Like the previous comps, post whenever you want.  As you go is certainly more exciting.

Thats 80,000 more than my high score and I was damn proud of it when I achieved it.  I'm glad I didnt bother posted my score earlier.  That score quite frankly seems impossible to me.

List the Joysticks used to make the scores you attained.

Honestly,  without the correct sticks for this game... its nearly
impossible to get very deep into the game.

The best sticks for this game IMOP, are the Original Wico 8 way Leaf
joysticks.  Ive tried with other sticks.. and its game over in 1/10th the time of the Wico's.

I need to get this game working on my MAME - I have wico leafs.

Played at Wade's 2 weeks ago and was getting around 110-120k. He has Sanwas or some other Japanese joysticks in there. No offense to the Jap controls fans, I just find them horrible and cheap feeling.

You suck.  It took me about 35 games to get to 143,000.

I'm using Happ Comps as well.  I dont seem to notice any issues during gameplay.......other than I suck.

How do you check to confirm that you are on default settings? I'm pretty sure I am but I want to double check.

So far today I'm at 164,400. My kid will be home from school soon and has bigger high score than me in the 300k+. Again I want to confirm our difficulty settings, etc.

How do you check to confirm that you are on default settings?

I checked by holding down F1 then hitting F2 twice. Then set "Restore Factory Settings" to YES. It set the difficulty to 3 and don't worry about losing your high scores, it doesn't reset them.

Cool, thanks quarterstringer! Thats the way to get into the settings. Also, search for "change robotron mame settings" and this thread pops up already.  :burgerking:

I apologize in advance.

Coincidentally, I stumbled across the Twin Galaxies world record for Robotron yesterday afternoon. For tournament mode for MAME Level 5, 5 men only (no free men), the record is ~ 595,000. I played about 30 games yesterday, swore like a trooper and ended up with 591,000 points. I thought I had beaten the record since I thought it was only 567,000, panicked and stupidly crashed into an electrode only to find out a minute later I didn't beat it.

I have actually whooped that score in the past, posting 512,000 on my first man. I ended up with about 800,000 after 5 men. This was on level 7 on the arcade version. There was a contest going on to win an all you can play day at the arcade. The contest was set up as who could get the highest score on level 7, 12 men only with no free men.

I ended up with ~ 1,417,000

To make a long story short, your going down.  ;)

I'll set it to level 10 just for kicks. Have you ever tried level 10. It's sick, especially when you do something shifty and get away with murder.

Is that a screenshot?

In a mame32 version...highlight your selection then goto: File > Play and Record Input. This will record your .inp to your specified location...you could then attach it to your post and people with your mame version sould be able to view your entire game.

I just got my personal best 259,875. I got a screen but no inp. My kid couldn't break 200k tonight...

Still can't get into the swing of things - I used to score much higher. However, fired up a couple of games, and just got 320,225.

Hey Ummon - how about posting a top 10 (if we get that many participants) in the original post?

Even with U360s this game just isn't the same in MAME as it is with the real thing, despite the claims that the emulation is now correct.  I average about 800,000 in MAME, with my best score being around 1.5 million.  On my authentic Robotron machine at the same settings I score over 1 million on most decent games with several scores well over that.  I have a friend that can roll the game, so he is no longer allowed to play on my machines :-)  Regardless, this is the best game ever made IMO.  I will try to get a game in tomorrow to submit a score.

We are in total agreement on that. It's a flawless game.
I've never broken 700K, so I won't win this competition. But I'll give it a try this weekend.

I tried and tried to inp and mng. My widescreen prevents me from recording using inp due to a no signal messsage and the mng file cuts short on my one million attempt on level 10/3 men/25,000 per additional man.

The mng file is 150 MB and justs stops at around the 156,000 score, even though I have 6 men left??

So here's the screenshots. You'll just have to believe it. Truth be told, the tank waves were treating me like crap the whole way through. You should try a tank wave on level 10. They can eat up your men in no time if you screw up.

I fogort to mention, I still had 4 men left. Should have had 7 men plus more in memory by this point, but like I said I choked on a few tank waves.

.inp recording is the way to go.  A lot smaller and you can post it here.  Mng files are too big.

