Not sure how you will "handle it from the sides" when going down the stairs unless those are some oftly wide stairs.  You will almost certainly have to tip it back and have one guy at the top and one at the bottom, maybe two and two if you can manage.

They may have meant something like using a hand truck (dolly) from the sides and tipping it that way.

Just remember the guy on the bottom needs to be ready to take the brunt of the weight.
And take it ONE step it at a time.

Rent a hand truck. One made for a fridge.
It has belts and rollers along the back.
strap arcade to hand truck. Tip cab back to your waist level.
let rollers guide you down the stairs.
I hit 220 pounds. I can hold back the cabs my self.
If you a  smaller person get help with it.
to get this one in my house I had to remove 2 doors and even the door jams.
I just left the door jams off and re drywalled in a frame.
this one is a BEAST to move.
