Any Hunter S. Thompson Fans?

(1/1)

JeepMonkey:
I recently watched a documentary on Hunter S. Thompson, and I was very interested in learning more about his work.

Has anyone read any of his books?  I have seen Fear and Loatihng in Las Vegas and thought it was a great movie.

I was thinking of starting with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hells Angels, or Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail 72.

The documentary also showed drawings by Ralph Steadman.  I thought they were pretty cool.

Ginsu Victim:
Go pick up a copy of the movie "Where the Buffalo Roam" while you're at it. Bill Murray as HST is great, especially in the courtroom scene.

CCM:
It sounds like The Rum Diaries is finally getting made with Johnny Depp reprising his role as Thompson.  This movie has been on again/off again a bunch of times, so hopefully it will finally get made.  I loved Fear and Loathing and thought Depp played a great Thompson, so I'm definitely looking forward to The Rum Diaries.

I loved Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.  Much much better than the movie.  I liked the movie a lot, but the overall tone missed the mark, I thought.  After reading the book all I could think was, "Good lord, I need to do more drugs."  I think the movie tends to make you think, "Hmm . . . I should probably not do any of that stuff."   ;D  I haven't read anything else of his.

Zero_Hour:
I'm a fan.

Fear & Loathing is the best place to start. By the end you'll know if you really need to read any more of his stuff as you'll have a complete grasp of his social and political outlook which dominates just about everything he writes. He wrote a column for espn.com for a while, just search "hey rube" from their main page. If you are digging that, then I would definitely recommend Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72, & Hells Angels, as well as The Great Shark Hunt.
