you can definitely see similarites there.  this project is just simply amazing.

on a side note, why isnt Computer Space emulated in mame?

If I had to guess, probably for the same reasons Pong isn't.

"The driver for "Pong" was pretty much an ad-hoc attempt at simulating the circuitry of the original machine, and it wasn't following any tracable path from the original circuitry to the driver (in other words, the writer "played it by ear," so to speak). The "pseudo-CPU" used for timing purposes was a kludge, also. Because MAME's mission is accuracy, and since the Pong driver wasn't sufficiently accurate, the driver was dropped. I've been informed that, should one actually attempt to properly simulate the circuitry (like using the video clock as a timebase), then it would be accurate enough for inclusion in MAME. However, simulation of discrete circuitry involves a jump of thinking over regular emulation programming (involving as it does the simulation of electric components normally overlooked in regular emulation--diodes, transistors, etc.--as well as the emulation of any ICs that may still be present.), and I don't know of anyone who has made such a faithful attempt yet."

Space war is in Mame, and as I understand it, is pretty close to Computer Space, so I just play that.

There was an emulator that started being worked on a little over a year ago for ICs. All it ever included though was Pong and a couple other similar games. Ended up working fairly well though.

I know someone like retrofuture understands this perfectly (duh).

Oh yeah. To me retro is faded red and green with slight sepia tones (or what ever printing techniques where used at the time of your retro - whenever it may be). Space Ships Away!

I love this cab  :applaud:

Rad! I can't wait to see it in place! You must have the patience of a saint with this project. What with all the warped wood pieces, the custom button testing and the hemisphere.

Totally love this project Ond. Dr. Light would be proud.  ;D

You know that feeling you have when you witness superhuman effort on something? Like when Tiger Woods bounces a golf ball on his iron for 30 seconds and smacks it from mid air, or when you see some table tennis phenom blizzing around in a blurr of paddles and balls?

You just kind of stop trying to comprehend and just simply accept the fact that you're witnessing something supernatural.

That's how I feel about this cab.  8)
Man, will my cab EVER be finished?

Very impressive work Ond, I'm proud* of you!

Seriously, though, I'd worry about having the whole thing hold with MDF, I would use metal bars or something in the "neck", MDF is not that strong IMHO.

Awesome looking computer rendering, but I just know the real thing will look even better when it's done.  :applaud: So if I'm not mistaken, the whole dish won't rotate with the monitor, right? Do you intend to have some sort of blinking lights or something from behind the monitor when the rotating takes place to enhance the awesomeness?  :afro:

Thanks very much for all the very encouraging comments folks (I'm not worthy of some of them, jeez  :) )it's great to know that my design which is not along the lines of 'classic arcade cabs' has your approval.  It means a lot to me.  I'm sure there are folks who prefer classic designs and of course the purist in me is right there with you, I was there in the decades when they ruled so I have that nostalgic attachment to them as well.

Why feel that you have to take a "purist" approach with a Mame machine? The ability to create your own unique arcade machine is perhaps the best aspect of the philosophy of build your own Mame machine. This isn't a restoration project or saving a gutted, otherwise destined for the trash bin cab that deserves to be respected for what it is, this is a one of a kind creation. The best Mame machines on here are the ones that are very unique and are put together by folks who are a little more than talented woodworkers, rather true artisans in every since of the word!  That's exactly what this is, this is the stuff that folks around here CRAVE, and aspire to build themselves. Don't take my word for it, just look at all the cabs in the Mamey sections. Really dude, I mean it, this is turning out to be that good!

With the glass rotating with the screen, it's going to have to be centered very well! Otherwise you might get snags?

Who'd of thought it.  I was bowling with my family the other day when I spotted a Space Invaders II cab in very good condition.  I forgot all about bowling and went over to check it out.  I was enthusiastically explaining the monitor system to my 14 y/o who just stood there and said “Dad it's your go!”.

Lol so, so true...I was watching Aventureland with my wife last night and kept pausing it when the arcade games came into view to see what cabs they were..some authentic and even a few fictional ones...but ya old cabs catch my eye immediately.

