Help with EPROM Reader, EZ-EP
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:37:57 pm »
I recently bought an EPROM reader - an EZ-EP from M2L Electronics.  The company is now defunct, don't bother trying to find them.  I'm hoping to repair some arcade boards with it, and who knows, maybe I'll find an updumped gem somewhere.

It's an old parallel port reader, and the program only works in DOS.  I have an old Celeron that boots to Win98 DOS.  As far as I can tell it's working properly, but I may or may not have a config issue.  Since I have no manual I'm going on best guesses here.

I have tried the parallel port set to normal, ECP and EPP.  The results are all the same.

It won't auto identify the EPROM I put in.  Started with a 2716 from a Pac-Man board.  I figured the easiest thing would be to verify any dumps with a known ROM I had on hand.  I chose 5E.

It dumps - it definitely dumps - but it seems to only dump 1/2 the ROM.  I used a file comparing program to see the differences.  It's chopped the back 1/2 of it off.  Oh, there is a tiny difference about 1/2 way thru the part that does dump, but is otherwise identical.  It could be a different file I suppose, but I don't have any way to tell.

So...any experience with this reader?  Any tips?

Okay, I think I got it wrong.  I have merged ROM sets, and was checking the file "pacman.5e" which is 4096 bytes.  When compared against "5e.cpu" the files are identical.

I've been wanting to buy a EPROM reader for the longest time to fix some bad games. I have seen their prices range all over the place, just wondering how much that reader set you back and if it does everything you need it to do?

This particular one was $20 bucks shipped, but that was a special situation.

I'd have to go back to the data sheets but I don't think you can auto-ID an EPROM that old.
Call me a cheap bastard... I learned to fix things to save money... even surface mount soldering...

Is this the "EP1" sold by JDR Microdevices under the MCT brand? If so, JDR still has some manuals and dos files on their tech support site.

Also, http://www.danbbs.dk/~rmadrm/eprom.htm had some information also.

I have the MOD-EMEP8 (8 chips can be made at once) that I got from my old boss when he went out of business. However, this is useless to me because he lost the Host Adaptor Card (MOD-EMAC, or SAC-101A) that goes in an ISA slot in a computer. JDR says they no longer have those cards.

Funny you should say that.  I have a MCT MOD-MUP programmer/tester, but I also don't have the interface board.  I'm not sure what use this is to anybody to know, but if you find a guy who's got a couple of those interface boards, let me know.  I might be interested in one.

My old boss was coping/modifying chips like crazy with that old unit. After he went out of business, he gave me all his eprom burning stuff. Unfortunately, the interface ("host adapter") card was left in the old computer and he thinks the computer got sent to landfill. If I had that card and an old desktop computer, I could copy/burn eproms. He left me with the latest English Mark Dart 6000 series game software chip, Rowe CD100 software, and Medalist "Spectrum" latest software chips I could copy along with a few blank eproms.

JDR has some software at the ftp site:

ftp://ftp.jdr.com/programmers/

Read the programmers text file to see what all software and models are there.

Thanks Ken.  I knew about everything except the Yahoo! group.  I do have to wonder why they've elected to keep the info within hidden though...you have to be a member to see it.  What happens if the group owner drops off the face of the earth?  Anything inside is gone forever.

Of course, with only two members, I'm curious what's inside at all.

It might be worth it to join the group. Maybe the two people did it that way to keep out spammers?

ftp://ftp.jdr.com/programmers/

Read the programmers text file to see what all software and models are there.

Given the picture of that card, it looks like all it does is decode the ISA address, handle insertion of wait states (IOCHRDY) and pass the data lines and maybe some lower part of the address through to the DB-25 cable (hopefully after buffering it).  If you can figure out the pinout for that cable, it shouldn't be hard to re-create the card.  I'll look at my MOD-MUP and see if it's similar.

It passes power and programming voltages through from the interface card inside the computer to the actual programmer module.

Too bad somebody doesn't make some sort of USB adapter to plug into a modern laptop (with Windows support instead of the original devices DOS) so I could use this programmer.

