Artwork now available! X-Men 6 Player cab!
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:37:28 pm »
I scored one for a great price.  The owner tells me that it powers on but doesn't work.  Both monitors are intact with no burn in (so he says).  It's the rare 6-player version.   :applaud:

Here's my question.  I'm about to pick it up, but will it fit in a standard doorway?  Does it come apart?  That thing is HUGE!  I'm suspecting that the front part (control panel and coin door part) comes off from the rear part with the monitors, but it's so hard to tell from the pictures.

Anyone know?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your cab...I wonder if it could be MAME'ized easily? I don't have the dimensions off hand of the cab but here is another pic of it for comparison purposes:

That doesn't sound like a good idea?  Neither does Maming that cab!

The cab does come apart, IIRC.  CP area from monitor area, and one of the monitors in the back also detaches.  It's in a large box in the back.  Be careful, and have help nearby.  It's a beast.

It makes sense if the mainboard is not serviceable and he can't find a replacement for it  :banghead:

Before you bang your head too much, perhaps you should explain what you mean by "MAMEize" (tm?) ?

It doesn't make much sense to turn it into a generalized MAME cab, which is the image that your suggestion evokes. Do you mean something less destructive ?

I think it would make a great MAME cab.

There's a few ways you could go with it.

Idea #1: Replace the two monitors with one widescreen monitor and use it to play widescreen arcade games like Street Fighter IV, Tekken 6, Virtua Fighter 5, or  Blaz Blue.

Idea #2:  Keep both monitors and double the image on both screens.  This would still make the cab great for a 4-player situation, or for players to have separate monitors.  Also, you could potentially play Nintendo VS games in it.

Idea #3:  Use the ginormous control panel to make one hell of a frankenstein.  You've got room for just about every control imaginable.

Idea #4 Make it two cabinets.

The fact that it is so big isn't really that much of an issue .  If he's got the room for it in his garage or basement, and it will let you have a satisfactory gameplay experience, then it's fine IMO.

For novelty value I'd advise against any kind of MAME conversion unless it's a cheap way to replace the damaged original game. As it's such a unique cab, at the very least leave the shell/controls intact and have it as a dedicated 4-player game MAME cab as these games used less buttons and the extra space this cab offers will help, plus you can have the true 6-player gameplay of X-Men when you want it.

Even though the game was a bit so-so as far as fighters went, it would be a nice cab to preserve or restore if you can befor considering a conversion.

What about a total reversible mame conversion, i mean just replacing the board with a PC that runs only the game that you are replacing (you will need 2 Jpac or Jammasd , or build your own protection for from the 31kHz to do that anyhow), you will have to build an adapter that feed the video signal from jamma ( or VGA)  to the screens and a keyboard encoder that will read the buttons .
You can use this solution until you find a working board. but avoid any  modification on  the cab.
Just build and use use converters and please don't cut/hack anything.

Just edited to remove errors.

Why would you have to MAME it at all?  Every part is available for sale.  If it's a monitor problem get them repaired.  If it's a PCB problem buy a new one (I just bought an XMEN PCB for $41 shipped off eBay.).  If it's a power supply problem then replace the PSU with a nice cheap $20 switcher.

If you aren't trying to keep it original and just MAME it go ahead, you will just make every other 6 player in existence worth more.

I'd like to point out that DeLuSioNal29 hasn't said one word about converting his new cabinet into anything.  All he asked about was taking it apart to get it inside his place.

I'm thinking it's gonna be fun to see the pictures of him getting it into a truck and hauling it, let alone moving it inside.   ;D

Nice score.  Get it working and we'll all be over for a few games.     :applaud:

Wow, thats an amazing find!

I remember going down to the local comic book shop and playing that arcade almost every day! I have it on my MAME cab, but to have the full 6 player version would be awesome.

Hope you have a lot of friends to help!

While I certainly played this one back in the day I always wished Capcom had written the actual game. I like the art style from the Capcom X-men fighters quite a bit better along with the some nice Final Fight style beatemup game play.

I'd mame that sucker with a 42"+ widescreen LCD and bezel it to 4:3 in a heartbeat :P
But then again, I never did get the itch for restoring originals. I'd have purchased that monster for the same reason I purchased my showcase.

I believe Delusional already has a mame setup though, having two would be kinda redundant, no?

Great idea, I hadn't thought of a PC in the interim.  Good idea.   :applaud:  But I do have some solutions up my sleeve.  I will try to re-seat all of chips first on the original PCB.  Also, I am working on obtaining a backup PCB as well that is working.   ;D

As far as "MAMEing" it into something else though:  Definitely out of the question.  I want to restore it to it's original glory!

I took a look at it last night.  Wow, huge is an understatement!  It's monstrous!  But it does indeed come apart as Peale suggested.  The front panel has 6 screws holding it on that are accessible by lifting up the hinged control panel and climbing inside (yeah, an adult would fit in there without any issues).  The monitor on the back also has a box which is also removable.  I plan to grab it in two stages.  The Control panel in the back of my SUV and the other chunk in a friend's pick-up (not full size unfortunately, which is why we have to take it apart).

But I'm having trouble locating the replacement CPO for it.  Anyone have any ideas?  Mamemarquees.com only has the 2 or 4 player versions, not the 6.

I believe it's a feature originally integrated on the the PCB.  I've seen auctions on the 6 player PCB and most images that are displayed on the "test monitor" that people show have the image cropped.
Does this cab splits the image of any video source or is that feature integrated with the game board?

Found this image, but still no way of obtaining it yet.

Edit:  Scott at Mamemarquees.com supplied me with the high quality Photoshop file of the 4 player version.  I just need to edit that one into a 6 player version.  (if anyone would like to assist let me know... It's tough to find the original graphics of the characters).

It would be an interesting idea to have 2 consoles side by side, such as with an Xbox and the Xlink cable.  However, again, I'm looking to restore it to it's original state.

haha yeah!  I'd hook up 2 xboxes in this thing.  I believe *all* the xbox based x-port emulators support netplay, so you can get a nice multiplayer game of sonic and knuckles going lol.  More likely you'd be playing mk2, bomberman etc.  You could also bring some xbox controller ports out so you could plug those in and play halo 2 / crimson skies etc head to head.

Dont forget that one monitor is down below and is projected onto a mirror.  So you would have to wire out an inverted image on whatever secondary device you put in.  So yeah more trouble than its worth considering he simply wants to keep it as an 6 player X-men

I wouldn't think twice about MAMEing that beast. I am actually surprised that so many on a forum like this are against it. But I'm not for keeping things original just for the sake of it. If I had an old car I'd put a new more powerful engine in it and new tires and better suspension. Not keep it with inferior tires engine and poor handling. I would not want a cab with one game taking up a huge amount of space in my home. But that is just me.

MAME that sucker. Use one big TV for a monitor. Congrats on the find!

The idea is to preserve unique cabinets so the original look and feel of the game remains in-tact as it's creators intended it. Especially since over time they get rarer and rarer. I definitely respect the notion of preservation, but I'll leave that up to the museums  >:D

I'm 29 and come from a generation that grew up with Street Fighter II and look-a-like dynamo cabinets and conversions. I was socially trained not to give much attention to what the cabinet looked like... just what game was running on it. About the only cabinet I ever fell in love with as a kid were the showcase cabinets, and those were non-game specific. I also have been falling in love with candy cabs as an adult, and those are also non-game specific. It'll probably always be Mame for me.

...alright, alright I have to admit... if I ever restore any game it'd be a Dragon's Lair II cab.

Delusional, please keep us posted and share a picture or two of your new baby when you get it moved in!

My suggestion (pretty bad exposed also)  was only to play the game until it can be restored with the original replacement parts, to mame a generic/knokoff cabnet is Ok,  doing that  (in a way that doesn't allow you to revert back to the original status)  on a rare specimen like this one would be a crime against the preservation idea that is behind mame concept itself.

