The game for round 10 is Wonder Boy. Chosen by last round winner, Drawfull.

- Use the Original sega version (set name "wboy"), default settings, no cheats.

- Use any mame version or variant you wish.

- Last day is Saturday, January 17th (around midnight Pacific Standard Time).

- High score wins (a tie means there's more than one winner).

- No savestates, savestate practices, etc during the round.

Well, I start it off I guess...104180. I don't know the levels very well, so sometimes I get a nasty surprise ;)
I can provide an INP if necessary (recorded on wolfmame 106). I'm sure there'll be alot better scores, and I know I can improve on it a bit.

I played on the master sys too - I'm sure I remember that you could fly on that or at least get some shoes and go above the trees. My local arcade had one (a conversion) as well. A few years ago, me and my partner used to cain this game in MAME, she's still miles better than me at it (and vs super mario too); can't get anywhere near as far as once was able now, but still love it 'cos it's so simple. Seemed easier on a joypad than a cp.

The MARP record is scary, but helpful - not watched it for a long time, but it's a perfect game. Every doll, every fruit at max point values... eek.

I used to play Wonderboy in Monsterland on the Sega Master System.  I actually finished it... which is tough.  But I've never played this version.  I'll have to try it when I get home in 2 weeks (I'm on vacation in Panama).

Man, I miss my arcade...  :P

323,720 died alot in the same spot over and over because i was impatient on a particular scene with moving platforms. score is easily beatable. It's nice to see the instruction cards in this game, I put them in before Mr. Do had them obtained them from pinny parlour, does any one have the non-japanese ones? that i can send to him although the guru just got a gigantic pile of instruction cards so who knows what's in that pile.

Should be easy to beat, yeah. I'm not complaining. I just haven't had the patience to stick with this game past a few minutes. Good competition for you two, though.

What version of MAME did you use? (it helps to mention that, because I don't think INP's work across different versions)

I have a new idea for the competition's for the future.. the winner should win a piece from the actual game. Maybe it can be the original manual / marquee , side art whatever anything. Maybe an entree fee ? or volunteer donation ?? just a small prize related to the game :blah:

We need sponsorship!  Someone talk to someone.

I'm at 452000 and some change.  Holy balls at world 4-3.  I was wondering when this game would get so hard that I wouldn't want to play it anymore.

For the record, the top 5 scores recorded on Twin Galaxies are as follows:

1.  1,217,240
2.  1,171,780
3.  1,000,060
4.  895,160
5.  510,980

Dr. Frag is halfway to the world record.

No problem, I didn't realise INP files could be attached.  :)

Didn't get all the dolls, I missed 5-1 and 6-4.  Not that I planned on doing area 8 anyway.

That is absolutely insane.  You must have played this game a whole lot to get that good.  What is your history with this game?  Do you own a dedicated machine?  How much have you played it?

I can't get the inp to work, which is a shame. I tried using MAMEXT 0.125 (the only version of 125 I could locate)
Download mame0125b.exe from http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html
Put wboy.zip into a folder called rom
Put the inp (perhaps rename it to something shorter) into a folder called inp
Run the command line mame wboy -playback wboyrecording.inp
Hope that works for you.  :)

I did a bit of showing off at the end of area 1, riding the skateboard into the boss's cave.  ;D

That is absolutely insane.  You must have played this game a whole lot to get that good.  What is your history with this game?  Do you own a dedicated machine?  How much have you played it?
I played it a lot in the arcades from '86 to the mid 90s, and I got good enough to reach area 5 or so.  I even tried to buy a cab of it but I couldn't find one.  When it came out on MAME I played it a lot.  A lot of reflexive memories came back which made playing easy.  I could easily finish Wonder Boy in Monster Land so I was determined to finish the original Wonder Boy.
I put together a Wonder Boy web page with everything I knew about the game, including all the secrets and panoramic screenshots of entire levels.  The remnants of it can be found at http://web.archive.org/web/20060821232109/afk.sagamers.com/wonderboy/wonderboy.html
Collecting information and graphics for the web page taught me a lot about the game.  I also watched game recordings from MARP, when I could get them to work.  Eventually I was able to finish the game at area 7-4, or collect all the dolls and reach area 8-3.  My best score at this point was 1.8m, but I was always more interested in going for distance rather than score.

Until this week, I hadn't played it in a couple of years.  It all came back to me very quickly though, so I was quite pleased that I could finish it within a few days.  :)  I really don't have to concentrate until area 5-2, it hits some kind of threshold of difficulty there for me.

Looking at the Twin Galaxies high score, it looks like they probably didn't get past area 7-3 or 7-4.  It's quite hard there, and if you finish at 7-4 you can easily get around 1.4 or 1.5 million.  At the end, each doll collected during the game is worth another 10,000, and each remaining life is worth 50,000.  I had a nice lot of lives remaining which is why my score hit 1.9 million.

Yesderday I collected all the dolls and played up to area 8.  I wanted to see if it's as hard as I remember.  It's even harder than I remember.  :o

Yeah, but the zip was still too big.  I had to zip it again to squeeze a few more KB out of it.  ;D
