I've been quiet this whole time ('cept somewhere in the beginning) but still been watching, and I must say this thing is phenomenal.

Question:
On that yellow chrome back plate, did you sand back the cog pocket or did the putty shrink in the oven?

Huh?  I'm probably missing something but from what I see:

A picture of the cog covered in wax setting in a shallow circular depression on the coin slot mounting plate surrounded with fresh bondo.

A picture of the coin slot mounting plate after it has come out of the oven with the cog removed and the bondo still sticking up beyond the front of the plate.

A picture of the coin slot mounting plate after the bondo has been sanded down flush with the front of the plate and the "teeth" on the edge sanded so their profile matches the plate.

Wow... it's been a while since I last saw your progress, it's looking very impressive!  I really like the idea of the control panel, as I have done something similar myself. I made a control panel and a controller that fits into the cp. No screws, no bolts are seen. Mine is based around portability and easy access, so I did it that way.

This is the best build out there... period. Keep it up

Wow!  :notworthy: :notworthy: Absolutely brilliant use of the coin mech to fit it for your purposes. Did you just shoot from the hip on that one, or did you figure it out before even buying the coin mech? Either way, it is a stroke of genius.

I would say looking great so far but "great" is so inadequate.  When this cab is done, I hope you are insuring it for at least 25K.

The coin return + coin box door should be painted with flames coming out the bottom of that rocket (coin slot) like it's taking off.

Painted flames? Come on.

I want to see an actual blue-white jet of flame spewing from that rocket when you put a quarter in!

All you need is a little sticker somewhere that says "Play at your own risk!". That way, you're covered.

Awesome update btw  :applaud:

It would be very cool if there was a led that was activated as money are put in the slot that creates the flame effect. Or paint the flame with UV color and have a UV light turn on to show it on coin activation.  But... would that be doable?

The tinted and toughened glass will be completely smooth and free of any screws or mounting bolts on the outside surface.  Should be cool.

Cool?

Sounds awesome!  :droid

Nice.

I just had a windshield replaced and they used a tube of this thick black silicone glue to attach the new one. Are you going to paint the back of the glass to hide the edges?

Hadn't heard of oled paint, but i DO know you can get EL sheeting. that stuff is flexible and can be cut to whatever shapes you want

There are different colors available...

In your case, you could cut several individual elements out, wire them independently (so that they essentially act like seperate LEDs) and then just control them as you would an LED, make them flash, animate them etc.

I'm having a hard time visualizing what it could look like, but I know that's one possible approach.

To remove the glass from the monitor will require a double cup suction lifter, the kind cable dudes use to lift floor tiles in server  rooms (anyone know what I mean?)  one of these puppies.

I immediately knew what you were talking about :P If you feel like going really fancy you can attach super strong magnets to the glass and hold it in magnetically. This is the same way that the newer Apple iMacs hold their front glass on.
Where's my gold star :P

Love the work man it's very nice :)
Great design and fantastic skill

And I know what you mean about the tile suction cups ;)

I do have a suggestion though with the talk of the flame under the rocket and this going for a retro-futuristic look I can see neon flames under the rocket working well there it would match the theme I believe.

Now of course neon tubing isn't the best idea for that spot but I was thinking if you used EL wire for that spot it could work nicely as if done right it can look like neon tubing but it's smaller and looks more futuristic.

Just a thought if your still going for the flame look

You can also get some plexi etched and light that up then use another piece behind it etched as well lit up in a different colour I've done it before and it works great and can make the flame animated as well but but I think it would be way too thick to be used.

Great work as always  :applaud:

I've seen etched plexi lit and it is quite impressive.  Hmmm, could be edge lit from different angles with sequenced ultra bright LEDS to produce a kind of flame effect.

An idea I was toying with way back (I posted it somewhere in this thread) was to use fibre optic cable for some effects.  I put it out of my mind and got on with the build.  I have a bunch of printed info on Edge Emitting Fiber from a supplier here in Australia that I'll dig up and revisit.  The centre of the cog-coin slot glows white 'hot' (Iron Man style) when the cab is on, any flame effect should be in line with that.  Of course you all realise you're setting me some kind of complicated challenge here.  Painted on flames just won't cut it eh?   Alright then.    >:D

I didn't think of that I was thinking of 3 pieces of plexi that had different shapes etched so the first would be white then next yellow then orange for the last bit and have them turn on one after the other to make it look like the rocket was taking off like if you put in a coin the rocket blasts off then stops etc.

I think one piece of plexi with alternating colours around the edge would give you a sort of movement I think.

The attention to detail on this project is outstanding!

I think painted flames would be a mistake, they would be appropriate if the rocket was also painted;

However, the rocket in question is more like an architectural detail, and so the flames should be as well.

Something in this vein;

would still afford the opportunity to light it if you wished.

K, been a lurker for a while now (I first came here after trying to find help with a broken button on my machine) and seen a lot of amazing projects. This is great, but imho maybe the flames are in danger of making this the Katie Price of the arcade world????? of course it's your machine, and you'll make it awesome, but I feel flames might detract from the smooth, organic feel of the build.

But meh, what do I know? I'm no OND..
