Can't forget this Locomalito tribute to the Ghouls N Ghosts franchise, Maldita Castilla (which came out late 2012) is a freeware homage to one of the hardest platforming series of yesteryear.

Too bad the Original Post is so far out of date (most links are dead)  :(