Dont forget that one monitor is down below and is projected onto a mirror.  So you would have to wire out an inverted image on whatever secondary device you put in.  So yeah more trouble than its worth considering he simply wants to keep it as an 6 player X-men
I actually looked into this... Yes, you would have to wire out an inverted image, since (for whatever reason) MAME does not invert the image.  (Select MAME games do... I could have sworn I saw the option somewhere, but I can't remember which game it was?).

OK,

Here are some photos.  I've only moved half of the cabinet in (the control panel).  I am going to pick up the rest of (the monitors in the second chunk) next week.  Although I did take a couple of pics of the monitors at the guys place (covered with tarp underneath a covered porch, so it was limited).

The control panel is so huge that when it opens up it requires a metal rod (just like a car) to hold it up.  The coin mechs are intact (Happ 3 player coin doors on each side).

The cabinet came apart in 3 chunks.  Control Panel, Monitors and the monitor on the back has a box which come off with bolts.

Edit: I also noticed that there was a painted piece of tape on the left side of the control panel.  I peeled off the tape and realized that they painted over the side art.  Probably not worth trying to save it, since they must have painted it for a reason.  Also on the front art, it looks as if there are 2 layers of the side art.  It was probably re-ordered and stuck over the original messed up art.

Pretty cool and very colossal, though I would have imagined the rear of the control panel box to have been solid to add strength and resist vandalism.

A lick of paint, some replacement artwork and a few switches here and there should see it back in a playable and presentable state.

I can't wait until the weather improves so that I can get started.  In the meantime, I need to get it to a playable state, as only the montiors turn on but the game does not fire up.  I'm guessing it's some loose wires/fuses somewhere or the PSU.  The PCB looks brand spanking new (it's very clean as seen in the pics), so I doubt it's defective.

But I feel I am doing a great service to the arcade community by restoring it.  :)  I would not have it any other way.

Wow, look at the size of that coffin, er control panel.

Great find and a great project.  I am sure you will do it justice.

I have a couple of questions, not really familiar with the game or the cabinet.  Why is one of the monitors mounted down below and projected onto a mirror?  I am sure there is plenty of room in there to have two monitors normally mounted.  Also with the two outside players I guess #1 and #6, are their joysticks mounted so that towards the monitor is up?  At such an extreme angle I would think that would be difficult.

I had thought the same thing, until I took another look at it in person and then it made sense.  If you were to have two monitors normally mounted, then you would see the borders of the monitors in between.  They would not be "seamless".  However, by mirroring one from the bottom (the one on the left is on the bottom facing up towards the mirror) and by having the monitor on the right normally mounted [it can be seen through a one way mirror (very high tech for it's time)], that allows the images to "overlap" when you look at it head on so that it appears as one wide image.  Problem solved.

I'm not quite sure about the joystick question, as it's been ages since I played this game in the arcades.  However, I would imagine that to move the character up, you would move the joystick towards the screen.  It seems the most natural.

Congrats on the purchase! The joysticks on the extreme ends of the control panel are still oriented with up being towards the monitor so yes it is a bit awkward when playing as Dazler or Cyclops, especially with 6 people playing. I'm glad to see that you plan to keep it original, but I'm almost always much more in favor of preservation, especially when a game is nearly complete or working. So do you get anything on the screen at all? The game normally boots up with a rom check, but if the screens are only showing raster, I would meter the power supply voltage to see if it's working or not. You can grab drop in replacements for about 50 bucks on eBay.

Edit: I can't resist sharing a picture of my 6 player X-Men. I got mine for 175 from a local arcade before they closed down. It was a nightmare to move it downstairs, but I think the stairway looks better with that opened up wall.  ;D

Update:  I tried the X-men PCB on my other Jamma machine and everything is working perfectly.  I could only see the right side of the screen, since it's the 6 player version, but I'm sure the left will work just fine once I get it all running.  So although I purchased it as "non-working", it looks like I got a good bargain.

I took the control panel apart yesterday and discovered that the joysticks are all in pretty bad shape.  They were Happ competitions and a few were shot and didn't move smoothly (one even had soda spilled into it which dried and I had to take a hammer to it to get it out of the base.)  So I will have to order some replacements for them.   The buttons were also mixed and matched (some leaf switches, some micro switches).  So I will probably replace those too.

As for the control panel, I'm still working with Scott at Mamemarquees.com who confirmed that he can print something that big!   :applaud:  I'm about halfway done with reproducing the artwork on the CPO.

Super Gun Guru, yours look nice and clean (by the way, where are you located?).  Did you buy it like that or did you re-do the decals on it.  Where did you obtain all of the decals if so?  Your CPO looks mint too.  Did you reproduce it yourself or order it?  On the manual it says you can order decals and it lists the part numbers so  I gave the guys at Konami a call and left a message.  Hopefully they will get back to me soon.  In the meantime though,  would you be willing to scan the characters on the CPO for me?  I have the rest of the CPO including the logos, X-men purple print and arrows for the buttons.  But my characters are in bad shape, although I scanned them to touch them up.  But yours are perfect...  Let me know.   :applaud:

I still have to pick up the rest of it (I only have the control panel part).  I should be able to pick it up early next week.  Can't wait!

One more thing...  Anyone know what joysticks this game uses?  They appear to be ball tops with various colors.  The closest I could find were the "Sanwa  LB-35 Joystick Ball Tops" at Lizardlick's website:  http://www.lizardlickamusements.com/pages/joysticks.shtml

But they require the "Sanwa  JLW-TM-8 Ball Handle Joystick, 4 & 8-Way Adjustable" joytick, which goes for about $20 each.  Yikes, that's $120 plus the cost of the colored ball top replacements.  However, I did see the "iL 8-Way Eurojoysticks" which come in 6 different colors which will do the trick.  They go for $10 each.  What do you guys think?  Any others out there?

I'm not really setup to scan the artwork on the cp, but would a closeup photo of each character help? Mine is completely original with no repro artwork on it. I can give it a try if so LMK.

If you lived close by I would not mind making a trip there with my scanner and laptop.   :P  But sure, any details would be great.  Perhaps a tripod can help?  I scanned my entire CPO by removing the lid of my flatbed scanner (it's USB with no power cord and super thin) and placing it upside down on my panel.  In a sense I turned it into a gigantic handheld scanner.  LOL.  I am still in the process of stitching it together.

Also, I am missing the marquee glass with the character abilities on it and the left side sticker above the coin door.  Pics of that would help too.  Use my first pic as a reference as to what I am missing.

Again, thanks for the help!

Sorry forgot to mention in my previous post I'm in Michigan. Anyway, I'll see what I can do in terms of borrowing a scanner or getting good pictures of the CP characters.

I wouldn't go with the JLW joysticks.  They are overkill for this game.  Any old 8-way joystick should work, as long as it can use the existing mounting holes.

Sets of joysticks and buttons are always on sale on ebay.  They are usually Chinese clones of Japanese parts.

and of course, that eternally underused place of miracles, the BST section.  Post up exactly what you need and I guarantee you will find the best deal available there, or at the analogous section of another videogame forum like shoryuken.com, shmups.com, arcadeotaku.com, or neo-geo.com

Well, I got the rest of it last night.  I had a friend with a pick-up truck help me out.  We removed the monitor from the back (was very easy with 6 bolts holding it in place) and the monitor was inside of a wooden box, so no dangerous parts were exposed.  I put the monitor in my SUV and he had the cabinet (laying on it's side) in his truck strapped down.

The move was relatively painless, since no stairs were involved (yet).  It's sitting in my garage, but I don't think it will fit into the side garage door into the game room, since it will not have enough "turn radius" to go in that way since it's so bulky.  But the good news is that it should fit through the front door (which has a few steps on the front stoop and then goes down into the basement via 5 or 6 steps down).  But plenty of room since it goes straight down without any turns.

I'll post pics once I take them of the rest of the unit.

P.S.  Can someone move this topic to the "Project Announcements" section?  Thanks in advance!

I think I finally found some nice joysticks that will match the originals:

I'm not too familiar with joystick sizes, but will these clear the 3/4" MDF?

Thanks in advance!

