It looks gorgeous so far.

One question though... Why isn't the spinner centered?

For some reason it keeps really catching my eye.

One question though... Why isn't the spinner centered?

I appears to me that the spinner IS centered, but it's centered to the whole cab, not the blue CP insert. Looks like the blue inserts are spaced according to a comfortable layout of joysticks and buttons, which is what's causing the offset.

If you tried to center everything visually, it looks like you'd probably squish player 2's joystick too close for comfort.

Then again I could be talking out of ---my bottom---.  :blah: :blah: :blah:
Man, will my cab EVER be finished?

for the same reason some folks will be bothered by it being off centre in the insert, others will like the 'off symmetry' approach.

You're right about that; I do like the asymmetric approach.  Especially here, where you've made it fairly subtle.  Symmetry is great, but a CP isn't symmetrical to begin with (unless you have one right- and one left-handed set), so I think it works well.

Looking great, man.  Your painting skills appear to be as sharp as your design skills.  This thing is going to look so bad-ass. 8)

I think I would like the asymmetric look if it was the whole blue section rather than the items in it.

Since the blue sections break the controls up into groups, they could be placed anywhere on the red and I think they would look fine as long as the controls in them were centered.

Oh well. It's not mine to look at every day (unfortunately :)) and in the grand scheme of things with this gorgeous cab, it is pretty minor. It just kept drawing my attention, so I had to ask about it.

I do think I agree with that, actually.  I might also like it better that way.  But I don't know if there'd have been a way to do it better than this.  If the middle blue section around the spinner had been narrowed so there was equal blue space on each side, then there'd be a larger gap between it and the P2 blue section than on the P1 side.  The only thing I can think of that might approach what you're after would be to add blue space to the left of the P2 stick, and I think that would look equally odd, personally.

At the same time, I think Ond was right when he said "it grows on you."  The blue space seems sort of inviting, as if it calls out "rest your hand here to use the spinner."  Unlike other layouts I've seen that seem to say "hell, I dunno...you figure it out."

Ond: I actually hadn't noticed the difference in the gaps from the CP edges until you said something.  Again, subtle; I like it.  :applaud:

@Ond

You know a paint finish is hot when you keep bringing the pics back up to stare at them...damn nice job.  Sure the gray matches but hopefully you go with your original thoughts as that will look even better.

Question...how are you about people touching your stuff...what I am getting at is are you actually going to let anyone touch it without gloves lol? Or are you pretty good about people touching your things?  I know my personality and I would be way too anal with such a nice paint job... to the point where I would likely tick people off and they wouldn't want to touch it ;)

Make sure you offer dinner and drinks first.  Err.

 ;)

Actually, that's a great question, as we've all come to think of Ond's cab as more of a 'work of art' than an arcade cab.

Agreed; I keep thinking it belongs in a glass case, or roped off like a museum display.  On the other hand, it would be a damned shame if no one ever got to play on the thing.

Not happy at all. What the hell happened to that cool coin mechanism/delivery system you were cooking up on page 2? Do you think you can leave loose ends just because this thread is 19 pages long?

I'm starting to feel an idea gel in the back of my head.

And here I was, thinking I was getting close to done with my cab  ;)

Nice work as usual. Your painting skills far surpass mine. Heck, i tend to use chip brushes, old socks, and lots of wipe on poly  :-[

I've been playing with methods of replicating ond's button lighting idea (reply #131) and think I am pretty close.

What I am doing so far is using a nylon washer that's slightly too small, its not visibly smaller than the button but you can feel it.  That way I have no construction in the diffuser.  Cutting my hand gives me not perfectly flat surfaces, I sand them flat but they are at a slight angle which I dislike.  I have a pretty good idea how to set up a jig to do this for me, however.  I'll post pictures afterwards if others are interested enough.

EvilNuff,

I give a +5 and a HECK yeh. Presently designing my cabinet and I put a bookmark with an asterisk next to that post. I would love to use RGB LEDs to illuminate my buttons to game-specific colors, but not so "in your face". The illuminated ring idea was awesome, and a way to do this consistenly across a CP with some 14-16 buttons without it taking 2 hours a piece would be a dream come true.

I definitely would like to see your approach -- and I'd bet there's definitely a market for these! I thought one could cut the buttons fairly accurately if they are clamped in a chop saw, but haven't tested this. It was the furnishing of Ond's diffuser that would have been my nemesis.

