I'd be interested in what Randy has to say, but I believe you have S and L reversed.  The long end of the LED is usually the Anode, and the resistor goes on the Anode.

The short wire is the cathode (goes toward ground), and the long wire is the anode (goes towards positive supply).  That is consistent with the diagram posted above.

The resistor can go on either side.  Electrically, it doesn't matter.  There are practical considerations for putting the resistor on either side, and one could argue them all day long.
