So I get back from a 10 day vacation all rested and ready to go back to work on my cab....  :o OMFG!  :o
I think I'm going to set it on fire instead...  :badmood:
Or maybe donate it to Mythbusters so they can build a big trebuche and throw it from a skyscraper on to a totally oblivious Buster.

I'm starting to think that you enjoy the BUILD more then the actual playing of the games, Ond?
Fantastic work!  :applaud:

 :applaud:

Is that the actual button layout you're considering? I've found that having the buttons lined up straight like that is pretty uncomfortable on your wrists. You'd do better with some curved placement such as on a SEGA Astro City:

Never mind the 7th button placed to the left near the joysticks... And thanks for the update!

I'd agree with emphatic about the button layout. I +really+ like the curved 7 button layout, and it was a total leap of faith for me. I just decided on that layout after reading as many posts as a could (and yet I STILL went with angled p3-4 sticks :-\

See the Benderama thread
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=84113.msg880206#msg880206

But if a straight layout works for you, go for it! That cab's awesome either way!

as always...looking good.  it is just amazing to see the things that you have done with this project.  You not only managed to design something so completely awesome, but you managed to build it too.  this is just too impressive.

you are an inspiration to us all.

keep up the good work, and keep posting those pics :)

Looking great as per usual bud, but then I don't expect anything less now :)

If you are after the Astro City layout (highly recommended!) you can find dimensions as well as a printable template [here]. I can't view that page as its blocked at work but from memory it is the 7th layout down (just using the first six buttons).

As for button choice I deffo think you should go Jap. I prefer the Seimitsu buttons over Sanwa ones but that's just personal preference.

Your welcome bud.

I've got the button mod sorted for the Seimitsu PS-14-KN/GN's if you are interested but it should be able to applied to most other buttons too. I am using buttons with a translucent plunger + inset artwork so that's the first button I worked on.

As you know there is much less button to play with than the Happs which makes it much harder to remove material from the plunger, mainly because its so damn hard to hold the thing!

Anyway I eventually came up with a fixture to hold them and removed 2mm from the face of the plunger:

I'm then going to turn some 2mm discs of cast acrylic to light in the same way as your button mod. I made some nylon discs for a start just to check the idea worked. I'm going to put a piece of aluminium foil in between the plunger and the artwork to stop the LED lighting the artwork:

You can 'just' fit two 5mm holes in the bottom of the buttons for LEDs.

The snap in type buttons have a smaller microswitch which can give you a little more room to work with.

However mounting the LEDs here means get a lot of spotting as the LEDs are mounted directly below the edge of the disc, unlike the Happs mod where the LED is in the center of the button. To counter this I am going to make some black nylon LED holder inserts to mount the LEDs as close to the microswitches inner shaft and center of the button as possible.

If you can't do some of this yourself maybe I could trade you for the work you are doing for me?

Ond: I you have no experience with Japanese buttons, the general difference is that Sanwa's are a bit more sensitive, so if you (like me) like to rest your fingers on the buttons, accidental presses are likely to occur. The Seimitsu's IMHO, are perfectly balanced for most games. Keep in mind though, that neither brands offer the 'click' sounds of HAPP ore similar brand buttons, but are about as silent as leaf switch buttons. In addition, Seimitsu offer "pearl" finish on their buttons, that I personally find very classy and have installed on all of my cabinets:

+1. Thats exactly why I prefer Seimitsu's.

Cool, look forward to seeing it.  I've pretty much decided to go with the Seimitsus.  Here's my 'take II' on the 2P CP design.  I set the 6 button positions directly from the Sega Astro City (Player 1) layout.  I've swapped out the Happ style buttons for the 30mm Semitsus.  Hmmm I think I prefer the red CP lid as well.  The white discs are of the same material my coin slot is made of and can be LED lit to indicate two player etc.  It's nearly beer o'clock on a Friday..... weekend, here I come.

I like the 'wider' style pushbutton of the Japanese buttons, even if it is just a render.

Jeez that's pretty. Do you plan on labels in the CPO as well? I'm curious about the three buttons at the top.

Looks great bud. I wish I could do nice renders. I can draw in AutoCAD a little in 3D but that's about it. I will have to take a look at those links you posted before

Glad to hear you are using the Seimitsu buttons, I'm sure you will love them. I'm just working on the CAD for the mod at the moment and will post it later.

Lucky you that its beer o'clock. Its 11am here. Still a little early for a beer, only just tho! :)

Hope you have a nice birthday tomorrow, enjoy playing with your new tablet. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it ;)

The three white buttons are: 1 Player, Escape/Exit, 2 Player.  There will also be 'Retro' artwork on the red space on the CP.

Protip: Don't put the exit button so close to start buttons. This WILL get accidentally pushed, no doubt, especially when beer is in the picture. Better use it as a "shift" button (at least in MAME) and exit games by holding it and pressing fire 1 or something.

I just had a really bold idea: How about whenever you press that button, it lits a lamp inside your cp creating a back lit effect showing hidden text? This would only need a bit of transparent glass/plastic on that part of the cp, and a layer that has the text underneath the CPO.

that looks amazing...i do however have to agree with emphatic...an exit button that close to the start buttons is just asking to get pressed accidentally.    perhaps it would work good as a pause button, and set it up so that pause + start 1 = exit or something like that.

there is nothing more annoying that your idiot friend hitting the exit button accidentally in the middle of a game

That very situation can be very frustrating -- I've lived it once too many times. Let me just say that Double Dragon is a very long game when you try to 'one credit' it, and my buddy and I were all the way to Machine Gun Willie....*POW*...back to my front end.

Here's my post (read: RANT!) on remapping 'Escape'

Am I allow to hate you yet? I know that my MAME cabinet is ambitious and if I ever get more time into it, it will be fantastic, but you have some super awesome ideas and woodworking skills. This cabinet is very good and looks sturdy with still a great atmosphere look to it.

P.S. What is that on the display for the horizontal and vertical screen test?
Where's my gold star :P

:notworthy:  Dam Ond, your accuracy in building is out of this world.  The precision of building that hemisphere so it would perfectly surround the monitor is uncanny.  I am sure you had a little fiddling to get the placement just right but it couldn't have been much.  How are you going to skin the hemisphere, fiberglass?

@emphatic- I like the backlit label idea, I was thinking along these lines myself, Lit shifted selections, button labels and joysticks/ Pinball plunger are also on my to do list.

Cool, if anyone can pull this off it's you Ond. That horizontal screenshot looks like 1944 to me btw.

Lookin unreal as per usual bud :).

Looks like you bought the Seimitsu-PS-14-DN's I think you will need the Seimitsu PS-14-GN-CP's if you want to light them in the same way as your Happ mod. Ive been working on it and am now on prototype #6 .I love these little projects where there is minimal space/material to work with. I'm just finalising the 15 degree endmill jig required to machine the holes in the nylon inserts.

Woah, you're rotating the entire face of the, um, front?  I guess I assumed you were going to fix dark glass over everything and have the LCD rotate behind it.  I'm sure you got it figured out, but are you putting felt or anything between to keep any scraping noise away?

Keep it up.  Most addictive.  Thread.  Evar.