Try going to the MARP site for help:

http://marp.retrogames.com/record.htm

But here is a breakdown:
-  place the contents of the zip file attached to this post to your MAME directory.
-  go to the c:\ prompt and navigate to the MAME directory.  To do this in Windows:  Click on Start, Run, type in "cmd" (no quotes) and hit enter.  Type in "cd c:\mame" (no quotes) (or wherever you have mame installed).  The prompt should now be in the mame directory.
-  Type: record robotron (hit enter)  This will automatically record a file named "robotron" to the inp directory.  You can later rename the .inp file to whatever you want when you post it. (give it the .inp extension when you rename it)

You can do the same to playback .inf files:
-  Type: playback robotron robotron (hit enter)
It will automatically play it back.

You must have the EXACT version of MAME to play it back.  So let us know what version you are using.

Hope this helped!

Yeah, Havok, that's a nice idea. I've been using P360s with bat tops for years now. I did play a sort of robotron that I think had some sort of ball tops at a Gameworks and got at least 800k, I think. However, my all-time high is above a million in mame (using my P360s). If the other night is any clue to thing, I bet I'd do better with two U360s fitted with my special restrictor modification. I already have a couple/few scores above 500k since the start of the thread, I've just been lazy in posting. Also note, this version is easier than the yellow/orange label, of which I actually sometimes prefer, but blue is the parent set.

Okay, here's a new score. Default settings is level 3, but I went in and set it to 5 to check it out. I don't know if it was that much harder or what. Oh, I also changed the name entered to allow seven characters. I recorded it, but when I do playback, it says 'ended: out of sync". I dunno. This was on MameUI .128 .

Here's a little better one, though I set the difficulty back to 3.

You should try a tank wave on level 10. They can eat up your men in no time if you screw up.

I tried level 10 today for the first time, and the game is much more intense. I was getting 150,000 most of the time and I finally got one good game in. I don't know if I can challenge your million score, but I plan on keeping level 10 as my default. It's actually more fun because the games are shorter now. :)

Well, not much better. This was on Mame32 .104 .  Recorded this one, too, but it doesn't play right. Hmmmm.

I think those who are going to play non-default settings should be considered a branch-off - I just did mine to test out - it which case it would be best to start a thread on that kind of thing rather than it be part of the comp.

When you compare playing on level 10 vs factory settings, it's like going to work vs a stroll in the park. Put it this way, if you persist at level 10 and improve and then fall back to level 3 or 5, you should be rolling the game in no time. When you can roll the game on level 10/30,000 per free man you're there. Where there is, I'm not quite sure.  ;)

After that, there's always playing one hand each with a buddy. It's a whole new experience. Be the mover, it's more fun. With a good partner on level 5, you can roll the game too.

Do most people play with the left stick moving and right stick firing (default, I think)? I'm just curious if there is a trend with the better players.

Either way, I suck.

I was able to roll the score over 10 million back in the 80's at the miniature golf that had a Robotron. That game let the high scorer put up a 20 character message and I had a rivalry with a friend putting up messages. If you're out there Aaron - "LUDTKE SUCKS"  ;D  After 25+ years my skills have deteriorated and now my scores are only in the 2-3 million range on MAME.

Playing at a higher level is a good way to get better, but you will end up at level 10 eventually anyhow if you get good enough.  I believe the game increases the difficulty level by one at every tank wave, so once you hit that seventh one you should be at level 10 regardless.

Yeah I do it all the time -- ever since I first saw that video.  It's pretty hard to get all the mommies without dying or ending the level too early though.  It's also sometimes difficult to spot the one mikey.  If done right, you should have over 100K at that point.  You can also do that trick on the next brain level (daddies).  It's harder to spot the one daddy that the brains are headed for, but sometimes you can guess and keep him alive and they won't program any others!

Those videos are great!  We actually figured the Mikey trick out back in the day by accident because we always played by the rule that letting Mikey get killed got you a punch in the arm.  When someone was feeling cocky, he would just circle around Mickey and we finally saw the behavior of the brains.

One thing I love about Robotron is that there are no patterns in the game to memorize.  When you get killed, you always see it coming and usually know what got you in that spot in the first place.  A couple of general tips are:

(1) With the tanks and spheroids, the farther you are away from them the faster the bullets come at you.  The general reaction in tank waves and those with lots of hatched spheres is to get away from them.  In reality, getting close to them makes them much easier to handle.  You can circle right around a group of spheroids and never get hit.  In tanks waves where you fail to kill the cubes before the tanks hatch, run right through the middle of the screen and take out as many tanks as you can before getting to a wall and picking off the remainders.

(2) When dealing with spheroids, don't run along the outer wall.  Stay just a bit off of it instead.  The bullets will travel along the walls so you can avoid a lot of them by doing this.

