My foray with magnets didn't turn out so well. I used high power neodymiums but it still wasn't quite enough to hold the PC box up to the underside of my buffet.

This is different what with the glass likely being lighter and being mounted vertical instead of horizontal.

Will you have registration pins on the glass (so that it'll line up "automatically" once the pins are lined up?). or it is stick it in place and jockey it around?  I found that even a slight gap diminishes the magnet stretch exponentially.

but I didn't play with harddrive mags like that. I'll have to scrounge a few now! I do love magnets!

It's near silent compared to my whirring linear actuator.  :lol
The action looks slick and the ratio of screen to bezel looks well balanced in both directions.
This half-sphere cabinet thing might catch on.

It would certainly make a good cocktail table.  Fun to watch the drinks rotate too.

Per the chart you're going to always rotate back to horizontal rather than doing a vertical version of the layout.   but the menu shows at 45/135 degrees?

Are the limit switches hit in the normal positioning of the monitor or are they over-limit safety switches?  I thought with the stepper motor you already had positive positioning taken care of.

Looks great! What system is that Cyvern game (0:50 in the rotation movie) running on? It's completely different from the MAME one...

I am a little bummed that the stepper setup doesn't yield full time positive positioning.  Does the motor controller setup allow for braking when not rotating?  Either way you have it solved by having it check in with the limit switches.

Omg. This just gets better & better. I think I'm going to cry.

That video of the rotation was beautiful. It's so quiet! I've already bought the parts to replicate weisshaupt's rotator, or I might have been pestering u to spoon feed me the details on yours.

At some stage I will turn my thoughts to a script to integrate with Mala specific to the stepper motor.  If anyone wants to give some thought to the code please be my guest.  I'm happy to swap some design / art time for some code time  :P

Here's the basic high level flow I had in mind:

[sorry to get people's hopes up but this is a reply and not Ond]

Heh Ond,

Can you display an animation whilst it's turning?

It would look freaky if you rotated the animation at the *same speed* as the screen turns... the animation would look static but the monitor would be rotating around it!

Maybe?  :dunno

What an incredible project, I am amazed every time this thread gets bumped!

FWIW, despite the unbelievably sexy design of the cabinet thus far, the lightning stencils and white letters seem like a step down from your normal aesthetic quality.  Something about the jaggedness of the lightning and the bland white lettering (largely meaningless to me at least, so meaningless to most casual viewers) is distracting and not visually pleasing alongside the smooth curves and bold colors elsewhere.  The stencils are "hijacking" the rest of the design.  It's kind of like if Steve Jobs had walked in on the original iPhone just before launch and said, "I know, let's put BLACK LIGHTNING on the side, that'll look AWESOME!", and no one had the nerve to tell him it wasn't that great of an idea. My 2 cents, again this is an incredible project!

Thanks Rick, that's a real muthaflocker!

As I mentioned here's a render to show the stencil art I intend to apply to the finished cab and the chrome pieces I've yet to create.  These are going to take some time to complete mainly due to the lengthy electroplating process.  The last piece I had done took around 5 weeks to come back to me from the chrome finisher.  While I'm waiting for those I'll be surface finishing the rest of the cab.  Ta ta for now.