Delusional - what a find...congrats. If you're married please give us some advice on how you managed to convince your wife to bring that beast within 5 miles of your house. Seriously though, I'm subscribing to this thread, I'm eager to watch your progress.

One point I'll mention - I've heard nothing but BAD things about the $10 knock off joysticks from China. You've already got some projects under your belt here and know how expensive this hobby becomes (I'm well over $2K deep myself on the first build and we're not done yet) - opting for the cheaper sticks might save you $60-70...but you're going to be spending much more than that on artwork, buttons and other parts to make this thing look great.

Just my two cents - the Sanwa sticks are great and will hold up to lots of wear and tear that you and your buddies will give this thing :)

I dealt with Lizard Lick last year to get a bunch of parts - Chad is a great guy, has some really cool and hard to find products.

Yeah, I'm married... But here's how I did it:

I kind of broke it to her in stages.  First I told her that I was going to look at a cab, which I did.  Then she questioned where I was going to get the money for it.  That's where I whipped out the "secret stash" of money that I put aside for just such an occasion.  :)    I then proceeded to get rid of some junk that was cluttering up my game room such as a futon which we never really sat on or used in the room.

But most importantly, I ended up bringing it home in "chunks".  I think if I brought it home in one shot she would have freaked.  But when she saw the panel and noted that it wasn't so bad she didn't really say anything.  That's when i said, "You should see the whole thing... it's a monster".  A week later, I got the rest of it (the monitor portion is still in the garage).  She saw the rest of it and just shook her head and rolled her eyes and chuckled, but didn't complain.  True love!

I'm guessing once I move it in the game room she will realize how much room it takes up, but it will be too late.   ;D

Honestly though, she probably secretly thinks that I am just going to fix it up and then re-sell it.

Haha - hilarious, and your approach is noted for my own personal use in the future. My build-in-progress cabinet is up in my friend's shop and will be eventually migrating to my basement. It's no 6 person cab, but it's a still pretty big - we've had one "discussion" on it thus far, and I think I'm in the clear. The second and third cabinets that I buy/build though...

So, it's been a while, but I've finally returned to this project, now that the weather it nicer outside.  (I live in New York).  The main reason I waited until nicer weather:  The other "chunk" of the cab is in the garage since I attempted to move it into the house and it did not fit.   D'oh!  :hissy:  So I had to wait until it got warmer out in order to work on it in the garage.

In the meantime though, I have been working on the graphics portion.  I've managed to reproduce the control panel overlay in photoshop and I'm about 80% done with that.  I've been working with Scott at Mamemarquees.com who was very generous in helping me obtain the 4 player artwork so that I could convert it.

Great news for fellow 6 player X-men cab owners:  Once I finish the design, Scott at Mamemarquees.com is going to offer it in his store for printing.  :-)  It will actually be an improvement over the original, since it will be laminated with the "ultra" finish that he offers.  Very durable.

I'm hoping to finish up the CPO artwork this weekend.  Then while I wait for it, I can work on re-connecting the PCB board and wiring.  Again, the machine didn't work when I first bought it, but I stuck the PCB in my other Jamma machine and it worked great.  So I'm hoping it's just a matter of wiring.

Stay tuned!

I'm having a hard time vectorizing the characters on the control panel.  Is anyone out there good at this and willing to do it for free?  It would make a great addition to the artwork archives for the community.  I can supply hi-res scans of the characters on the control panel.

Thanks in advance!

If no one else volunteers, I would be happy to take a look at it. I feel certain that there are many members here that are more talented than I (You might consider posting this request in the artwork section); however, I might be able to do it.

Without being able to see how detailed the characters are, I can't guarantee anything, but I would love to try.

Yeah, this started out as a pretty sad thread with all the people wanting to mame this cab.  Looks like it would be a blast to play 6 player.  Keep up the good work on restoring this one.

Yep, looks like those are the ones.  I noticed that Quarterarcade.com carries some used ones, but they don't have all the colors.  Anyone know where else I can find them?

I'm just seeing this thread for the first time.  Anyway, if you go with 8-way wicos, Wu over at forums.arcade-museum.com has a whole bunch of NOS wico sticks.  He may have the colors you are looking for.  He also sells the sticks all the time on ebay.

Good luck.  I'm glad to hear you are restoring this beast.

Hey DeLuSioNal29,

I just picked this up at the Dallas Super Auction.  The art is in a terrible state.  The CPO is nice, but the side and front graphics need to be replaced.  How the art project coming along?  I'd definitely be interested in a set, once you get it done!  I sill have quite a bit of work to get it running.  It looks like a rat made a nest in the rear monitor box.  It's gonna need some serious clean up.  Rat ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- everywhere!!!! :banghead:

A quick update:  I'm still working on the control panel artwork.  Flip_Willie has been doing some amazing vectorization of the characters.  I'm currently working on Cyclops but I'm at a standstill.  I just realized his face is missing from my original scan of my CPO.   ???

Can someone out there take a pic of their Cyclops character and post it here?  I just need a reference to build it manually in Photoshop.

And as for other owners of the 6-players version of X-men, once all of my artwork is done I plan on donating it to mamemarquees.com.  So it will be available for printing.   :applaud:

Btw, DeLuSioNal, is there any way you(or anyone with a 6 player cab) could snap a few pics of the bottom of the cab?  Preferably of the isolation transformers, ground straps, and where the straps connect.  I had to take everything out and clean and paint the inside.  It was pretty hacked up down there, too.  I know where most of it goes, but not all of it.  It would be nice to get it as close to original as possible.  I'd appreciate it!!

Thanks for the help warmeister.  Still a ways for me to go but that helps tremendously.

Anyone else up for helping out with the vectorization?  Colossus in particular is proving challenging, since he is very detailed.  Any help would be great.  Flip_Willie has been a great help and has vectorized, Dazzler, Storm and Wolverine so far.  He should be starting Nightcrawler soon.  I'm still working on Cyclops, but I'm an amateur at this so it is taking longer than expected.

The background (X-men logos) took a while, but it's now perfect, along with the 6 player instructions on either end.  The huge yellow X-men logo is also done.

Once the characters are done, I'll need to work on the "Attack", "Mutant Power" and "Jump" stuff.  I actually have them in high res, so I don't need to vectorize them.  However, I'm not sure if I should include these on the CPO design itself, or if I should get them as separate stickers to be placed afterwards.  I'm nervous about not lining them up properly if they are printed on the CPO.  Thoughts?

And Warmmeister, your setup is probably better than mine.  There are unconnected wires everywhere, as I bought it in a "non-working" state.  Although I tested the board and it works (along with the monitors) everything is in shambles and I'll have to refer to the manual when I assemble it.  I have the original manual if you need it.  I can always scan it in.

Also, I have NO bezel at the moment.  So I don't even have a reference for those graphics, AT ALL.  Anyone?

edit:  I meant to type in bezel, not marquee above.

Sorry for disappearing, but I am still working on the project -- I have just been a little busier lately.

I have started working on NightCrawler. I have made decent progress, but it still needs more work.

EDIT: I'll go ahead and upload what I have so far of everything so that people can take a look. As far as I am concerned, all of it is still a work in progress. Specifically, Wolverine and Nightcrawler need work.

Funny that you mention this.  I was planning to post here shortly that I was reviving the project.  This summer has proven to be very busy.  Between tending to my 1 year old son and other family issues (death in the family)... it has been a whirlwind!  Also, I had a couple other projects that sidetracked me a bit.  (Total Carnage/Smash TV combo restoration and Pong restoration).  However, I now have some time on my hands to work on this again.

However, I have not heard from anyone who was helping out with the graphics of the characters.  That's crucial at this point, as the CPO cannot be completed without them.  Any new volunteers?  I can use all the help that I can get.

