Dual system project: Joy-ro
mh12:
hello,
i'm working on setting up MAME in this candy cabinet I got at auction a while ago:
anybody into candy cabs ever heard of this thing? it's by Andamiro, from Korea. the marquee is pretty cool.. i'm going to keep it for the time being.
it came with a Namco system 246 running Soul Calibur II. you can see here that i've mounted a computer (AMD Athlon 2000+) on top of it:
you can see the harddrive and power supply to the right on that picture. the HD is screwed into HD mounting brackets which, for the time being, are just sitting on wood. i'll screw it in later. the power supply is sitting on the metal encasing the coin box. i got a JPAC down bottom there.. just hanging around until i get some mounting feet and mount it next to the 246's little JAMMA board.
the monitor is multisync.. and if i'm reading the dipswitches on the 246 correctly, it's was running at 31khz in the arcade. i got an ArcadeVGA anyhow to have all the different resolutions.
the 246 setup is completely intact - all i do to change it from MAME is swap the JAMMA and monitor cables and switch the audio.
i've been reading on here about a lot of people taking the original cabinet power supply out. unless mine starts to smell (?) when it's running MAME for a long time, i think i will keep it as is. this raises one question though:
the power supply
the monitor cord
2 round prongs going into a flat-type converter --- that says 250V!
i'm in Canada by the way - 110V.
anyone know what could be going on here? might the power supply also be some kind of voltage converter? i'm afraid to plug the monitor directly into the mains.
i do know the machine was used for years in an arcade here. for some reason the ground prong was ripped off the cord coming from the cabinet, too. i wired up a replacement plug.
you can see how long it's been around through the bookkeeping on SCII:
thanks to y'all for all the help on these forums!

Awesome! Wish I could get something as sexy as that at an auction!
mh12:
thanks, man.
another question related to the monitor (if someone could shed some light on the above i'd really appreciate it!): with both 246 or the computer, it gets periodic green/purple shades passing through it. and then it will be fine. though the corners are always pretty yellow. i guess it's in need of a good degaussing, huh?
i'm a bit nervous because i don't have any documentation on the monitor. i can't even see what manufacturer/model it is. i suppose the 15/30khz switching is automatic.. but maybe not?
also, there's an "impedance" switch next to the position/size pots (under the CP), for "high" and "low".. any idea what that should be set to? i've never touched it. forget what it's set to as i'm not home right now.
mh12:
later on i'm going to take a pic of the monitor chassis and make a post in the Monitor forum.

Wow that thing looks like a really cool project candy cab. I've been searching for one of those for a while, I found one when I was living back in Seattle but did not have any money at the time to grab it.
Are you going to swap out the joysticks/buttons for sanwa or seimitsu parts? and any plans to spruce it up at all like custom art or anything?
