Kangaroo Cabinet?
« on: January 23, 2009, 10:36:38 am »
I started this project more than a year ago and have just let indecisiveness and procratanation kill my spirit. But I'm starting up again because I want this thing FINISHED.

I have an empty Kangaroo cabinet. Does anyone have experience with playing on one of these? How do you think it will work as a MAME machine? Its just gonna be 2 players. It seems a bit short for me (I'm 6'3-6'4). Are they all about the same height? Would casters help me out here?

I've had terrible luck with monitors. Bought a 20" floor model that had burn-in. Now I'm stuck with it. Just bought a 20" flat screen TV . . more burn-in. I can at least take that one back. UGH.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

For those who may not be familiar with a Kangaroo cabinet:

Mountain used an old Kangaroo to make a Mame arcade. Amazing work. Here is a link: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=63629.0

Isn't that really a Centipede (and also used for Food Fight) ?

All of those are ATARI games from the same era.
And Food Fight is distinctly different.
Heck, even Dig Dug has a similar style cabinet. (also Atari)

Don't hack up a classic please.

There's tons of general cabs that can be converted to MAME.

Its already been hacked up by the previous owner. It was a terrible looking MAME cab painted black and completely stripped.

I have a Centipede cab that is very similar in size & shape as the Kangaroo cab. It makes for a great MAME cab; I'm 6'1" and find it to be very comfortable to play.

And yes, just like Mountain, I hacked off the CP "ears" to get my custom CP to fit  :P .. the cab was already converted to a Neo-Geo setup, had no monitor or anything left of its original Centipede-ness.
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

Food Fight has round areas along the sides, rather than straight angles, to match the artwork. Here's a shot of the one at Funspot, with a couple of other Atari cabs for a good comparison. Kangaroo, Millipede, Centipede and Dig Dug (in that order)

So the Kangaroo actually looks to be more like the Dig Dug then to me.......

Looks that way to me too.

Somebody (with the requisite expertise and time) needs to make up a cab silhouette cheat sheet for Atari cabs.

Something like this, which I shamelessly stole from someone at KLOV:

I don't know if the CP being only SLIGHTLY different (as the Centipede and Kangaroo are)  is enough.

Looking at that blaster silhouette, I immediately think of Gyruss.