Sorry to hear about your family situation.  I've been busy, too.  No time to put into my X-Men restoration either.  There aren't any traces of rats in the cab, thankfully.  I cleaned it out w/ bleach, painted it w/ Kilz, and spray painted over it.  It smells like paint, instead of poo!  I just have to put it all back together now.  I'd help you out w/ the vector stuff, but I don't know the first thing about it.  Couldn't it be scanned it sections, touched up w/ Photoshop, then pasted back together?  Granted, you have a couple of good scans to pull from?  My cpo is in pretty good shape, but it might be a little faded.  I'll have to ask my graphic designer friend and see what he says.  On the OT side....you're doing a S.T.V & T.C. resto?  Sweeeeet!  I have dedicated Smash cab in great condition and a T.C. board I put inide of it.  How do you have it hooked up?  Just swapping the pcbs?

I'll have to hit you up on pics of your cab wiring once I reassemble mine.  It was in shambles when I got it with cut wires everywhere.

As for the Total Carnage/SmashTV conversion, I don't want to hijack this thread, so you can read about it in a separate topic here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=95663.0

Everything inside hadn't been disturbed.  It was complete, with no hacks.  The only problems were severed wires going to the monitor adjustment boards, disconnected molex plugs,  and of course the rats nest inside.  The monitors didn't have any picture, but they should work when they're hooked up.  I made some notes regarding the wiring placement and even tagged the ends of the ground straps and such for reassembly.  It shouldn't be too hard, considering all of the main electronics and connections are in the control panel box.  I haven't even started on that yet.  It wasn't in that bad of shape.  So I'll probably just clean it out really well.  I'm going to get around to finishing the project, when it isn't over 105* outside.  I hate sweating and working on arcade games.

Let me know how the progress goes.

Also, I've managed to scan the entire side panel on the control panel if anyone is interested in piecing it together.  It was in pretty good shape when I scanned it.

I, too, just picked up a 6-player. Artwork is in really sad shape, but it's supposed to be working. I'll get some pictures of the wiring once I get it back together.

Good to see some JAMMA classics like X-Men getting some love from collectors. I think DeLuSioNal29 has a manual already, but for those that may not, I took some time to scan my manual last night since I don't think anybody has scanned the 6 player or maybe even 4 player manual yet. Enjoy. :)

Edit: I've also submitted this to arcarc.xmission.com so hopefully more people will benefit from it hopefully being on a better site.

Wow I didn't expect arcarc to update that fast, but here we go:

Hey, nice job on the instruction manual scan!

I had put it on my "to do list" since I have the original as well, but now it's one less thing I have to do.  :)

One other note...  The phone numbers in the manual are all outdated.  I've tried calling for parts.  Betson Enterprises has taken over for Konami.  So if you need any parts you can get them there.  However, they don't really have parts for the 6 player version (I tried).   ???

However, that said, I have some really good scans of stuff and I'm sure with a collaborative effort, we can create some nice overlays for the arcade community to benefit from.  Scott at Mamemarquees.com is on board to add whatever is created to his store for purchasing re-prints from.

So who wants to get started?  I can upload images of what I have done so far if needed.

Hey all, I just had the good fortune of picking up one of these 6 player cabs myself. I pick it up, fortunately across town, in about 2 weeks. I am wondering if anyone would be willing to post 1) dimensions of the assembled cabinet as assembled, and 2) be willing to measure the individual sections. I am basically wondering if this thing will make it into my basement in 2 or 3 pieces (I'll yank the monitors before attempting that), or If an I am going to be ripping the thing into hundreds of pieces to get it down there. Also wondering if anyone has a guess on the weight. My guess is 450-500 assembled, but I have no basis for that aside from looking at specs for cabs half the size.

I am also curious as to how to transport the thing, not sure if it will fit in my mini-van or if I am better off renting a truck from home depot or something for $20. obviously dimensions will help me figure that out.

I also know the unit is getting some audio buzz, seller is wife's friend, so she's rather honest on the condition. I read that is typically the 5v connector though.

Good to hear it.  I already know a few people who own it and we're all teaming together to get the artwork done.  Let me know what shape your artwork is when you get it.  You may be able to scan something that we don't have.

As for the dimensions... I just measured it and here they are:

Base (houses the left side monitor that is mounted facing up and power supply
Height:  79"
Width:  50"
Depth:  29"

Control Panel (houses the joysticks, PCB and coin doors)
Height:  41"
Width:  48"
Depth:  27"

Monitor Box (houses the right side monitor which faces forward).
Height:  23"
Width:  26"
Depth:  20"

It may even weigh more than that assembled.  But 450 - 550 is good rough estimation.

I highly doubt it will fit in your basement unless you have a walk in.  The angles going down stairs are tough.  Also, you'll probably have to remove the door to get it through most doorways.  My machine is sitting in my garage.  It would not fit in my basement (walk in from garage) due to the tight turn.

As for the transport.  I was able to fit the control panel in my truck (hatchback so it slid right in).  And the monitor also fit too (on a separate trip).  My buddy came with me the second time with a pickup truck and we put the base part of the unit on there and strapped it down.  There was NO way it would fit in my SUV.  A minivan?  Nope.

DeLuSioNaL

By the way, the audio buzzing sounds like a grounding issue.

We went for the up-sale and are getting track & field and vanguard as well, so I might as well rent a truck. Thanks for the insanely detailed information, and quickly at that! I registered on this forum just because of your post. I guess John was out of town for like a week, so I was having a really hard time waiting for the authorization :)

I will post some pics once I get the unit. I saw a video from like 5 feet away and the thing looks like it was used very gently. Be glad to contribute to the artwork/restoration collection.

fortunately, I recently stripped my basement down to the studs, so one entire side of the stairway is completely opened up. The largest doorway I have is 36 and the smallest is 32. Perhaps I am being overly optimistic, but with the dimensions you posted, I think it will fit. Guess I am never moving it it does.

It should barely squeak through as long as you don't have any turns.  Just keep in mind that this thing has a humongous footprint once you get it in!  It's not only 50" wide, but when assembled it's 76" deep!  That's over 6 feet away from the wall when standing in front of it!

I bought mine for $200 non-working (I test the PCB on another Jamma unit and it works fine, so it's probably wiring).  I'm curious what you got yours for?

We need the 6 characters completed.  We had attempted to vectorize them, but that came to a screeching halt and my volunteers never finished.  However, I have met someone who has been able to scan his control panel with much better results, as his characters were in better shape.  We may be able to Photoshop them instead of Vectorizing them.  I consider myself an expert with Photoshop so that' probably the route I will take, since I can't Vectorize to save my left (yet).

However, If someone can attempt to vectorize them, that may also be best.  Not sure yet.

I have attached the newly acquired scans of the 6 characters to this post.

Once I get the characters in there, I have to scale them, and then measure where the holes would go.  (I have the CPO plans thanks to Jakobud who happened to have the plans for the 6 player X-men cabinet).  So measuring should be a snap.

I already have the background all done (it's perfectly aligned - it took a while).  And the instructions have been finished as well.  I have the graphics for the attack, jump and mutant powers, but I need to measure where those go.

I've also attached what I've done so far with the CPO.  It may not look like a lot but tons of hours have been placed on getting the background perfect.

Hey,

Well, I am certainly sorry, I didn't mean to just cut out on you. The last email I got from you put me under the impression that you found someone to finish vectorizing the last two characters -- primarily Colossus which I didn't think I could do. I admit, I did get kind of sidetracked over the summer with school and other stuff. Anyway, I am sorry for that -- I guess I just sort of fell out of the loop.

It is too bad that the vectorization project fell apart. Back then, I felt like Colossus was the only real obstacle to finishing the CPO art. I mean, only Colossus and Cyclops were left, and Cyclops really didn't look to be that much of a hassle. I just don't think I have enough experience or talent to work on Colossus. I am surprised out of the many talented artists on this board that none of them wanted to take on Colossus.

I am still interested in the project. I feel certain I could vectorize Cyclops; however, I won't lie. I have a very intense semester ahead of me, and I would certainly put school before any of the work I did here. So progress would be unpredictable and slow. Additionally, the bigger task would still be getting someone to work on Colossus. If no one else is able to do that, then it probably isn't worth the effort to finish vectorizing Cyclops.

On another note, it looks like you are making pretty good headway on cleaning up the original art in photoshop. Personally, I think it should either be all vector or all photoshop. Mixing might not look the best. It is your project, so you can decide what you feel is the best.

