yes, the cheapest and fastest solution would be to NIC cards and a cross over cable. Less than $40 and you'll get 100 mb/sec transfer speed.

Considering the OP said he knows nothing about networking the fastest and cheapest solution would be to do as SirPoonga suggested and pull the hard drive and put it in his second box for file tranfer/backup.

I agree that the CompUSA USB Network cables are the easiest cheapest option.  The 8ft cable is 19.99.

actually lowes carries a 5 ft patch cable for 5.00
