competition #13: Ghouls and Ghosts

The game for round 13 is Ghouls'n Ghosts. Chosen by last round winner, isucamper.



Rules:

- You can use any rom, default settings, no cheats.

- This is a Single Credit game ONLY! Inserting more then 1 credit will risk your score being immediately disqualified.

- Use any mame version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Tuesday, March 4th (11:59:59pm Eastern Standard Time).
 
- High score wins (a tie means there's more than one winner).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

- MAME recordings are optional, but encouraged!

I've got my eye on a prize for this contest, but I don't actually have it in my possession.  If I can get it, I should have it in a few days and I'll update this post.  Nothing too spectacular but kinda cool I guess, and it is related to GnG.  Good luck y'all.  I'll be participating as I really haven't played this game more than a few times (though I did play the crud out of the sequel on the SNES).

Well, this doesn't seem like a great game for a competition.  Way too hard.  More enjoyable going for distance with a lot of credits rather than going for score on a single credit.  Oh well.

though I would give this round a try and only scored around 9000. Not sure if I can do better. It is a very frustrating game.   :banghead:

Man, and I thought this game was hard enough without trying to point press. I've only managed about 19,000. I might try more, but dammit this game pisses me off.

Edit 1: I just got 22,900, but that's still not good enough. It is better, though...

Edit 2: 23,400 -- If I ever get one that's higher than the current high score, I'll post a screenshot.

I'm rather new to the forums, how do these competitions work?  Just try to get the highest score you can?  How do you show proof?

just hit F12 once your done with your score / on the highscore table.. and it should create a snap shot in your MAME folder. folder should be called snaps most likely.

super ghouls and ghost was the bane of my childhood life.  For awhile it was the only game I had and it was so hard and so frustrating.  I finally got to the boss one day only to find there was no way to kill him.  I guess i needed a secret weapon.

I found a video just yesterday of some master playing the game and he had the weapon and killed the boss.  He makes the game look so easy...

This game is all about mastering the jump, timing, and learning the locations of all the chests.

I gave it a few tries and did bad with my new arcade controls, for the heck of it I tried a controller and got to the 1st stage boss first try but died against him, score was like 11,000 ish I think.

I think I will save my sanity and wait for the next competition :P

I'd love to see a vertical shooter contest, like dodonpachi :P id not win but atleast its really fun to play.

No f'n way.  I guess I'll wait for the next competition, this game is way too aggravating and cheap.  Now I remember why I went through 3 copies of the game on Genesis.  Cheatin' 3 skull throwin' fireball SOBs!  And my 360 controller sucks for this game too.

HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH. ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, the forum I played this on recently, one guy finished the game. He does that with these, though. The only people who can beat him on these (and newer vertical/horizontal shooters) are the east euro folk. They are freaks of nature.

Personally, I love the graphics in the game. The game play is fine - but like any game of this nature is much more than I'm interested in learning. Forgot to play it the other night.

Personally, I love the graphics in the game.

I've always found this game to be one of the best looking. The graphics are still awesome to this day.

The game is great looking, sounding, and playing.

 Its one of the few games that allows you all the continues in the world.. yet
is still a real challenge to finish.   

 Its also a game that has great replay value. 

 I replayed it last night.  Got to the 2nd level... but Im too rusty at that stage to
beat it with the available men Ive had.

 Great fun though  :)


 * Edit *

 Just thought I would add that there is a version for the Sega Master System
that is excellent.   It adds the ability to select different types of power up add-ons
such as boots which speed you up and or can jump higher.  Armour that
takes more hits..etc.  Its actually really great, despite the systems limitations.

I did that  on my last guy as well.  I got by the first red demon though, and leeched the lava bats.

I point press in the first stage before the bridge, but that's the only place I can manage. I hate going up the mountain, so I have trouble pressing there, and the start of the second stage ---smurfs--- me up pretty royally with those bouncing rock turtles, so I just haul ass through there. I die at the lava bats because I'm always running from the red demon. (I can't hit that ---smurf---!)

Edit: Though now I'm a little more comfortable with most of those areas. I still suck at this game, though. The hardest part is not knowing what to do when you reach a new area.

Made it to the third stage finally.

I would've had a higher score, but my TAB menu somehow popped up outta nowhere and I got killed. I don't have any shifts set that would've caused it and the button is WAY far out of reach. I don't understand how it happened and this is a first. I was having my best run yet, so it kinda figures it would happen then.

I hear ya. I looked yesterday and was shocked by the lack of them on eBay. I did find a Ghosts 'n Goblins cabinet for $200 in beautiful shape close to where I live, but I'm not a huge fan of that insanely difficult game (though for the price, it's still worth considering).

Got me a nice 40,200....

...and then I realized that the menu had slipped 1 notch before I selected Ghouls 'n' Ghosts in MaLa, so it turns out I was actually playing Ghosts 'n' Goblins...

...doy...

Couldn't get beyond 14k in Ghouls 'n' Ghosts.  That sword weapon is a joke.   If you get the upwards-chucking battleaxe, you're in good shape for killing those buzzards, things on the hill, & the first boss (trivial!).

I give up.

To those who may not know... 

 If you open enough chests, and you retain your original armour, you get
Magical Armour.   The magic is different depending on what weapon you
have.  Hold down the fire button to charge the magic. Release it at full power to
use the magic effect.

 Also, on the first level.. go to the left and start hopping.  A chest will pop up
there, giving you a little head start to the next chests on that level.  You can only
find/activate the chest by jumping in the correct places.

Yep, I was aware of it. I never find a use for the power-up attacks, though. Don't know why. I tend to stick with the original weapon, unless the dagger or the shield looking thing turn up. I don't care for the axe, firebomb, or sword.

If you wanna see that whole deal, run over to Pete's-Emulation.com and look up the comp there of a few/several months ago, and grab Bapsilon's INP. He had the special armour an all, and I think he finished the game. I like the spinning mirror discs or whatever. Those are pretty cool.

I used to play this occasionally in the arcades, but never persisted long enough to become an expert.

I just managed to get 42,400 after a couple of days playing it occasionally.  Yes, a very hard game! Once you know its secrets I'm sure it would get much easier.

I tried to record one last score, this time with an INP, before this was over, but I couldn't go higher than my current score. I was on track to having my best game yet, when just as I get into the area of the lava bats (without dying), I accidentally picked up the axe! You can't kill the eyeball plant things with it! (Not easily) I lost all four lives at that very spot. On my last life, I picked up the default weapon, and got hit by an eyeball right when I grabbed it. ARGH!

So I actually won this thing? Wow...my score was pretty lousy, and I have no clue what game to pick for the next round (or what prize to offer the winner, though I'm sure I'll come up with something).

pick a non joystick game .. was arkanoid ever picked ?? perhaps a trakball game ?? centipede ever picked ? Congrats on the contest ! Let us know what the mystery prize is / was. I ended up tossing in an extra Gun.Smoke (more traditional marquee to the last Prize give away) Keep the prize trend goin'!
