My guess: A mini hard rock opera based on OSC's Ender's Game, in 3 acts, complete with overture, aria, duet and finale, 20 minute duration.  I'm thinking about 15 tracks of guitars with lots of stereo chorus.  10 full minutes of stepper motor and gear train slow pan glamour shots.  Can't wait.

Still got 5/6ths of 2012 remaining to bring this one home.  (minus 1 day for Oz where today already happened) :P

I've been unwell with some virus so not much happening

Sorry to hear it. The crud is never fun. Get well soon.

And.... back to arcade stuff....  ;)

Were you setting things up to support light guns? I didn't think so, but I couldn't find mention in the thread one way or the other. (but it's a LONG thread, so I couldve missed it).

Light guns?  no, no plans to support em, you think I should?  You are the ideas man (and are So geeting a key  ;D).  E.g. that ring of light button mod, that was your idea, I just built it.

I was just wondering. With that cab, there's no real place to put holsters for them, and tacking anything onto the sides of it would just be blasphemous.

Now, if I could figure out how to do real wireless guns, I could DEFINITELY see a couple of converted water pistols like this maybe

Something retro, like a jetsons pistol, painted chrome and red with an aimtrack in it.

the light gun arena is getting closer to something like that!

Well, Commander Keen is 8, David Freedman in Flight of the Navigator was 12 and Alex Rogan in Last Starfighter was 16 or so. Ben Tennyson is 10 but that doesn't feel right.  Hmm, I'm vexed.

Must be a smart boy to garner a comparison to the Great Wiggin, of course with his father in the shed building flux capacitors out of thin air it's not surprising.  If you need some additional material though I'd liberally borrow from Alex Rogan and David Freedman.  Great characters.

Totally bogus teaser tho. I really thought I had nailed it down to Ender.

Yeah sorry, I opened my big gob way to early with the 'teaser'  OND was naughty.  The story board is done, so is the script, artwork is in progress, mocap is being sorted and music looks promising. Nuff said.

OND, you can have no idea how many frantic hours of "googling" you caused amongst the members of this board.  When I found out that the theme was created by you and not something that could be found on teh interwebs, I went from miffed to smug.  My amazing interweb searching prowess is no longer in question and all is right with the world.

Hack some wiimotes?  Not sure if they would work well though as never tried it out myself. You seem to like a challenge so how about hacking some gyroscopic mice?

 :laugh2:

I like it. It's got that "streamlined" 50's look that this cab has going.

I had initially thought the wiimote tack would be the way to go too, but I've never had much luck getting the wiimote to consistently pair with a PC. It's possible, but it's so fraught with "turn it on and pair, damn didn't work, reset bluetooth driver, turn off, turn back on, hold buttons down, pair again, damn didn't work, reset everything, wait a bit, try again, worked this time!", that I abandoned it.

My suspicion is that the BT drivers for the PC just aren't there yet for working with wiimotes. Supposedly the Gamii from Blue Soliel will do it. I just haven't been back around to try it.

So what are you using for 3D rendering, cause that looks freaking awesome when set to 11!!! Don't worry about being sick, it happens to all of us, and we all can wait to see progress. As always, you seem to be doing everything right and that is what counts.

P.S. I haven't updated the thread yet as it won't be much progress until after April 7th, but I'm starting to actually work on the Xenolix cabinet. My time is limited on projects before then, but after April 7th, it will shift to top priority to build it.

Must. Learn. To. Render.

A gun like that could be milled from billet aluminum in two halves by a cnc machine shop, and then polished to a mirror shine in the garage of a certain Aussie.

Ond - wicked sweet gun.  A bunch of us have been discussing off and on how go wireless on the aimtrak and we've come up no small form factor solutions... and neither has Andy (but we have high hopes).  Maybe going homebrew would be the best option.  A camera eye in each corner of the screen that follows and IR LED in the gun as a cursor and then just use any wireless trigger hack (wiimote, presentation clicker, wireless mouse) for fire and reload as an idea but there is a lot of ground to cover to make that work.

I don't know the measurements of that gun render, which is completely awesome by the way, but it looks like it wouldn't be the most comfortable to hold. The trigger guard looks a bit long, and it doesn't seem to leave space for 3 fingers below it to wrap around the grip. It could just be me looking at it wrong though, but when I envision holding it, my finger would be hanging off. I do have fat fingers, btw.

As far as wireless options, I think using a wiimote is the best hope for a light wireless lightgun. I have tested them on PC with a Bluetooth adapter, and they did work great, with the pointer working like a mouse. I know there were problems getting it to recognize in Mame though.

This thread should be a good starting point though: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=89378.0

The EMS Topgun III is wireless. I sure a genius like yourself could transfer the guts and probably even get the sensor bars apart and mostly hidden.....

Thanks for the tip! hmmm sensor bars, ok I'll have to look into it.

Just for you Michael,  rifling added (ain't it a ray gun?? but you're right rifling looks better), slightly tapered down muzzle and a longer grip so Vigo can comfortably hold it.   8)

Now that ray gun could house my fat fingers!  :lol

The gun looks incredible! I can't wait to see you bring it to life!  :notworthy:

I believe they have little IR sensors. I'm sure you could de-case them and do something clever, but it may not be the best solution, my $.02..... :dunno

If it's anything like most IR "sensor bars", there's actually no sensor at all in them, it's just a small array of IR LED's that the IR camera in the "controller" can key off of.

The Wiimote and Aimtrak both work like that. I rigged out a "sensor bar" with a piece of circuit board 5 or 6 IR LEDs from radio shack and a few resistors. Stuffed it in a piece of copper tube with holes in it, and presto, steampunk sensor bar.

Maybe the topgun is different though. Haven't worked with one of them yet.

Well apparently Ond built that phaser but it was so good, when he fired it, it took him to the future cause we haven't had updates in a bit ;)

Haha, jokes aside, hope all is well in Ond's world, as we all know "real life" can take away from time on our personal projects.

Well apparently Ond built that phaser but it was so good, when he fired it, it took him to the future cause we haven't had updates in a bit ;)

Haha, jokes aside, hope all is well in Ond's world, as we all know "real life" can take away from time on our personal projects.

He was posting a bunch in the Auto-Rotating thread this last month so he's still around.

Just for you Michael,  rifling added (ain't it a ray gun?? but you're right rifling looks better), slightly tapered down muzzle and a longer grip so Vigo can comfortably hold it.   8)

It's not rifling... it a series of spiral phased coil arrays!   ;D

Nice job!

The topguns are the same way.  The only concern is getting the correct spacing as the originals to more easily calibrate them.
