What kind of hinges did you use to make all your panels open and close so flush?

I think I would have looked at having the entire main bumper (including wrap around ends) fabricated at a metal shop with "edges" similar to that 1/4" wrap under you see on some CPs, which slide into slots routed on the main cab. Fitting into a slot gives you the seamless look, without having to get a perfect fit. The uprights would be as you've done, added onto the main bumper via wood, bolts & bondo. Send the finished piece off to be chromed like the coin slot parts.

Wax paper wrapped lower cab, wood pieces, an lots of bondo / fiberglass + sanding is another way to go as well.

Love your re-done jukebox skin, lovely.

I don't know if it's feasible. I would try to use the cab to get the shape. I would wrap something protective around the cab and then start slapping on rectangular strips of fiberglass that are bigger than needed. After having gotten the desired thickness, I would let the stuff harden and then cut the final shape out with a jigsaw. Then I would go about adding the uprights like you are doing now.

Looking at it further, and knowing that I prefer to use as many "pre-fabricated" pieces as possible (ties into my abhorrance for re-inventing the wheel in software), the uprights on mine would have begun life as the pointed tips off a few cheap 1x2 yard stakes they sell in bundles at the big stores.

I assume the chroming process would be the same as the coin slit pieces, since you'd still take the finished piece to fully primed. Curious what the pricing would be on a piece that size.

BTW.  However this is no ordinary cab and will feature a limited selection of favorite console (and PC) games.

You're planning to emulate the console games, yes? I've seen a number of places online that do (and offer tutorials) USB conversions of console controllers. That plus an external USB jack hidden under our around your CP would seem the simplest solution. Though, um, this maybe should have been suggested prior to that gorgeous fiber glass finish being applied.

Yo do what you don Ond... One thing about opinions...they are like ---uvulas---, everyone has one.

In the end it's about what you want...ultimately the cab is going to be sitting in your house so as long as your satisfied with it that's all that matters. I think a majority of people are in awe of the cabinet it's self, not what's going to be on it, ya know?

From my own experience, I wouldn't build an authentic cabinet again. My cab was in my kitchen, and it was just mame. It got played some, but the novelty wore off a bit. When the original PC died, I modified the cabinet to have front-USB ports on the bezel. Then I used it for music, movies, internet, and old console games. I used my Xbox 360 PC controllers for most games, but NES games were fine with the arcade buttons and joystick. Much of the time, the keyboard just sat on top of my CP. It was hardly elegant, but it got used a whole lot more.

And after I switched PCs, the bottom half was empty. The cabinet was so bloody big, I used the bottom to store board games. But since I hadn't built the cabinet with storage in mind, it was a pain in the ass and never quite good. The only time it got used as an arcade cabinet was during parties, and we'd mostly stick to Joust.

Next time I'll either build a slimmer cabinet with built-in storage to minimize the impact in the room, or a more artistic piece, so it's a piece of respectable furniture in its own right.

I pretty much missed the whole console era, had no interest in it. Others here grew up with it i.e. younger guys.

I'm with you here. My first console was a Colecovision, and thankfully, it came with some sort of a joystick. I've played on the NES and other consoles, and my thumbs just don't work like others' do. Also, I get to say "GET OFF MY LAWN!" anytime I want, so there's that.

If I was building a classic cabinet shape, for starters I wouldn't be putting an LCD in it.  It would have a few choice mame games only or a dedicated board and a CRT.

A CRT would be awesome in this, but I assume a standard sized one (19") wouldn't physically fit. The curved surface of a classic spherical CRT goes along with the curves of the cabinet. Also, your cabinet reminds me somewhat of "futuristic" TVs from the '50s and '60s, such as this 1958 Philco Predicta:

The spherical tube is a huge part of what makes that TV look so cool. The effect could be simulated somewhat with a spherical piece of plexiglass covering the whole front of the monitor pod, like on the Panasonic Orbitel and similar "space age" TVs of the era, like the JVC Videosphere.

I think i am the LAST person that should offer suggestions on this project, but...haha

Since you're building a new computer for it, why not add bluetooth for the games that need analogue controls, and go with something like this? http://www.8bitdo.cn/fc30pro/  (can be purchased other places, but even the colours are close!)

Wow.

Your ability to fair complex shapes amazes me.  I think that in another life, you could have been a coachbuilder making one-off aluminum car bodies, or schneider trophy seaplanes.

Great work.