Ond, way back on page 2 you're doing the filling followed by the automotive spray putty. Great details. But I thought I recalled somewhere in the many pages between there and now that there were some cracks in the finish that showed up later on due to temperature changes? The painted cab looks gorgeous and I don't see any deficiencies at all, so I assume you sorted it out. Did you do anything differently? Just refinish the cab the same way as before? Am I totally misremembering this occurring?

Well no luck so far in creating an easy reliable way to duplicate Ond's buttons.  I found some 3/8" translucent white nylon washers (my happ button plungers are 22mm which is very slightly larger than 3/8")...  Buying pre-made washers makes the insert no effort at all.

The problem I am having is cutting the button plungers evenly.  Its really hard to get a perfectly even cut...the best idea I have so far is a pipe cutter but I don't have one suitable for plastic.

EvilNuff, yeh, even with a pipe cutter, you get a smooth, but not necessarily straight cut.

That's why I suggested a miter/chop saw. With the right blade, if you clamp the button plunger into place, you'll get a perfect 90 cut, no? I just finished building two 4' x 6' pro hockey nets out of PVC and the chop saw made perfect cuts like butter on over 20 pieces.

Ond, it's such a great effect! My desire is to not land an airplane with my control panel, but to illuminate the correct buttons/colors for specific game play while maintaining the look of a desired panel. Honestly, I think white or black buttons would be the two primary options. I think most would desire RGB LEDs for the purpose customizing whatever they want. In my case, I already have my LEDs, so a simple drilled hole to hold them would suffice.

I just picked up ~30 Happ Comp buttons from Crayola as part of a bunch of stuff he was selling in that B.S.T. forum. There are a few colors I don't need, and would gladly donate them to you (or EvilNuff) for the cause of R&D. Certainly the more heads pouring into this, the quicker something can come to either a means to accomplish, or to market for the masses.

@EvilNuff & wxforecaster - These buttons,  they have become popular (well the idea has).  Given the interest in them I've been pondering a way I can turn them out myself much more quickly.  The time it would take given the method I used on the prototype would not be worth my while.  I will give this some further thought, if I could crank them out at a reasonable rate I'd make them available for sale.

If it were possible to efficiently turn them out, I'm wondering what colors would people be interested in? ...

I wouldn't care about the LED Ond, that's easy enough to install myself.  I would be interested in any of the standard happ comp button colors just cut & modified.  And honestly nylon washers take a *lot* of the effort out of it.  The only thing I cannot do easily/consistantly is cut the button perfectly.  If you can figure that out I'd be thrilled.  I'll attach 3 pics for you.  The first is my modified button (the best of my attempts with the washers  :applaud:), the other two are the button lit with a green GGG LED in dim light and normal room light.  You can see its not perfect by any means but I think it looks great, very similar to Ond's prototype and, IMO, proves that purchased washers will work fine.

I think the cutter would be straight as long as the button lays flat in the rollers...I may try it anyways.

I actually tried to create a miter/jig.  I drilled a hole into some scrap wood and very carefully measured and cut a perfectly parallel cut through.  Then I clamped the button in and used it as a guide and it still wasn't as even as I can get just manually cutting it with a dremel cutting wheel.

Did you have a specific miter/chop saw in mind?  I'll reread the thread and see.

Great work on the paint Ond! I'm planning my paint right now after my little leave of absence.

@EvilNuff & wxforecaster - I've used the ring method on my buttons and had good luck with using my table saw and a simple jig to cut the buttons. I also went to a local engraver and had them cut out my plexi...something to think about if you have a bunch of them to make.  Here's a link to my build, just look at post #1 to get the general idea.

Well that's a fantastic idea ninja...sheesh wish I had found that before fiddling with all my ideas for a jig that didn't work! LOL  Now I need to find an engraver in Dallas.

+1 to ninja. Amazing how our brains operate. I took one look at your jig and (assuming EvilNuff did the same thing) did a massive faceplant.  :banghead:

Between that and the ingenius dowel holder idea, I think you're really onto something.

BTW, if you're still looking for good polishers, most of the pinball community swears by the Novus stuff (and I've personally used it with great success) on playfield plastics. Would surely work outstanding here too.

Now, if you can get a pre-made plexi disc the same thickness as that eaten away by the saw blade, you're guaranteed getting back to the original button height every time.

Pre-made discs would be hard to find, but plexi comes in many thicknesses. Should be pretty easy to find some that's the same thickness as a blade; most blades, AFAIK, are about 1/8" wide.
