Video Card/hardware question

Does having a high powered video card help play high end M.A.M.E. games? I was told once that it didn't matter what kind of card you have, because the games are not coded to take advantage of the card's technology.
I have a 3.2 Ghz Pentium D processor with 2 gb 800 Mhz RAM, but I'm using an old 64mb GeForce video card. Games like Ridge Racer play but are extremely choppy and slow. I'm wondering if upgrading to a more modern 512mb card would help, or maybe I just need to upgrade to 4gb of RAM?

Upgrading your card will do nothing for mame. MAME is a CPU intensive program.
There is a thread on benchmarks for an overclocked dual core or quad processor. http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=72776.msg750709#msg750709

More acurately, only 3D games are starting, or are planned, to take advantage of GPUs.

So there is at least some motivation to have a decent card then? My processor is certainly fast enough to handle any 2D games, so it is the 3D variety that I would like to get some improvement. I think I will look into overclocking as well.
