Fan made Mega-man game.  Supposed to be better than the recent official releases 9 & 10.

Nice, have not yet gotten to play this release.  Will have to block some time off in the next coming weeks to devote to it.

Sonic Before The Sequel

Fan-made Sonic game, stays pretty true to the first two games in spirit and in gameplay, and actually takes place between Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic 2.  I found it a bit buggy at points, and there were spots where the level design left some things to be desired, but all-in-all the graphics and music are engaging and enjoyable.

Finally found a gameplay video of that game "Eggnogg" I posted on the previous page:

This game is AMAZING on two player cabs with two buttons and 8-ways.  A must-have, and a relatively under-the-radar release.

Grand Prix is a racing game inspired by Pole Position and other racing games from the previous century. These games do not use a complete 3d system but rather a fixed view on a track that is accomplished with 2d game techniques, as explained and illustrated on Lou's Pseudo 3d Page. In Grand Prix, the ultimate goal for the player is to try and complete 8 laps, winning the gold cup. This is quite a challenge, with the clock ticking down and opponent cars getting in the way. The car is controlled using the arrow keys. The music in this game is by coda (coda.s3m.us). Sound effects were made using SFXR, and the game was programmed in Blitz Max.

Gaurodan

Quote
Long forgotten is the legend of Gaurodan, the bird of thunder, and his fight with Guayota, the fire beast. But now mankind has discovered the egg of Guayota within Mount Teide, and it is only a matter of time until Guarodan returns from the sky to fight the beast and punish us for awakening his ancient enemy.

Fly around the Canary Islands as Gaurodan, and destroy cities, armies and colossal creatures in your path throught this frantic shmup, created for the lovers of classic games that require mastering.

You'll need some mastering to play this game because controls are not the usual: you have two buttons to shoot air-air and air-ground, and you can't stop moving in the air. Guarodan is inspired by early titles like Defender, Choplifter or Sky Kid in terms of gameplay, and has a similar production style to other arcade games like Commando, Gyrodine or 1942.

Great finds 404   :cheers:   Both games are fantastic. Locomalito is a FANTASTIC indie developer. Definitely putting both of these into my PC game cab.

Yeah, he makes great games. I've been playing more homebrew stuff that is akin to retro games more than legit commercial retro games lately. Mostly because i don't have a cab yet.  :P

Sloth Patrol

Twin stick style shooter akin to Geometry Wars

 In Sloth Patrol, you play Julio Treewalker, a top fighter pilot enlisted to protect the sloth homeworld of Slothonia. Opposing you is the evil Possum Empire, which is intent on galactic domination. Possum forces are led by the evil Colonel Hisser, the sworn enemy of Julio Treewalker.

With the help of your commanding officer, Admiral Leafchewer, you will join Julio in his battles against the Possum Empire. Help Julio rid the galaxy of Possum tyranny!

Invasodado

Space invaders meets Columns?

In July of 2012 we had an invite-only mixer for single retro games, kind of like a speed-dating thing. Most of the games invited were still getting over some rather nasty divorce or separation issues. It was a nice learning experience (Dear Lord does Custer's Revenge have baggage), but it turned out to be something of a bust.

For the most part.

As it turns out, two of the guests, Space Invaders and Columns, were destined for each other. Fast forward to June 2013 and their first child is born. Much rejoicing and alcohol was had. The baby was hence christened Invasodado.

So all right, you've got the usual Earth defense routine, what with the space ship and the aliens and the always-imminent death. But, here's the fun part: aliens don't just disappear! No, apparently, these guys turn into colored blocks for some reason. Things will get messy pretty quickly, but thankfully you're allowed to clear these blocks! Just remember, you have to do both at the same time, and the aliens get faster and faster as the game goes on.

Has anyone yet mentioned Super Mario Crossover or Abobo's Big Adventure? Both are wonderful remakes-ish of old NES games. As is Retro City Rampage (is that on PC?) Mario and Abobo are online flash games, but surely someone can figure out how to rip them from the bowels of the internet and download them to play offline, right?

Oh and what about that Megaman/ Street Fighter game official sanctioned by Capcom? I never had the chance to play it yet, but I'm sure its awesome.

anyone know how to change button configs for eggnogg?

The author does state that he/she will work on a button remapping option in a future version. Maybe if we all leave enough feedback, he/she will add button config & cmd line full screen.

It looks like a lot of fun but is not cab-friendly for me.

