Phone solicitation rant
shardian:
My father-in-law donated to the State Troopers fund. Last time they called, he happened to ask how much actually goes to the troopers. The phone guy responded by saying 'a guaranteed minimum 14%'. It may have been 7, but I'm pretty sure 14.
Long story short, F-in-law no longer donates to the fund. ;D

I get calls from two of those places every year... one is a "MA Police Fund" that seems to be one of those groups that barely gives any to them. Then there is the actual local Police group where 100% of the money goes to their outreach and they come pick the money up themselves and drop off tickets to their ball as a thank you. I donate to the local one every year... I can't get the other one to stop calling me.

Some of those numbers are pretty shocking when you actually see where the money goes. One so-called charity my parents used to be members of was in the single digit range. So of all the millions (billions?) this charity received each year from all over the world, less than 10% actually goes towards any good. Most of the money went towards the head members fat wallets (I used to visit one of their houses. It's astonishing how much luxury these ---smurfs--- live in) and the lobbyists in D.C.

You can usually separate the good ones from the bad by asking them to send you print materials for review. A good charity will have no problem with it. A scam charity won't ever want to spend the money or they don't even have any brochures.
Ginsu Victim:
I just hang up on every solicitor the moment they say who they are. One time I had a guy with AT&T call me back....twice!
"Hi, I'm calling on behalf of AT&T..."--CLICK!
I go back to sleep...
RING!!!
"Hi, I think we got cut off."
"No, I hung up on you."
CLICK!
RING!!!!!!!
"Sir, I'm calling from AT&T, not the FBI."
"You called back AGAIN?!?"
CLICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
