I'm going to toss this out there just because I really want to purchase the "Bubble Bobble Sticker set" I posted this a while ago and I was directed to a download jpeg for reprinting, and it came out alright *(see attachment) but i really wanted to find a NOS set surely someone out there must have it! or perhaps even a nice cut repro would be fine. or perhaps if you don't want to give it up can you at least give me a nice solid scan at 300+dpi?

I love this game and is probably in my top 5 all time I'm not very good at the game but have many fond memories. Also a parental warning to anyone that has not heard this song it's hilarious it's on an album called 8-bit bull$h%! from the NES version any ways it's hilarious it's got a buncha cursing but you have been warned listen to it here:

http://www.scrubclubrecords.com/music/8bit/MadHatter%20-%20AFS.mp3 the entire album can be downloaded here:

http://www.scrubclubrecords.com/music/8bit.html

of course my favorite cut of the album is "bullet's and buckshot" which is Gun.Smoke song track 6. http://www.scrubclubrecords.com/music/8bit/MadHatter%20-%20Bullets%20And%20Buckshot.mp3

Well I might as well kick things off.

345,560 points - round 14.  Mame32 v0.125, INP available.

A sucky score.  I know I can do over 1mil.

Unfortunately, I didn't record it, but I did take a couple of screengrabs while playing. I was just testing a couple versions, because I couldn't find one without a bad or incorrect ROM, and had a good game going, figured I'd play it out. Anyway, got 1,409,330, finishing on round 41. Didn't die for the first time until about level 33 or 34, getting 2 secret chambers. Do the ROMs out there give errors on every version of MAME?

(edit...it would help if I attached the images ;) )

If you don't die at all, prior to levels 20, 30, 40 and 50 (I think that's 'em all) when on those levels an archway door thing appears and you go thru that to get to the chambers.

according to klov "Original Game mode - Using the first player's controls during the title screen, press shoot, jump, shoot, jump, shoot, jump, right, start. You will find cool prizes in rounds 20, 30, 40 and 50." isn't that considered a cheat ?

If ou use Orig mode, you get the secret rooms whether ou die or not. If ou don't use an codes at the start, you get them if you DON'T die at all. Therefore to get the one at level 50, you can't die til then.

edit: can ou guess which ke's on the blink :/

Yeah, I definitely didn't use any cheats. Just started up the game normally :) You get the doorways to the secret diamond filled rooms on 20, 30 and 40. On 50, the doorway warps you to 70. I think I *might* have done the latter once, but probably using the power up cheat.

I concur that you can definitely get to the crystal rooms without cheating.  I've done it several times, but I didn't realize that it was getting to certain levels without dying that was triggering it.

Now I know.  And knowing is half the battle.

Playing around with the MAME cheats (I didn't feel like playing a game at the moment ;) ), it looks like there's 36 10K diamonds in each room. If you can get all 3 rooms, of course, that's 1,080,000.

Got to level 40.

I only got one crystal room... real stupid death somewhere between level 20 and 30.

INP is attached.  Sorry but there are two runs in that INP.  I forgot to stop and start a new one.  I recorded with a custom built version of MAME 64 ver 128.  I meant to switch to a more common 32 bit version but I forgot to update my script.  Future INPs will be 32 bit (not sure if it makes a difference for playback).

I get "One or more ROMs/CHDs for this game are incorrect. The game may not run correctly" but it seems to run fine.

1,534,680 points.  Didn't get any secret rooms, but I made it round 46.  Damn it gets hard.

MAME32 v0.125, INP attached.

well.. might as well post my score although i know I can improve. I died so many times in a row I only got to Round 40 once those dogs came out with fire breath it was all over! although i was able to get to 2x diamond rooms and ive never even seen any diamond rooms before this post. I got realllly lucky on i think it was Round 29 i got that cross that literally turns the screen into "the blue screen / ocean of death" its sooo cool i never knew of this before totally jacks up your score (The diamond rooms) I don't care if anyone beats my score i'd like to just for my own sake break the 2 million mark. Any ways.... I think this is a decent start.

I'm sure DrFrag will beat me within an hour like the last time I posted! But here is a better score. I'm improving a little bit but still would like to break the 2mil point mark, I came really close and just died way too many times in stupid situations.'