Once again, I am sorry for not coming through with the vector art.

Just for clarification, this is everything I had finished. I guess it could be of help to you. I made the background art pretty quickly, so it still needs a bit of work. Also, I didn't work on getting it to scale.

Willie again you did a fantastic job!! Lets see which way DeLuSioNaL wants to go from here.

Speaking see how cyclops is more clear thats because i did that one with the clear cover off. The only problem with that is it took all the white with it!!!.

Hey gang, don't get my cab for another week, but had some more simple questions.

1) Which controllers (position wise) are the ones wired into the jamma harness as opposed to wired directly into the board? Wondering if the option of sticking another board in there is an option. I realize it should technically work, but it would suck if P1 is the far left controller, even though that makes the most sense logically. Don't worry, I won't murder the cab, I want this thing for xmen, but thinking it might be fun to have another game or two to slap in there.

2) Looks like the primary monitor connects to the jamma interface and the secondary plugs into an RGB port on the board? Just curious how it all connects.

You are correct on #2. I can't vouch for #1 yet, it will be a short while before I can get to the machine again.

Got it going, everything but the sound. Wiring was hacked up quite a bit, don't know how much of a help it will be to everyone.

The two controllers on the far left are wired into the JAMMA harness as players one and two so yes it would be a bit of a pain playing other boards in some way. The right side monitor which hangs off the back receives its video signal from the JAMMA harness. The left side monitor connects to that small 4 pin connector on the pcb.

Picking my cab up tomorrow. After looking at DeLuSioNal29's dimensions, there is no way I can get the base into my basement in one piece, which leads to an unpleasant question. Could the base be separated? I am not sure if it is glued/expoxied/screwed/cammed together.

Obviously disassembly would take a long time, but I don't think I am moving for a few years, so I am OK with dumping some time into it so long as I don't kill the cabinet. I feat some of you are going to tell me that the artwork is overlayed on top of fasteners, or that there's a welded frame, etc. If that's the case, I guess it is time turn the 3 season room into a 4 season room :)

Got my cab, it unfortunately lives in my garage right now. I am not sure if it is good news or bad news, but someone previously disassembled the cab and put it back together and threw in a few wood screws here and there. The artwork on the sides now has some screw holes in it and is a bit beat up. All of the characters on the CP seem to be in good shape, save Wolverine. I will try to get some pics in the near future.

I found this graphic of Colossus on the web.  It's at 75 dpi and measures 371 x 325 pixels (4.947 in. x 4.333 in.)

Do you guys think that's sharp enough for the final product, since it's only a small element of the entire panel?

Thoughts?

Scott at Mamemarquees recommends using 200-300 DPI for the final piece. If you already have your final artwork at that DPI, then just place this file into it and see what it looks like. I don't think you would want to stretch it.

Well, I'm glad that this project is getting revived again.  I've been busy with other projects, but now that the weather is starting to get colder, it's time to go back indoors to work on artwork.    :applaud:

I have to say that I'm really pleased that there a lot more people that own this beast.  If we work together we can finally get this reproduction finished and everyone can benefit.

All of you guys have done a great job with the vectorization.  I am passing on Flip Willie's work to Necroticart so that he can touch them up with greater detail.  He also plans to work Colossus as well.  (That's a tough one with more detail to worry about).  Again, a big thanks goes out to Flip Willie for starting up the vectorization and for Necroticart for finishing them up.

Thanks to all and I can't wait to have this completed!

i have one of these nice big 6 player machines in my collection that is all original execpt for the powersupply.
Hey Wolfie,

Just for the heck of it:  Would you be able to scan all 6 characters on your CPO?  I'd like to also experiment with Photoshop to see which looks better, vectorization or raster graphics.  The background is has all been rasterized on my end of things and the characters may help.

Also, scans of the character coin decals and Marquee would be great!

Wow, that is amazing work! I am very glad you decided to take this up - you are doing an excellent job.

As Delusional mentioned, I started work on the characters about 6 months ago and got Dazzler, Nightcrawler, Strom, and Wolverine to an acceptable state. I hope you will be able to incorporate them into the final piece; however, as you are obviously a very talented artist, I will not be offended with whatever you decide to do. ;)

The photo below shows everything I have done up to this point, and I would be more than happy to send any of it, if you require it. I vectorized everything in the image. For the background, I had to import my vector work into Photoshop to get it to tile seamlessly. The scaling may be off on the tiling.

EDIT: I now realize that I put a gradient on the Xmen logo (Which isn't quite how it looks in the original artwork), but that could be easily changed back to the solid gold one. Also, I didn't work to get everything to scale in this image.

Anyway, if there is anything I can help with, I would be more than happy to do so.

Thanks for picking up the project again!

Hey FlipWillie,

Can you send me that .ai file of the background and logo.  I can't remember if you sent it to me already.  I'd like to take a look at it.  I created one in Photoshop that is perfectly lined up and looks great.  I could always use a program like VectorMagic to convert it.

Actually, I had to use Photoshop to get the background image to tile right. I vectored the background in illustrator and made that into a tile-able pattern in photoshop.

It has been a while since I looked at that artwork file, so I may have to sort some stuff out. As soon as I can, I will send it to you. What I will probably try to do is send you a Photoshop file with everything in a separate layer (i.e., characters, logo, and background are all separate layers).

@DeLuSioNal29  and @Necroticart

Here is the illustrator file for what I have done on the background.

I was able to make the main background tile-able, but upon close inspection, you can tell that it isn't correct. I wasn't able to get illustrator to line up the pattern correctly. (That is why I had to use photoshop). I am sure it can be done, but I wasn't able to get it smooth.

Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, a bit too huge to post.  Something like 700+mb.  I guess I won't be posting.  However, I can see if I can vectorize the background using Vector Magic.  We'll see how it goes.

thanks Necroticart

unfortunately its missing the rear view and box blueprints (sucks)

thanks for the tip I have been there before for my dk cab dimensions and lost the link

I notice in the picture posted here there are wood stoppers on the box could really use info on where the stoppers are located and where the 3 holes are top and bottom for mounting to l brackets

also if the dimensions listed are outer or inner?  I take it box is made out of 3/4 plywood

making the box is simple but finding the info is nutty

Does anyone know what one would call the CP connectors, I want to say they are 8 pins. Nobody ever wants to play storm, everyone wants to play cyclops and that position sucks. I want to rearrange the wiring for the CPs. Could wire this manually, but I want to use intermediary quick connects to preserve it.

Monitor Box (houses the right side monitor which faces forward).
Height:  23"
Width:  26"
Depth:  20"

built box to this spec and well it was abotu an inch to large on both sides
had to pull back apart not an easy task when you build liek me and cut 1 in height and 1 " width off to fit xmen cab
and still so tight i had to beat it in

not sure if your cab has a bigger hole but the one im workign on did not

if you can answer a few questions it would be nice

I made the box and after cutting it down it fits real tight
but i have no clue how the inside is set up how monitor mounts in box

installing a k7000 into the cab that was not from this game other facing up montor is a k7000 if there are special mounts i do not have them. I know the wires are no where near long enough to make it to the back of the monitor box so ill need to make patch cables, k7000 duaghter board wires reach but the power does not and the sync cable has a wierd type molex i guess and i do not have a plug to match it still looking.

i take it the stoppers on the sides stop it flush with the inside ??? assuming
also what type bolts hold box in lags i would guess simular to the ones holding brackets to cab assumtion once agian

Once again, I'm reviving this project.  I'd like to get something done by this Spring if possible.  :)  We're so close to completion.

Necroticart, any news on the Wolverine graphic?

I'm going to start working on integrating all of the graphics that I have so far in Photoshop. to come up with a preview to post here.

Also, anyone have any scans of the bezel artwork or coin door graphics?  I'm working on getting the marquee scanned.  My marquee is broken in certain parts, but I'm pretty confident I can restore it in Photoshop.

Here's a thread about someone who is attempting to reproduce the "bio card" that goes on the lower bezel area.  It looks promising.  Good work on your restore, mine just needs this card and a cap kit for the right monitor.

