S video to scart
« on: March 08, 2002, 12:34:49 pm »
I'm a bit confused about all this. I'm after using the s-video output on my system to a scart tv. If I get an appropriate cable, does the tv still need to be an s-video one or does it convert the signal? Also, will a cable like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1336461770&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=1015624073&indexURL=0&rd=1 do the job? Does the s-video send sound as well or do I need to connect it to the headphone jack on my sound card? Any help appreciated about this.

Why not just use scart all the way through?  I hear it is better then SVideo.  Why convert and convert.  Find out if your card handles scart directly

Basically all I know is I've got an s-video out and a tv-out. Is the tv out scart or do I have to check the video card settings somehow?

I'm from the US.... so I'm not really sure.

I did hear some people complain that their ATI cards seemed to be default set to scart and it was causing troubles until they changed it (ie, couldn't boot into TV mode).  They might have got a batch that was destined to go to the US.

but scart is a composite style connection I think.  So you might need a card specific for it.  But in the UK, that should be the default.

Card is Geforce 2. I'd check it out better only this isn't it I'm using now. I am in the uk though. So I  take it the composite is the best way to go. Cool.. So how do you get the system to recognise what it's outputting to, or is that irrelevant? Do you just muck around with your video card settings until it works, basically?

No, the US composite standard sucks d!@k

but scart (I believe) is closer to composite then svid.  But you should check your video card to see if it directly handles scart anyway.  If it can, that will be your best bet.

You will drop some quality every conversion of type.  But svid->scart will be MUCH better then US composite.  Straight scart will be best.

I think I'll just try and find a cheap s-video tv, if it's not good enough I'll worry about it later. One last question, if the tv's specs say svhs, is that the same as s-video? I remember someone pointed out there was a difference between the terms.