All you need is to go onto ebay and look for the willem eeprom burner.
they cost like $15 plus $15 shipping so for $30 or so its a good burner.
further more
a pacman uses only 2532 not 2716 or 2732 .
but if youre eeprom burner you have now can change type like you can pick 2532 then change to 2732 w out turning it off then you can read a 2732 from the new willem paralell mode using its .79 software in the pcb3 mode then burn a 2732 then using youre old one read 2732 then dont switch old burner off switch type to 2532 then burn onto a blank 2532. then you can burn youre own pacman roms i did it...
it actually worked.
the only problem is a 2532 has a10 in a differnt pin than a 2732 does..
you can use two sockets to make a converter socket to make burner think a 2532 is a 2732 and it might work but its easyer to just use a new $15 willem burner to burn a 2732 then use a olde burner to switch to read 2732 then burn switch brands to 2532 then push program..
it seemed to work.
I made my own atari cart roms for a board i got w snoopy bootleged onto a chip w window on it for 2600 and it copied then i got new willem eeprom burner w software usb dont even plug in just plug to printer port w cable it comes w then run .97 software in pcb3 mode then move usb jumper to power pack setting then set to 2732 jumpers then you dont need usb connector for powering willem eeprom burner.
once you get willem eeprom burner Its easy to use once you figure out power needs to be a external power pack not a usb cable no software goes threw usb connection only 5v power to power the burner what a lame design just switch to power pack jumper setting and use a 24v ac or 12v dc or 15v dc power pack and unless youre burning one time fuze chips you dont need more than 12v now a 9316 bally general instrments chip from games like space invaders need 12v 5v and -5v good luck I did however use a 486 power supplu and read a space invaders 9316 chip
I also copied a tms2716 to a normal 2716.
just moved a10 pin pins 18-21 are differnt for differnt chips and chip enable the problem is uness you have pdf file on every chip youre going to burn you will have problems knowing Where TF pin a10 (address line) goes its
can be tied to chip enable +5v or chip select same damn thing.
anyway if you need pacman roms i could if you have blank 2532 roms for me to erease I would or could burn you some if you need to get a original midway pacman pcb running i already got Miss packman plus (c) 1982/1983
Midway working and pacman and mspacman on same board NOT AT THE SAME TIME.
I also had downloaded a mod to make 4 game mod but gave up on butcharing pacman pcb then stole the fastpac6f.6f chip or one of the fast ones chip roms from internet and loaded burned it into one of the rom chip i forget i think its 6f i loaded the 4 game hack mod and unzipped then took just the fast.6f chip and burned a 2716 on willem $15 ebay burner then took 2732 and put into old digelec eeprom burner  pushed read then form  changed its mode to a 2532 mode then pushed program(burn chip) button and viola i changed a 2732 into a 2532 and put it into original REAL pacman board and it BOOTED!!!! ..

here is a pdf of a 2532 used in pacman midway pcb
.
it can be a non hitachi chip and still be a 2532! only tms chips were different.
anyway a 2732 can be used but look at the differnt a10 lines and where chip enable or select needs +5v and where a10 gets connected on pacman pcb as a 2532 so a 2732 needs to have a10 in different pin thats where two extra sockets help!.

A number of people have reported problems with the Willem burners, although much of that seems to be tied to voltage levels, so if you get an externally powered unit you are fine. Perhaps coincidentally, I noticed that nobody that I know with a burner lists a Willem amongst their gear.

I've heard of people that have had good luck with them - AFTER performing some mods to them.

I haven't even touched my programmer since this thread.

And yes, it was a 2716 I pulled out of that Pac-Man board.  Otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it.

Hi, Sorry for hijack this tread but seems like it nowhere to find info about this EZ-EP M2l programer anywhere no more, i have this for like 12 years and i just found it but i canot find the cable and the power supply, i been looking arround for pictures or somethink to tell me what kind of cable to use and for power i tried with a 9v DC +---(o--- -  and looks like  it powers on fine , and also find the cd with the software but no cable, it could be much of a trouble to ask you about some kind of schematics or if is just a straigth parallel cable.