For portal I use the joystick. A button for jump, one for shoot red, one for shoot blue, one for action button, one for look up, one for look down and one for squat. I have a 6 button layout with joystick and for the seventh button I use my coin button. So far I haven't had any problems.but I haven't played it all the way through yet.

If it's the first Portal, there's going to be quite the challenge when you get to the end. There are some things you'll have to do, which will require very quick reflexes. Good luck!

anyone know how to change button configs for eggnogg?

The author does state that he/she will work on a button remapping option in a future version. Maybe if we all leave enough feedback, he/she will add button config & cmd line full screen.

It looks like a lot of fun but is not cab-friendly for me.

It is easy to get it working on a cab - I used the latest version of Joy2Key and it worked a charm.  As for fullscreen, I think it's one of the F keys that you hit to make it fullscreen, then each subsequent time you run it it remembers the previous setting.  Are you using a keyboard encoder that allows for unlimited simultaneous inputs, or a hacked gamepad?

To contribute, here is "Foiled", another 2-player fencing game, albeit with different gameplay than Eggnogg.  This was a student-made game, and already seems to be another party favourite:

www.foiledgame.com

Controls needed:  8-way and one button for jump/select

Endprodukt

Check out Scoregasm!

$1.25 on steam.  Works well in cab with a mouse on a flat ledge.  I think it might be pretty cool with joystick and trackball.  Don't have a trackball installed to know for sure.

Nidhogg

A fencing simulator for one or two players with strange, lo-fi graphics and a cool soundtrack.  Includes a built-in tournament mode.  I need to upgrade my machine to get this to run at full speed, and also it claims to work with controllers but the only ones I could get it working with were my wired xbox360 pads.  U360s do not work natively with this game, you will need to configure JoyToKey in order to play it, I can't speak on any other controllers than those ones.  But let's get to the game: it plays really well as a two-player game, with a tug-of-war aspect and all kinds of moves your character can do that lends well to player discovery.  No tactic is perfect for disposing of your foe; you may have success 3-4 times in a row doing the same things, but next thing you know your opponent has adapted.  Also, there is a huge amount of satisfaction when you end up sticking your opponent and running away, or running up to a downed player and breaking his neck before he has a chance to get up.  Extremely addictive, and well-worth the 15$ pricetag for anyone with a 2-player cabinet.

Re: Nidhogg.

It looks absolutely perfect for a cab but unfortunately it's Steam-only and I've paid for it once to my desktop, hoping to transfer it - I'm not paying for it again *and* having to run Steam on my cab.

Disappointing that there is no way to transfer the game when you have paid for it...

[EDIT - I have managed to hack the Nidhogg clone, Eggnogg using Auto-Hotkey to re-map the controls to standard MAME:

Code: [Select]
#SingleInstance Force
Run, eggnogg.exe
r::Up
f::Down
d::Left
g::Right
a::RCtrl
q::RShift
Up::w
Left::a
Right::d
Down::s
ESC::ExitAPP

Haven't played it in earnest with 2 people yet but I'm keen.

You've added duke nukem.  Presumably you could also have doom and heretic/hexen?  And maybe the lesser known shadow warrior?

are these free?? particularly Crazy Taxi so i don't have to try and get a Dreamcast emulator to work

Quote
GTA Vice City:
Is NOT a arcade friendly game at all, since it designed with use with a xbox/ps3 controller in mind and not with arcade cab in mind. How can you really use a 2 analog controllers AND buttons simulations at once? You can't really do that with a normal arcade controls most use.

I intended for digital joysticks that can work the turret angle as well as have secondary function (such as zoom) when on foot. When I play on my computer I almost only use the mouse with 2 buttons (trackball on cab) and the arrow keys (left digital joystick on cab). Very few of the other buttons get used a lot. Depending on one's control panel, and how they layed the buttons out, it could either be horribly cab unfriendly to working well on a cab. (For it to work on my cp, I would need to add a trackball for direction that the charactor is looking, as it would be horrid with 2 joysticks).

BTW never played the console versions, so I cannot comment on those controls...

They used all buttons on the Xbox 360/PS2 controller (these versions I have played), and is clearly for me designed for that.... But still it have no fell of arcade game at all. The list should split into two list, these with real arcade/simple arcade game, and these which might require more controllers, lige GTA games.

Howover GTA1 and GTA2 can been a real gem on a arcade cab, which might play a much better than these 3d versions!

Crimzon Clover: World Ignition (available from Steam)

One of the best shmups of recent time. It can be played in vertical full screen as well as on a horizontal screen. Highly recommended.