Now for the fan drooling part...

Amazing DIY work, Ond... enjoying the trip pictures.

I scanned through the posts quickly looking for the CAD app you're using, but didn't find it (or overlooked it).  Do you have a background in it or self-taught?  I'm spending some time trying to advance my CAD design skills and just curious about the app you're using.

Is GMax still around? I thought it was discontinued years ago. (I've been using 3ds since like version 2). Another great app is SolidWorks. ProE and Inventor are competing products. SolidWorks is dimension driven where 3DS is vertex. None of these are free though.

My Project has been modelled in SolidWorks. The advantage of dimension driven design is that if you say, alter the width of your cab, it can drive the length/width of all panels etc, right down to keeping that hole in the monitor frame centered. A damn sight better than Google Sketch-ups dimension driven plugin... of course, as aforementioned, not free.

Autodesk no longer support GMax but it is still available for download.  I've played with various modelling apps over the years including Maya and Lightwave, overall for what you get with 3DS MAX I've yet to see anything better but then it all gets down to personal preference and what you know/ have learned/ feel most comfortable with.

BTW I use the 'Scale' feature in Max to alter dimensions, scale over either x,y or z axis or combo's thereof.

Glad to hear that GMax is still going, that one was a great idea IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I love 3DS and still actively use it. SolidWorks is in a completely different field. Maya and Lightwave are competing products, SolidWorks is not in competition with 3DS. I actually use both in conjunction with each other. Engineering models are designed in SolidWorks and then imported into 3DS for texture/animation. I modelled my cabinet in SolidWorks and imported to 3DS for painting, graphic designs etc.

[pimp]
If you scaled the width of your cabinet, your side panels would reduce in thickness. Trust me, if you can ever get your hands on SolidWorks give it a shot. Sounds like you've got your experience in 3D modelling and that will carry through to SolidWorks easy enough. ;)

I was going to stop my pimping there but I'll leave you one little tid-bit. You've no doubt had your share of pain with boolean operations in 3DS ;) In SolidWorks you don't even think twice about drilling holes in the CP. I have a pattern sketched out mapping hole center's that can easily be changed in either mm or inches. Routing has been done where joysticks will be mounted and I have even cut out the t-mold groove. Overkill? Yes. But try boolean that in 3DS... and then change the width of the panel ;)
[/pimp]

okay, yes it would be possible to adjust the width of the CP even after all the Boolean operations if you left your Modifier List in tact.

Wise choice with the splines! I'm not debating at all. Like I said, I still use 3DS. I just thought SolidWorks was worth a mention is all.

Solidworks is the only way to go with this technical stuff!  I'm an AD Inventor (a direct SW competetor) user professionally and find it worthless, I mean priceless.  3DSmax/Maya/Lightwave are good for the out-the-box conceptualization and brainstorming and rendering, but the mechanical apps are invaluable for laying down objects and changing dimensions around in a more real-world, machine shop environment where you want the result to exactly match your 3D concept.

I also hear Rhino is a good mix between dimension-driven 3D and freehand sculpting, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

Anyways... I can't get enough of this thread.  Your design is so complex but so simple.  I love it!

When I started my drafting degree, the first 3D modeler they had us use was Inventor. It seemed so cool at the time, but once I learned SolidWorks it was over. I like ProE too, but it's not nearly as user-friendly for quick projects... ::)

Yeah, I'm not sure which I'd rather use right now.  I certainly have some serious beefs with AD, but I've used SW a bit and it had it's shortcomings.  I started with R4 and it was complete garbage.  I'm still with it at r2009 and a ton of things have been ironed out.  But it's still a love/hate ralationship.  Hell, I learned drafting on ACAD r10, and any version of IV is still miles ahead of any ACAD3D or MechDesktop.

From the articles and reviews I see, it seems to be a see-saw battle as far as performance.  When it comes to exchanging models - like forums like this - the SW community is much bigger.  In fact, the whole support community is immeasurable, which is really worth more than the license cost.

When looking for a new job though, all they care about is if you have boolean experience.  They don't care if it's IV, Alibre, SW, whatever... the principal is the same.
