The humor is as solid today as it was back then. John Cleese is the foundation upon which Fawlty Towers was built, so of course it's funny because of him, but don't forget Andrew Sachs as Manuel.

Remember that some of the famous American shows like All The Family and Sanford and Son were based on UK comedies. One of my favorite ones were the Comic Strip Presents. Try and find it on video. Its very funny.

So it seems that US comedy (which I have a hard time laughing at [being American]) doesn't hold a light to UK comedy. That laughter track doesn't work anymore. Friends is a prime example. The US version of the office is kinda funny only because the writers were from the UK hit show.

the american office was written by an american team,Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant were barely involved and definitely did no writing for it

I can't believe that no one's mentioned Peep Show. It's easily the funniest British comedy series of recent years, and incredibly twisted (the type of humour I like).

im gonna defend myself by saying my list was off the top of my head but yes i cant believe i left it out, its incredible.
super hans could well be the funniest character ever in a sitcom, but really we all know thats is this guy