Well as far as wolverine goes I should have him up by the end of the week. I would have had this done along time ago but I needed to do some major home improvement projects for example the kitchen. I also have been able to vector the background of the CPO while it's not 100% accurate it's close.

Necro...  No need for apology.  :)  We are all very grateful to you for your help!

I myself have been swamped with arcade projects, home improvement (it never ends), work projects, a 17 month old and the moderation of the Maximus Arcade forum.  So I understand completely.  :)

I've also asked some of the guys over at the KLOV forums (topic listed above) for some help.  I am still awaiting a response.  I've also e-mailed Eric over at Vector Zorg http://vectorlib.free.fr/ Hopefully a nice team effort can be made to get this done.

Thanks again!

Just to recap so far:

-  Background is done (purple X-men).  This is in Raster format which should be fine.  It looks perfect
-  Colossus done (.ai file received)
-  Cyclops done (.ai file received)
-  Wolverine done (.ai file received)

Interestingly, it looks like the arcade Ground Kontrol just restored a 6 player X-men cabinet.

They say that they used customized artwork. The control panel artwork is different; however, it looks like the individual characters are still on the control panel.

Looks pretty sweet overall. Although, I can't say I approve of the cup holders on the control panel.  ;)

Their control panel turned out pretty nice (but I'd still go original)

Definitely turned out nice the sentinels are a nice touch since you fight them about 90% of the time but I have to agree the original is still the best.

well anyway on to the good news Nightcrawler is finished here is a preview pic enjoy

I'm all for originality...but that new CPO rocks the house.  If I had one, I'd def. use the new one.

I agree completely.  I'd be compelled to keep it authentic too, but the new one looks great.  The old one wasn't bad, but something about that X-Men logo tiled a million times over is mildly annoying.

Update:  I'm working on the conversion of the .ai vectorized files of the characters into Photoshop format.  So far they are converting nicely.  I am color correcting them as needed.  I should have a sample rough draft graphic with mostly everything integrated by the end of the week.

In the meantime, Necroticart is working on the Attack, Jump and Mutant Power arrows for the CPO.  I also have access to some marquee scans as well that can be vectorized if needed.  (And the character scans above the coin doors if I recall, but I'll have to check).

Cool!  Let me know if you need the artwork for the card.  Scott over at Mamemarquees.com was gracious enough to supply me with his 4 player X-men repro artwork, which is in perfect condition.  The 4 player card is an exact duplicate of the 6 player card but with a couple of minor changes in wording.  I have already made those changes. (see attached) pic.  You can use this image for vectorization.  However, it does already look quite good as is.

Thanks.  I received the .ai file.  However, you'll still need to vectorize the arrow on the lower right.  It's a different "attack" graphic.

Have you heard of any progress being made on the reproduction of the bezel bio card?

I'm not feelin' the redesigned control panel overlay they used.

So I've color corrected Wolverine.  It was a major hassle to correct it in Illustrator, so I did it in Photoshop.

See sample below.  Much better in my opinion.  Now onto the other characters.

Old coloring vs. New pictured below.

P.S. - The .jpg compression makes the skin looker pinker than it really is.  But the original HQ .psd file looks awesome.

Front Art (of control panel) is done.  Side art (of control panel) has been scanned and I have to get those to Necroticart for vectorization.

At this time there are no plans to reproduce the rest of the side art.  Unless someone volunteers to scan them.

I'm re-asembling and almost done.  I've got some extra ground straps that weren't connected andsome loose wire.  Not exactly sure of their placement.  Could someone take some pics of the inside of their cab?  I'd like to see where the straps are anchored, just to get it as close to original as possible.  The bottom and insides of the cab, the monitor, and a shot or two underneath the cp would be great.  Thanks!

OK, time to revive this project once again!   :applaud:

I'm working on placing all the graphics, but I have to admit, I'm no expert.  My biggest fear is that I measure, place them all and then when it prints things won't line up.  I've included a sample of the "before" and "after" below.

So I need the following:
-  Someone who's an expert at repro artwork who can guide me to measuring and scaling, etc.
-  I need a couple of things vectorized.  I'm missing the "Attack" arrows which are not as curved for Cyclops, Colossus, Wolverine and Storm. They all use the same arrow design so only one needs vectorization.  I also need the purple text below the X-men logo vectorized.
-  Konami logo above the X-men logo.  I may have this somewhere, if not I may have a buddy who saved it before the arwork site went down.  Anyone else have it?

Thanks in advance!

A while back I had scanned the sideart of the control panel.  I finally got around to piecing it together so that it can be vectorized.  However, I'm missing a sliver on the right side so I'll need to rescan those parts.

In the meantime, I have passed this along to Necroticart so that he can begin vectorization of the graphic.  Necro... don't use the version I have attached here, I have e-mailed you a higher resolution version.

A local skate rink was going to tear it apart and dumpster it, so I thought I'd save it from peril. Thanks to this thread, it was cake to take it apart...and I found out it fits in a 6ft dakota bed. :3

Figured I'd revive this thread, now that I can work on it a bit more again due to the cold weather outside (I live in NY).

I'm still looking for someone to help me with placing the graphics?  I have all of the elements that I need.  I must admit I'm horrible with scaling stuff.  It would be a shame to have it printed and then it not fit the panel.  Any volunteers?

PM me if interested.

Does anyone know what make/model the coin mechs are? They are the only things missing off my machine from what I can tell.
I'd have to look but I'm pretty sure they're HAPP.

Here is a preview of the finished vector for the CP Sideart

Yep, looks great.  I'm glad my scans were adequate for the vectorization.  I'll double-check the measurements later this week.

The guy I just bought my cab from is also selling a mint condition xmen 6 player cab for $50. If anyone is interested, I'm sure he would part out some of the art like the ID cards.

Does anyone know how the Ground Kontrol guys managed to wire up their X-man refurb to a 42" LCD TV Monitor?  I know it's not too difficult to take 2 LCDs and replace the two arcade monitors, but how do you replace 2 monitors with 1 LCD and still have it all look seamless on the screen?

Ok I think I answered my own question after a bit more research.  It looks like several LCD tvs let you watch "side-by-side" inputs on the TV.  I assume they just wired up each output through a video converter and then into the LCD tv and they're using the side-by-side feature to display both screens.  Cool!

I don't know if the 6 player Xmen board is any different from a 4 player (or single monitor) Xmen board, but if it's the same it might just be a dipswitch or system setting for dual monitor/6 player mode and a spare connector for the other monitor on the board.

It's an entirely different PCB board.

I ran across this site the other night while looking for X-Men 6 Player arcade art.  I am building a small computer case that looks just like the X-Men 6 Player arcade.  I was needing the graphics for it.  I don't have to have them huge, because the size of the my custom case is very small compared to the full size arcade.  I was wondering if I could get a copy of your graphics for my project.  Also, I am pretty good with Photoshop and Illustrator.  I am using CS5.  I do web design and other projects that require it.  If you need some stuff finished up, I would be glad to see what I could do.  It is great to see so many restorations.  I have a Sega Super GT Arcade Machine.  Talk about a monster to move around!

I have an X-Men 6 Player unit that I need to move ... about to add several pieces to my arcade and need the space.  The unit was working when we unplugged it to move to an area outside the arcade.  It has lots of wear from years of play but I see that you guys are kicking out some incredible graphics to restore your games.

Wish I could keep it and do a restoration but need the space ...

If you're interested please respond.  I am in the Nashville, TN area.  SkateWest@aol.com

Hello all, I am new here, and I just got a 6 player X-men cabinet.  It works great, but it has some damage to the graphics around the joysticks.  I ran into this thread and was wondering if the Graphics you all were working on ever got finished, if not then I was also wondering if I could get someone to send me some copies of the files, so that I could work on it?  Any information would be great.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is this project really dead?  If it is, Necroticart, could you send me the work you've done so far (pm me and we'll come up with a way to transfer the files)?  I would like to upload it to public ftp in order for someone else to use it.  It would be a shame if all this work just died...

