Gauntlet Restoration
« on: October 13, 2008, 01:53:47 pm »
My eBay bargain Gauntlet arrived today. Complete with a spare G1 (faulty) and GII (yes!) PCB (working) and the original manual, for £122 I think I did alright.

Unfortunately the monitor is shot, so I am on the look out for a (local) replacement. Shipping to here is joke (and I'm not saying what it cost to get Gauntlet shipped,, though it's not included in the price above as that would be rude).

A list of what needs doing:

1. New monitor
2. New CPO (cos I'm picky), although it is in good nick already.
3. New side art
4. New barrel locks
5. Repair (maybe replace) coin door surround
6. New CPO-top T-Molding (see cig burned pic)
7. Better marquee retention method, shrug.
8. Strip down and clean all controls. they feel a little sluggish although I haven't powered anything up yet.

Some pics below :)

Cheers

Are you a newbie to this? I just want to know if you know what you're talking about when you say "the monitor is shot". If "guns" in it are dead, then yes you are right. If the tube is cracked, then I guess you are still right. If it "just doesn't work", well, it could be repairable and made to look as good as new.  :)

I'm new but the glass neck has physically snapped, I don't think that this is repairable?

Thanks

Only if you replace the tube.  Probably easier to replace the whole unit.

One tip... sell or donate the frame and circuit boards to a fellow hobbyist.

I will be replacing the whole unit. I think. RayB's comment makes me think I need to do more digging. From that I assume it's unlikely I would be able to source a monitor to use the existing frame?

I can also only assume that the neckboard is in good working order. Would the best thing to do be put it up in BST or eBay?

Put it on B/S/T.  Don't know if you'll find anyone local since you're not in the USA, but you might.

Hey, I just scored a Gauntlet as well.
I did a bit better than you because I got mine for $200NZD which is about 70 pounds or about $130usd . Heh.

Oh, mine works too  :P

So, where are you going to get your art etc? Does someone repro this?
Mine has badly faded art. I know there is some art on local arcade so I will use what is there unless I can buy a package.

I don't know what prices in NZ are like, but here, I did well :)

I was either going o scan  it and get it repro'd here or see what I can find. I h aven't done much research yet.

I have sorted a monitor, just waiting on a shipping quote before I take the plunge.

For info, if you're in the UK, Pentranic have gone bust. I didn't see it reported on here but while their site is still very live, they went under 6 weeks ago. I spoke to the Sales Director today

Cheers

Mate, you did very well with the price.
Gauntlet is a Holy Grail to a lot of collectors and would be in the top 10 for many.
We both got an absolute bargain!

I am happy that someone else is doing one at the same time so we can exchange links etc.
If I decide to replace the tube and monitor chassis in mine I will just go with a TV tube and a universal chassis. Nice and simple.

Well I got my shipping quote and I'm going to do it asap.

I haven't made much progress but the art on localarcade looks workable to me which means I can get it done locally.

I think I'll be asking for more assistnce from you than you me - I haven't even powered it up yet. No time.

I agree about the HG thing, to me it's something I've always wanted, but always sucked at on single player. Still it's all mine now heh :)

I don't think anyone has done a silkscreen of the art, but you can get inkjet versions from ArcadeOverlays.

I have a Gauntlet I have been restoring, and getting the original controllers to work right is a bit of an issue.  I love the look and feel of the original Atari sticks.  These sticks have mostly plastic innards, and unfortunately taking them apart for cleaning (which is a lot of work) probably won't get the job done.  I tried a cleaning/lube job on my set and it didn't help that much.  The plastic in these things wears away over time.   If the sticks are loose, or if they are catching, you probably may need to buy some new plungers for them.  The only source I know of is:

http://www.videogameparts.com/product.sc?categoryId=66&productId=356

At $15 a pop, they aren't cheap.  You will need some roll pin punches if you plan on taking the joysticks apart..  The site also sells the pivot ball, but I don't think these get much wear.

Thanks for the info 88mph, I will look into it once I get the monitor sorted.

I have just ordered a monitor off eBay, £160 delivered from the states. So I have some stupid questions (but I did ask the seller if it would work... he said yeah).

Will I have to use a step-down transformer (ie will the monitor be 110v)?
Will I have any 50/60hz issues?
The monitor comes without metal frame. Is this a big issue or did I do the right thing?
Have I just wasted £160?

Cheers

My monitor arrived this morning, but I am out of my depth I think.

Firstly, I think I've been sent a 20" monitor (it's got 51 in the part number). Secoondly, the PCB that came with it has a part number MG220something which I am inclined to believe is 220V. Indeed, the smoothing cap is a 220uf 400V cap. Can I damage anything by underfeeding it?

There are loads of wires and I can't find / don't know where they are supposed to go. It is not obvious at all :(

Can anyone help?

Ok, I got everything connected, but forgot the degaussing coil. So my colours are a mess towards the top of the screen.

I have other issues with it though:

Can you post a pic of the whole screen? Looks like your brightness is a little high for starters...

ya, I fixed the brightness prob. I had the brightness pot turned right down - but the voltage? pot near the hvt was high.

I'm still getting the tearing of the lettering, but my blacks are black now. I also adjusted the focus, which improved it some, but it's still not great. I don't have a pic of the full screen, if you still want one, pls ask :)

Nah I don't need one anymore. I just wanted to see those lines to see if it was brightness related and it was. Have you taken this problem to the monitor forum?

I think I have realised the solution to my stupidness, so will try it out later.

Once I know the monitor is sound (I'm sure it is now), I can start the restore proper.

Does anyone have any experience with Arcadeoverlays? I appreciate it's not silk screened, and am a little worried about banding from the printing process. I also noticed that the CPO on my machine is actually GII.

And I'm going to need help on the coin mechs. Is it possible to change them to take different coins / tokens etc. It has to be I just don't know how...
