Try wrapping the foam rubber weatherstripping around the mirror with aluminum foil when you put it back a bit farther. You want the light to bounce off the sides, and the weatherstripping is likely absorbing some of the light. You probibly also need something to disperse the light when it passes through the spacer instead of just hitting the back of the knob.
I bet you could use some of that funky plexiglass that bends more light to the edges that you see in a few store displays where the edge looks impossibly bright, but I cant recall what that stuff is called.

Here is Windows desktop. I havent figured out how to play DVDs from XLobby either. Have to exit to windows to play with media player.