Not in the least!  It's just been on Hatius for a while due to...  Life.   :-\  I actually planned on donating the COMPLETED files over to mamemarquees.com so that they'd be available to order in the future.  I worked out a deal with them there.  I need to touch base with him again since I no longer own the cabinet.  That said.  I know a guy who still does own it and I'm still dedicated to completing this project (with the help of other community members of course).

Since it's been quite a while since I've worked on it, I re-read this entire thread and took notes on what has been completed and what still needs to be done.  I'd like to officially revive the project and would welcome any help that people can give me.  I have all the required files backed up safely.

Completed so far:
1)X-men background expanded and stitched together based on 4-player background – Completed.
2)Vectorization of all 6 characters – Completed.
3)Vectorization of “Jump”, “Attack” and “Mutant Power” graphics – Completed.
4)Vectorization of yellow X-Men logo – Completed.
5)Vectorization of “Konami” logo – Completed.
6)Vectorization of Instruction Cards (same graphic x2) – Completed.
7)Front kick plate graphic – Completed. (Needs dimensions verified)
8 )Left/Right side control panel graphic (same graphic both sides) – Completed. (Needs to be sized)
9)Bezel character bio graphics – WIP (Needs to be pieced together with background)
     a.Cyclops – Completed.
     b.Colossus – Completed.
     c.Wolverine – Completed.
     d.Storm – Completed.
     e.Nightcrawler – Completed.
     f.Dazzler – Completed.

Things still needed:
1)Coin Door Character arrows (3 characters on each side)
     a.Scan needed
     b.Vectorization needed.
2)Measurement of where everything goes on the control panel.  I need it to be accurate so that when it’s printed it fits perfectly over the original control panel with all the holes lining up.
3)Measurement of where everything goes on the Bezel character sticker.
4)Marquee scan (vectorized?)  Thought I saw it on e-bay as a reproduction that a guy can easily print.

In summary:  Times have changed.  My upgraded 8 core graphics workstation computer runs a heck of a lot faster making it a lot more fun to work with these huge Photoshop files.  It slices through them like butter now.   :applaud:
We  also have a lot more interest due to more people needing the artwork.  It was tough in the past to get people to contribute.  Hopefully we can all work together to complete this project so that the community can benefit.

So... any volunteers?

Just picked one of these up yesterday: http://imgur.com/a/NMd3K  First cabinet in my future personal arcade. Already starting planning the restoration process.

So I'm very interested in helping the project along in any way I can. Not experienced in vectoring graphics, but I can provide detailed photos and measurements that are still needed. As you can see from the photos, the graphics are not in the best of shape but it's all there. I also have an original manual and some details schematics of the control panel I can pass along. I'm PM'ing DeLuSioNal29 hoping we can finally get this project moving again.

Ok I think I answered my own question after a bit more research.  It looks like several LCD tvs let you watch "side-by-side" inputs on the TV.  I assume they just wired up each output through a video converter and then into the LCD tv and they're using the side-by-side feature to display both screens.  Cool!

Half right. I found a set that does PIP side by side, hoping to do something really cool with the 6 player I'm in the middle of rebuilding/restoring. However, the video for the left screen (the one that's mounted facing up through that mirrored pane) has it's signal mirrored coming from the PCB.  :banghead: Doh! Was hoping it was mirrored at the tube and not the board.

Can't see a way of making it work without some device between the PCB and LCD that will flip the video signal horizontally. Does anyone know of any CGA-VGA converters that does this? Or maybe any other solution that doesn't cost 300+ bucks like some of the video converters I've seen online???

Also, I have taken some high-res shots of the graphics on my 6 player if anyone is interested in keeping this project going. Please PM me so I can setup some kind of share for the pics. I also have a marquee and hopefully soon new front artwork for the control console that can be scanned for anyone interested in working with me on this.

Alright, I'm reigniting this thread. I got all of Delusional's assets and I'm working on new ones I did a scan of my marquee last night and here's where I am on vectorizing it. I'm using a Surface Pro 2 touchscreen/stylus. It makes removing the backgrounds not too hard at all. Hopefully I can have the marquee finished in a few days.

Marquee update:
I spent some more time last night taking the marquee image apart and vectrizing it. I finished getting all the characters. I've started adding color, but I need to get my palette finalized (all of the graphics use the same colors).

I'm not an Illustrator pro, so I'm doing most of my work in photoshop, and then moving it over to Illustrator to vectorize the images.

Here's some pictures for you.

Got Cyclops and Dazzler colored last night. Started on Storm but not finished yet.

Finished the rest of the characters. I just need to vectorize the background and the logos with the right colors and the marquee will be done.

No update on the artwork right now. Instead I spent my weekend getting the game fully assembled and running :)

You should already have the completed background in .PSD format in the Dropbox folder I shared.  (The X-men lettering on the purple background).  The original artwork came from Scott Prior from GameonGrafix.com who was gracious enough to supply me with the pristine 4-player graphic files that he uses to print.  I isolated the background and expanded it for the CPO, etc.  You should be good to go using those, I don't think you need to vectorize it.

You should also have the Konami logo vectorized (.ai).  It's in there!  Let me know if you can't find it.

I saw those, I'll definitely use the logos, but I still think I want to vectorize the background. It will make the lines and the colors look a lot cleaner.

After some more work on the marquee last night, I determined that I do in fact need to redo the logo and vectorize the background. When I magnified the background to be the right size, it looked very pixelated.

Update on the marquee:
I spent some time tonight putting together the background texture for all of the art. It might need a little tweaking, but here it is with what I have done of the marquee.

I finished working on the marquee tonight. Here's what it looks like.

Here's my scan of the original for reference.

My next project is going to be tackling the CPO.

I'm alive, things have just been slow while I've been on vacation. I'm waiting on a getting a high-res (900 dpi) scan of the characters on the CPO. I'm not a big fan of how a few of them were auto-vectorized, and I would like to redo them. I'm doing my best to keep as many of the fine details as possible.

UPDATE!!!

I'm still waiting on high-res scans of the CPO characters, so I moved on to the bezel. I re-scanned, traced, and colored most of the characters. I'm having a real ---smurfette--- of a time getting a perfectly straight scan because I'm using a wand scanner. It doesn't really matter for the art, but it's a big problem with text. I'm trying to figure out the font of the character cards so I can just reproduce the test rather than vectorize it.

Here is what I have done so far.
(Dazzler's text is vectorized original text)

I know that you are going for accuracy, but if you get it close enough, I doubt that anyone would care if you used Calibri instead of vectorizing the original and using that.

I was able to get my hands on a flat scanner, so I'll be able to re-scan the bezel art and get the text looking nice and pretty.

The character files that I supplied to you for the CPO were not auto vectorized. They were done by hand. Do you have the right files?  :-)

Maybe? None of them were vector files and they were pretty low-res.

I'm talking about the CPO graphics.  I supplied the vectorized .AI files (I said .eps files earlier but I meant .ai).

I have found a 6 player machine nearby me for sale, I am tempted but I don't want to be abducted in the middle of the night before I can finish vectorizing artwork. :)

1. Get that machine :P

2. I'm still working, just very slowly. A lot of my time is going into planning a wedding right now. My biggest block on real progress is that I'm still waiting on high res scans of the character artwork for the CPO. Some of the vector files I have a great and I'm going to use them, but I want to redo certain ones.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to stuff like this.

Good luck on your wedding! The Wife and I just got married on the fifth, we decided to take the cheaper route and get a probate office wedding, and spend the money on new furniture and electronics.

Not sure if I mentioned this or not, but this arcade game's character artwork in the game was based on this cartoon episode:
Pryde of the X-Men

Yeah, that was made by the people that did the robocop cartoon. They made that pilot in an attempt to get another show as robocop was ending.  It isn't that great of a show though, so it didn't go anywhere, and a couple years later we get the Fox kids show with the Jim Lee style costumes.

Well the guy ended the auction. Not surprising, his BIN was $3200 and  it was only at $1200 with 9 hours left and his reserve was met even after he lowered it. It's sad when people learn what the market will pay for these machines.