(3) Grunt waves (9,19,29, etc.) are probably the hardest ones because if you die early you will most often lose several more lives quickly after.  When the wave is forming, look up and down and find your best path to the wall.  Get there at all costs as quickly as possible.  Don't worry about picking up people, just get to the wall and then go left or right, whichever way doesn't have a hulk in your way.  If you run a grunt wave, you will get plenty of people near the end to get an extra man or two.

Here is my best for tonight. I did this using a batch file to launch mame and record without mala running so I can get full speed because my arcade box only has 512 meg of ram in it. If you watch the recording you will see how fast I went down the tubes it is pretty funny but one of the brain waves I don't know how I got away without losing a guy.  For joysticks I use U360's and they are awesome. Anyway enjoy.

Proximity relative to speed of enemy fire: I wondered about this but I'm not that methodical in my playing so never pinned it down. I have found a good strategy in getting most of the tanks to be in a vertical line in the center and then I can just slide back and forth and dice 'em.

Proximity relative to degree of enemy fire: I just noticed this last night before reading about it here. I started charging the spheriods and really doing 'em in.

Last month, I watched that 13 million game of the top scorer over at MARP. Insane kung fu there, like watching a bird move its head.

I have to re-aquaint myself with the Mikey bug. I forget how it works.

Anyways, here's a new score for me. Not my all-time highest, but pretty good. I was actually kickin some pretty good ass up till about 800k or so.

The game does get progressively tougher due to the amount of enemies you face as well as the assortment (tanks, brains, grunts, enforcers, hulks) all on the same level. But no way would level 47 (difficulty 5) be anything like even level 7 on difficulty 10.

Perform a test. Let a lot of tanks spawn on level 7 difficulty 10 and then try to fight them off. The balls come at you like rockets. Try the same on a higher level on an easier D.L. and you'll see.

Anyone try the Brain tip he talks about in video 2?

We used to refer to that as "Save Mikey". Completing that wave flawlessly (ie. Completing the wave in one man, saving all humans and saving mikey for last)
was called "A one man wave with style"

We even named a wave 24, 44, 64, 84  etc  (the wave before every Lady Brain wave except for the first one) as Jimmy's wave because every time he played it, he'd say, "I Love this wave".

Bless Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar for this game.  :notworthy:

Nice scores so far! I have only gotten around 525K as my best, but I think I can break 1 million if I just stop making stupid mistakes. I'll get on a roll, and then I lose a guy. and then I always seem to lose 3 or 4 in a row after that. I'm glad we're having this little competition, I am starting to more consistently score better. Last night I played a few games, and got 400K. Hopefully I can get really going by the deadline and see if I can at least score in the top three...

It doesn't work 100% of the time.  There will be mommy waves where a mommy gets programmed right away and all hell breaks loose whether Mikey is still around or not.  That's when you just have to grab what you can and get out of the wave like normal.

Awesome! Robotron is by far my favourite arcade game!

We've got one of those Arcade Legends stand-ups here at work, and I was able to hit the 1,312,300 mark.
The downside to these cabs is that the joysticks are just Happs Competition sticks, with oval tops.  Sometimes in a heated battle, my hand slips off the joystick because of the way I hold the oval-top (as if I were holding a ball-top joystick).

Even when I think about it at the beginning of the wave it seems like this is the case for me regardless. I'd like to see someone clear it like smiley talks of above.

....yeah, I just tried this a few times. One time there was a delay before they started firing, and then they didn't fire as much, but it wasn't not at all.

Even when I think about it at the beginning of the wave it seems like this is the case for me regardless. I'd like to see someone clear it like smiley talks of above.

Are you picking up Mikey? That'll make the brains choose another target for sure.

Sometimes the brains do randomly go after a single Mommy, the key there is to try to recognize what direction they're all going towards, and try to "defend" all the Mommies in that area.  But for the most part, they go after the Mikey's first.  Just try to shoot all the Brains before they get to him, without picking him up!

After playing the last couple of days and gettin' my robotron groove back, I am now hitting 600,000 again, just stupid mistakes keep getting me killed. I'm gonna bust a big score soon, I can feel it.