Score was 1,971,920

2,189,920.  ;D

Had the weirdest thing happen.  On level 10 a bubble came down from the ceiling that looked like it had an explosion inside.  When I burst it, it gave me 100,000 points (although for some reason it only added 50,000 to my score) and I could shoot fireballs for the next 5 rounds!  :o  I also got the first two secret rooms.

INP attached.  Playback with Mame v0.125.

According to http://bubblebobblehq.110mb.com/bubblebobble.html , there's a 1 in 4096 chance of the fireball bubble appearing.  Very cool site, btw, highly recommended reading.

Drat! Bubble Bobble is my all-time favorite. My cab  is BB-themed, so I had no choice but to join this competition. Can't get past the 1.1 Million  points @ level 48 though, so I guess I'll have to read up on how to get some more points. Gonna keep trying the upcoming week.

I've had that happen to me once in all my years of playing this game.  Stuff like this makes this game kind of a bad candidate for high score challenges, as so much depends on the randomness of the items that pop up.  Still a very fun game though.

2,145,760, round 51.  :dizzy:

Seems I hit 2mil around round 40, then the rounds get really hard and I have trouble getting more points.

Still haven't got 3 secret rooms in one game, so I'm still in with a chance.  ;D

I have not gotten to all 3 secret rooms yet either I think more or less whoever is able to get to Rd. 40 without dying should pretty much have this competiton in the bag. But you never know because Items are generated pretty randomly. If you get the 3rd secret room my guess would be you will end up with roughly 2.6-3mil which would be the nail in the coffin.

I've been reading through the site I linked to earlier.  It looks like there isn't much that's actually generated randomly.  It's mostly based on internal counters of things you do.

On each round, there are two items that appear.  One is a basic item that's worth points, and the value of it is higher depending on how quickly you finished the previous round.  The other item is a special.  For example, the more monsters you pop simultaneously, the more variety of EXTEND letters you'll get on the next level.  Get three of any one letter, and the next special item will be a crook (or whatever) that makes the big fruit fall at the end of the level.  There are special items that appear after you pick up a certain number of crosses, for killing a certain number of enemies with fire, the list goes on.  It just looks random because the action is so insane.

I make more of an effort now to collect EXTEND letters (whether I need them or not) so I'll get more giant fruit.

Record hottest temperature here in Adelaide today.  Not much to do but sit under the air-con, drinking cold beer and playing Bubble Bobble.  ;D

2,667,410, round 62.  8)

Only got 2 secret rooms again, after dying stupidly on round 38.  I made a real effort to fall through the floor (do it 15 times and you get a potion), and move from side to side while waiting for level loads (move 15 screen widths and you get the red slipper of speed).  It seemed to make a real difference.  My other big win was an explosion-bubble on round 55 which couldn't have come at a better time.

INP attached.  Mame v0.125

Looks like I might fold. I'm not sure what number level "Jump!" is but that level sucks. i think it's in the 30's... I can beat it but push comes to shove I always die on that level. I remember on the NES version you were able to bounce on the bubbles and rise up through the center but it doesn't seem to work that way. Very rarely do I ride a bubble on the side and not bump my head on those dudes, and then they eventually move up to a higher platform, which I can then get them without any deaths.

Noooooooooo! My most worthy adversary!  :hissy:

It's definitely one of those learning-curve-shaped-like-a-wall levels.  The other bad one is 63.

There's a place you can stand about 1/3 of the way in from either side.  Shoot a bubble towards the middle and jump on it, and chances are the monsters will jump to their higher platforms.  Check my INP for the precise position.  Round 35 no longer gives me problems with this technique.  8)

that round is a ---smurfette---, really hard to do 1 player. have you tried climbing by standing close to the wall let a bubble shoot and jump at the same time so you end up bouncing on the bubble you shot, repeat and climb. with fast shoot you can fly up walls this way

I'm part of the 2 mil club!  Couldn't have done it without Dr. Frag's website he posted.  Kinda reminds me of your Wonderboy site.  See how useful those sites can be?  You should totally get yours rehosted.

Anyway, it's crazy that pretty much none of the item generation is random.  Sure helps knowing it though.  My score should have really been in the 2.3 million range... I missed my first potion accidentially popping the last enemy just as the potion appeared.

Sweet!

I'm gonna have another shot right now.  See if I can get 3 secret rooms.

Edit: Haha, got killed on the Jump level.  How ironic.