I've been MIA with life and such but have access again to my 6 player. So I can start scanning the CPO for anyone who needs it.

Problem is, I only have a pandigital wand scanner at the moment. Model s8x1103. Looking over it I can scan 1200dpi as jpeg or pdf, so not sure how that helps if any. Let me know and we can work out some file sharing so I can send these to you. Fell free to PM me since I notice those before coming back to the forums.

That would be unbelievably helpful. If you could just scan the characters on the CPO, I could get back to work on it.

I'm a super-perfectionist when it comes to stuff like this. I'm not happy with how Cyclops or Dazzler look. Cyclops is really jaggy and Dazzlers face is kinda freaky looking. The other characters all look great.

Small (but important) update:

I've done a little more work on the art, but I don't have anything to post regarding that. What I do have to post is that I talked to GameOnGrafix, and in the next weeks I will be giving them my completed files for use in their store. This art will finally be available for people to purchase.

I've done a little more work on the art, but I don't have anything to post regarding that. What I do have to post is that I talked to GameOnGrafix, and in the next weeks I will be giving them my completed files for use in their store. This art will finally be available for people to purchase.

ಠ_ಠ

Look, you don't have to give me anything.

But if you *gave* the artwork to someone else who is going to profit from it, thats seem...janky

If this thread was any indication, you spent some time on it but so did lots of others.  What are you getting in return?  What about Delusional AL?  The others?

Foh pah man! faux pas indeed.

I'm giving them the art in exchange for a free print of all of it (it would cost a lot to buy prints of all the art). This was the deal that Delusional originally had with GoG, and he gave me his blessing to do the same deal.

In addition, all materials that I have submitted we made entirely by me. I haven't submitted anybody else's work.

ChocolateApple is right:  Kinda.  I did indeed shoot him a PM, but I never heard back with a, "Sure thing man, thanks!" so I wasn't sure if he was doing this or not.  But now that he broke the news, I'm glad he is.

For those interested:  Here's a history of how it went.  (By the way thanks Generic Eric for looking out, I appreciate it man!  But it's cool, read below)

During my original artwork phase in 2009, Scott over at GameonGrafix.com (MameMarqees.com at the time) was gracious enough to supply me with his original 2 player X-men Hi-Res files (the ones he sells at his store).  He did not have to do this but he was happy that I was working on a 6-player version.  He is the man!  And I am forever grateful and his hi-res graphics were VERY useful.

I stated the intent to give the graphics over to Scott originally in the second page of this forum topic.  I wrote, "Once this is done I plan to let Scott at Mamemarquees.com have the final graphic.  Then he can post it in his store for fellow 6-player X-men owners out there."  At that point Scott and I had already reached an agreement.

Everyone who contributed afterwards knew this was my goal as well and contributed willingly towards that cause.  After all, it was a community effort.

I eventually got rid of the X-men 6 player arcade machine beast, but still had 90% of the artwork from my project.  Then I saw that ChocolateApple was resurrecting the project.  I wanted to see it to completion, so that everyone who has these machines out there can have repro artwork.  It was for the greater good.  So, when he asked me, I obliged and gave him all of my files.

I also sent him this PM:
"You may want to contact Scott Prior over at GameOnGrafix.com.  Originally, I worked out a deal with him that he would print out the graphics for me (at no cost to me) if I completed the restoration of the artwork and allowed him to use it in his store for others to buy.

However, now that I no longer have my machine, the torch has been passed onto you.  This was a long time ago, so his position may change.  But it's worth a shot to ask him.  Tell him I give my blessing regarding the supplied graphics and such.  I'm sure he would LOVE to have this in his store since no one else in the WORLD has it.

Good Luck!"

Again, I never heard back from ChocolateApple.  But now I see he took my advice (Good for you, I'm glad that the project lives on!)

All in all, my position is this:  I want everyone in the community to have access to the 6-player X-men artwork for their future restorations.  Period.  I think the final artwork will be in good hands with Scott at GameonGrafix.com.  He does great printing work.

Another small update:

I just got a hold of some NOS sideart for a 4-player X-Men game. Nobody has correct sideart for this game. When I'm done with the 6-player art, I'm going to work on getting a proper reproduction of the 4-player sideart started.

It was that art. It's really only missing the "X-Men" logo part, so I should be able to fix that without the last piece just using photos. The character art was the important part.

For everybody else, heres a little proof that I am still working on this. I also finished removing the color from Colossus, so I should have his picture vectorized and re-colored tonight. I'm giving up on copying the existing text, so I'm just going to end up using whatever font I can find that looks accurate. I should be finished with the bezel this weekend. At that point, I'm going to send a few pieces to GoG for reproduction and get to work on the CPO. Thanks to the guys at Ground Kontrol (thanks Anthony!), I should have exact measurements of the control panel to work with, which will allow me the highest level of accuarcy when I do my layout.

The same guy also had the 6 player artwork with the bio text. I think it might have been sold to the other guy on KLOV tough. Shame that the guy didn't scan it so everyone could benefit from it.

Right now I have the coin door stickers and CPO left. The CPO is the next thing I'm going to tackle. I need to take my control panel off my game and measure it so I have the correct dimension. The Jakobud measurements are wrong.

As for the the character cards, here is a comparison between the original and restored versions. I tried to get the font of the text as close as possible.

Nope, not dead yet. Work is just slow on this project while I deal with wedding stuff.

I also started talking to Rich from ThisOldGame. He's actually local to me so he *may* end up being the one who gets the files. I don't have a contract with anyone, so it really is up to me who gets them.
Rich also got his hands on some NOS 4p artwork, so it looks like I'm not going to be doing that project anymore. Now I just have to find someone to buy that artwork off of me, because I have no use for it.

Wow.... I'm glad I found this thread.  I have the 6 player beat as well and had kept it in my garage for the past 6 years with 1 or 2 extra pcb board of the game.  If bought the extra board just in case I need to swap out some defective rom or sound chips.  I found out one board would cause the machine to keep restating itself while going thru the rom check. So I'm still waiting for a chance to troubleshoot it :(

Small update:

A friend of mine hooked me up with an accurate layout for the CPO, as well as some more vector assets that I've been looking for.
I'm also working with ThisOldGame on getting the color pallete right (he likes his reproductions to be super accurate).

I will likely get back to this project more in a month or so. I absolutely want to get this done before my wedding, because we're going to have all our games at the reception.

I just pulled out my CPO files last night to work on it some more. Working with Rich, I need to go through all my finished files a tweak the colors to CMYK match them correctly with the originals. That's going to take a lot of test prints and probably a whole day.

That being said. Rich would love to have these files done before the Portland Retro Gaming Expo next month so we can clean up my machine and make it all pretty for the people who will play it. I'm hoping to get the CPO finished, as well as all the colors fixed on the marquee and bezel.

I also have some vector files of the big side art that will need some work, but then I should have that part done as well.

Important update:  The artwork is now available!  My buddy Joe Szabo from Szabo's Arcades now offers it in his store:

Check out the episode where we do a walkthrough of his shop and take a look at the never before seen artwork that he re-created, FROM SCRATCH.

Finally!  We can now put this artwork topic to bed!  Thanks to everyone who participated (and shared) their artwork expertise and assets.  Joe ended up creating everything from scratch (100% vectorized and color corrected) based on his own hi res scans of the originals he had.  But it's still inspiring to know that he saw the project through from start to finish.

ChocolateApple I am working on a project to create a slim version of the x men 6 player cabinet. I got my hands on one of these that fell off a trailer so the cabinet was just destroyed along with all the graphics but the electronics minus the monitors (obviously) are still in full working condition.
I was hoping you might be willing to share some of your vector files for the graphics or even the high res scans you've acquired so i could get this restored into a usable condition.
I would greatly appreciate your assistance and of course you would be credited on the cabinet for any graphics you are willing to share although this cabinet would be for personal use.

Does someone have this art and would they be willing to release it to the community? Perhaps on https://www.arcadeartwork.org/ or just add it to this post?
