Project Killer Instinct
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:02:17 pm »
picked up this Killer Instinct 1 from srabelpawz for $150
Just until I get my Killer Instinct 1 board fixed, I put in NBA Jam Tournament Edition V1.0 (with mortal kombat characters) and the matching header. For now, this will be fully restored to KI1, but if I cant get the boards fixed for a good price, it'll be a KI1 cab with NBAJam in it, lol.

heres what you want, the pix:

here's the side before any stripping is done.

this is after about an hour

handsome devil aint he?

I remember those companies! There was already damage to the side art before I got to it with my chemicals and plastic scraper.

Nice score! Your KI board was the one with a few burnt resistors, correct?

KI1 has some broken components, my KI2 is the burnt one. Know anyone that can fix one/both?

Wow. KI boards must be cursed. Sorry. I dont know anyone who could do any professional work with guarantees and such. I know that burnt board looked like you could jump a standard (not surface-mount) resistor of equal value to what was burnt, but it wouldn't look nice and for all I know that wouldn't work.

I can't help but notice that you have the Charlotte Hornets selected on NBA jam. That was my team once apon a time  :'( That should be a "Killer" restoration by the way! Sorry couldn't resist!

Hornets are one of the better more balanced teams, its just coincidence though usually I use Scorpion :)

heres the over all side art progress:

heres the CP side art 99% cleaned

Im considering the Xin1 board that has KI1 and KI2 on it if I cant get these KI1 and KI2 boardsets repaired.

these all taken with a REAL camera and not my phone.

left side is totally done

the quintessential BEFORE shot

I spray the paint remover on the side then put shop towels on it and spray the shop towels. This holds the paint thinner on the cab and keeps it from evaporating. This technique had me use 1/3 of a bottle for the last shot you see with all that paint off instead of the THREE bottles I used on the other side.

25 minutes of work.

1/3 of a bottle and 2 hours of work. Much better then 2 bottles and 8 hours of work to reach this point on the other side.

no, they got lost in the project picture thread split.
I'll look for them on my old camera but Im pretty sure they are lost.  it was basically me removing the black paint off the sides and revealing spinal. cab is in storage, still no KI board, too expensive.

I have a broken dedicated KI2 Im trying to get rid of , you wanna buy it? :)

yeah, the jamma wiring n stuff is all in there, I just used an extra breakout cable, soft15, and an IPAC2 (I broke a resistor off my JPAC) I almost wanna leave it in there, I've got 1 KI1 board and 2 KI2 boards and none of them work.

4 and a half years later, time to Necro bump this ---smurfette---!

So here was the panel as I got it on the KI YEARS ago, except I replaced the wonky sticks with Red supers:

Lets pull everything (I never noticed there wasnt a player 2 start button label until I was removing stickers):

Now its time for Bonnie to apply the new CPO artwork:

and cut out the holes.....

and now its time to install all new buttons and sticks.

The buttons were actually in pretty good shape but I figured if Im replacing the sticks I should just do it all.

Few things to note. I did not replace the plexiglass. I plan to, but Im still waiting to see if Haruman can send me plexi with the holes precut. Then I'll replace MKII, MK3, and KI all at the same time. The CP art is about 1/8th to 1/16th short on the sides but its very hard to notice with the plexi on.

Got the buttons and sticks from Tornado Terry, here is a link to one of his eBay auctions:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/380169006335

and I got the art from a seller on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251396283306

Good seller and good communication. Shipping took a little longer than expected, but that wasnt due to the seller. Once the package got to Chicago from Canada, it sat there for a week.  You peeps north of the border should get it within days.

And here is the KI replacement, unlit:

And here it is lit up:

Wow! It's looking fantastic so far!

I have been looking for a replacement KI 1 marquee for a while now. I can't seem to get one on ebay or anywhere.
Also my problem is that I live in South Africa.. I will definitely need to import it here. Plus I don't want a reproduction.
The only thing that's not original is the Marquee and coin slots.

Can you perhaps point me in the right direction?

This is what my coin door currently looks like.

I want the original setup like this. coin return slot, red coin acceptor and coin mechs

Plus I have this crappy reproduction marquee

My marquee actually is a reproduction, from eBay.  I don't think your marquee looks bad, its definitely different. Can you scan that label at the top of your bezel?
As for the coindoor, I have no clue where to get just the coin return parts and with shipping I dont think it'd be worth the cost of shipping to South Africa :/

That Marquee looks great!
I wouldn't mind having a reproduction marquee like the one you have.
Can you perhaps say what seller it was?

The label on the bezel is not on my cabinet.
The guy I bought my Killer Instinct from, had 2 machines. one with a marquee and one without.
The machine without a marquee was in much better shape, so I asked him to put the marquee in the better machine.

This picture I used was the the pic he sent me.

I could do some research and try and find a reproduction scan of the label.
I might even make one myself.
I'll let you know.

Actually, as far as I know. The Killer Instinct machine never came out with any bezel stickers on it.
The KI bezel was left blank intentionally to keep the all black aesthetics.
I might be wrong..

I like the look of the bezel with the sticker on it as well. It looks less empty.

I found a sticker, all good. Here is a link to the marquee I got. its not perfect, only real issue is the D in MIDWAY, which isnt a huge deal.

I am currently working on a KI movelist bezel based on the KI2 bezel. I'll be attaching the art to this post, if I ever get it done.