Brains #2 (with the daddies) screws me up too. I keep running into the blocks that say "2048". I dunno, something about them makes me want to pick them up. AAAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

That reminds me of the time I was watching this guy play on a much later tank wave level. The guy violently tried to maneuver away from a ball blast, slipped off the joystick (a ball joystick, I might add) and sling shotted to the floor at my feet. It was as funny as hell. If your still out there Walkman, thanks for the laugh, the skills you imparted and most of all to keep my feet squarely planted while playing.  ;D

On a good day, I can get to wave 9 (what I like to call the Zombie level - the one where you're surrounded by mainly grunts) without dieing. But as a general rule of thumb, if I can get to 100,000 or over after the first Brain wave, I'm in good shape. (That means utilizing the Mikey trick)

Remember, this game is all about threat assessment.  What's the first thing you should always shoot = Generators.  As long as you can kill the generators before they spawn any baddies, you're all good.

Another tip:  Learn to master the art of Spread fire!  Wiggle the joystick back and forth from a directional quickly, and you can get a decent fast-fire spread shot. More times than not, that saved me a bunch of times from being swarmed.

Tip 3:  On the tank levels, just try to kill as many Generators as you can before they spawn. Don't worry about the family members too much. Oh, and stay away from the walls!

Last tip:  Remember, all enemies that shoot projectiles will shoot slower shots the closer you are to them. So if you're keeping your distance, their shots will be harder to dodge. Try to stay within mid-range!

Hope this helps!
Good luck saving the world from evil robots!

I don't know what they're officially called, but I usually refer to them as missiles. Anyways, best way to defend against and onslaught of missiles is to run away from them while shooting "spread" shots (the technique I mentioned above) towards them.  Basically they'll try to "jump" around your shots when you're firing straight at them, I find the best way to hit them is to shoot a spread quickly in the diagonals as well as the straight shots towards them.

Actually, the first thing I do when the screen is loading, is look for humans, and then enemies and electrodes, and pick a direction. In earlier times, I would do sort of large arcs. Since I've been doubling back more, and sooner than I might have in earliers times, I've been able to totally fake out enforcer hordes emerging in spots behind the gang of drones.

Definitely, the 'zombie' wave is one of the hardest in this fashion because of sheer numbers, and one has to be very precise in shooting what's closest to them, while making very minor adjustments in position while moving along the wall.

Are you picking up Mikey?

No, I didn't. I dunno, it's not a big deal. I don't really get into those kinds of strategies, as the 'practice part' just burns me out.

You're totally right, punch out quick, circle the wall.
It's my favourite level. The best thing to do with that level is to find a line through the crowd, punch out, and get to the wall and start circling around thinning out the crowd while going for the generators. If you can use the "spread shot" you can quickly get a good amount of grunts out of the way. Love it!

Well I tried again tonight, and only scored 244,000 as the top score. I think my joysticks aren't quite "zippy" enough. Are Wico grommets supposed to be stiff when new, or more soft? I might swap em out for a new set.

You should try a "9 Wave Special" some time. What you do is break out any way you want to one of the 4 edges, proceed to one of the corners and then break back through diagonally. Breaking through the grunts a second time can be really ugly sometimes, but fun when done right.

For you last tip, I'd have to agree with you on the enforcers front. The + bullets sometimes curve horendously especially on the lower difficulty levels. I had ones that I thought had gone by curve around and nail me. The tanks blast the balls right into your face no matter where you are. I wouldn't wouldn't get to close to them.

Those stationary electrodes are brilliant. I've crashed into them one too many times. Better off shooting them if you can. Sometimes, I can swear I didn't see it when the going gets tough and suddenly your dead only to realize you crashed into a bloody electrode.

Have you ever noticed what I call "magnetization". It's when your really close to an enemy and suddenly you die as if you got sucked onto it. What is really happening is you were running along "thin" and suddenly became "thick". Ok let me explain. If you are running diagonally, your man appears skinnier or "thin". When you run straight up or down your running "thick". What happens when you are trying to avoid an enemy is you go from being skinny to being wider and it seems as if you were pulled, magnetized to the enemy. Hulks go from one extreme to the other often and you'll noticed this effect more when you run into them. I guess I play the game too much.   :(

And here's my latest Level 10/25,000 per free man score

Here is my best for tonight. I did this using a batch file to launch mame and record without mala running so I can get full speed because my arcade box only has 512 meg of ram in it. If you watch the recording you will see how fast I went down the tubes it is pretty funny but one of the brain waves I don't know how I got away without losing a guy.  For joysticks I use U360's and they are awesome. Anyway enjoy.

what exact version of mame is this .inp file for?

That's a sick score...

One thing I keep seeing is things hiding behind other things, but due to the way the graphics are handled, you end up not seeing the things on the lower layer.  Kind of a flickery black box that covers what's below it until you destroy that enemy.  I don't know if this is a MAME issue, or whether the original did this as well.  I'm using an older version, so it's possible that it's a graphic thing that's since been fixed.

