Laser Multi Touch Projection Cocktail Table
« on: December 23, 2008, 04:00:34 pm »
I've been away from the arcade community for a long time, but I thought people might be interested in my latest project.  I've been involved in multi touch technology.  I've been experimenting with lasers, IR cameras, projectors and screens for a few weeks and I decided to build a dedicated multi touch cabinet and also incorporate a fully functional MAME set up.  The cocktail table was a badly treated Mr. Do that was originally a Super Cobra.  There is more info on my website.

Here are some pics:

Whoa!  Nice!  I definitely want to know more about this.

It's the ultimate cat toy!  Finally the laser pointer reacts!

Very cool  8)

Whats the current scope with multi touch technology? All I seem to see are people stretching photos.  ???

The monitor seems nice, what are you using?

EDIT: I suppose it helps to read the link you provided  :). How are you finding the projected image? I'm currently pondering on whether to stay 21" CRT or ~20" LCD for my cocktail. I know nothing about projectors. I assume viewing angle isn't a problem, are there any sacrifices with responce etc?

Sorry for the ubiquitous photo show.  I'm seeing many applications such as games, teaching, design, advertising, retail, etc.  As vendors start to release MT monitors, I'm sure the software will take off.

You can get very high picture quality with the right screen material.  Roscoe gray seems to work the best, but I had to go with rear projection Screen Goo to accommodate the IR lasers.  There are many advantages to a projector.  It makes the cab very light.  It is very easy to mount.  You can have a very big screen.  Mine is around 25" diagonal.   It leaves you a ton of free space in the cab.  I have not noticed any response issues.  There are negatives.  Small projectors can be expensive, but my mount design allows for easy removal so I can use it for work too.   A mirror is required because many projectors can not be mounted vertically.   A good manual zoom is necessary so you can adjust the picture size to fit your cab.  The Casio has a 2x which is very flexible.  You will never match the screen quality of a monitor.   Although it is just a matter of time before high quality laser/led projectors are released that are the size of a deck of cards.