Quote

I never really considered that aspect, but I know exactly what you are referring to.  I think there's a good possibility that this, as well as what I mentioned above, has contributed greatly to my "electrode problem".  I never seem to give them a wide enough berth and kind of see them as a lower threat since they aren't actively trying to kill me.  This complacency is certainly a good part of the problem.

Thanks you RT!

Did you notice I still had a full deck of men lined up. My wife started heckling me for supper, so I pressed pause and the game is still waiting for me. You've got to love that.

As for "things hiding behind other things", this has always been the case. I've never noticed any "black box" effect on the original or any of the mame versions I've played. What version are you running?

And complacency is bad. It's very fast paced and hectic most of the time which means you have to ready and alert all the time.

My record, using Happ supers on MAME is 225,000 ish. My Girlfriend has recently beaten the 100,000 barrier so maybe she will have the top female score.

I'll get screenshots when I get in from work and post the exact figures.

IMHO this is the best videogame of all time. As far as Im concerned nothing comes close. Maybe it has something to do with using the left and right side of the brain at the same time?

Oh yeah, anyone that gets above 300,000 :notworthy:

Maybe it's in my head.  It's an old version of smoothmame .071u2  (ok, stop laughing)  It seems to work well on the machine it lives on, so I tend not to mess with it.  Might be time to upgrade  ;D

Magnetization thing: I think it's something in the code relative to collision detection. Notice how the grunts move in clips? I think it's similar to player movement: if you don't reverse before the next clip - which may be related to how the game refreshes or something - then it's too late, even though you know you hadn't touched it yet, and the frame closes.

9 wave special: recently, I have sometimes taken diagonal directions, especially when charging groups of enforcers, and it has worked to my advantage. Yes, their shots are seekers. The best defence I've found is moving in a very tight quick circle and moving on in another direction from previous. Move in a line and it'll almost always get you.

overlayed objects: this is just how the game is. They're like non-interactive particles that can pass through each other, and you're anti-matter.

pausing the game: sometimes I don't do as well when I come back. Sometimes I do as well or better. If I'm totally relaxed AND up to speed with the rate of the game, I'm golden.

Ummon, I believe collision detection is an additional issue that compounds the problem. Take a good look at the hulk. It is about 1 1/2 times as wide when it is facing you as it is when in side profile. If the code is written so that the bounding rectangle surrounds only the visible part, then it would instantaneously appear that you got sucked onto the hulk if it happens to turn wide all of a sudden. Grunt clipping is especially noticible at higher difficulty settings. Sometimes it appears as though they leap on you.

You actually need to break out twice to perform a 9 wave special and not just diagonally. I need to youtube this move.

I continued my game from the other day on level 10 and ended up with just over 6,000,000 points. I'm getting back in Roboshape.

My all time high score is 12,278 (mame32 0.96 defaults I think).  Go me.

I have my doubts about you score SithMaster. It can't end in an 8.  ;)

In my defense I played the game and then remembered this topic.  By that time I was iffy on the exact number.  Sigh.

Ok here's an mng file for download. What a pain in the neck this was just to show off a 9 wave special. I ended up having to rush getting to a nine wave and in the process hardly picking up any humans just to be able to get in in under 2 minutes. Why does MNGer stop at 2 minutes. Geeeez.

Hope it works.

If it does, note on the 9th wave the way I break out of the grunt pack to the bottom of the screen, proceed into the bottom, right corner and then break through the grunt pack a second time diagonally. It sometimes looks as though the grunts are melting on you as you go through a second time as you tunnel through. This one was ok, but I've seen far nastier ones.

Smiley: well, it doesn't matter too much what it is, as the strategy remains to not get to close. I don't know what to do with that mng file.

By the way, I added wrong so the comp is a day longer than two weeks. I think I'm tapped out, but my score isn't tops anyway. I'll have to look to see who is, though I suggest that person figure out what they want to play next.

(+_+), I think you have the highest score from reading back. What you gonna pick for the next game?

I'm too young  :burgerking: and could only manage about 175,000 at Robotron which was an improvement over my old scores. Alas the game is a few years before my time  :dunno

I just got 15,400.  That's got to be top three, at least.

I don't consider smiley a real competitor in this comp because he's at the MARP level....but whatever. Joust is fine by me.

Del: I won't play it, but you can pick it if you win one.
