EXACTLY! Waffles are far superior because when made right, they crisp up a bit which allows them to hold the syrup and butter that is placed on top without getting mushy and soggy like a pancake does. (Take a pancake and put your butter and syrup on, and in a matter of seconds it has become mushy, soggy, and basically digested).
With a waffle, you can put any topping you want on there and the waffle itself will hold up. Your imagination is your limit as to what you can do. With pancakes, you are limited by the physical properties of the material.
As for Begian Waffles, no "Belgian Waffle" you're going to find outside of Belgium will even come close. I have no idea how they can do it but when I spent a week in Brussles on a business trip, I ate them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They had the waffle stands on every corner, on every block, and in every place you could imagine. It was like the food carts you see around NYC. They were cheap, enormous, and so incredibly tasty. They would roll them up into a cone like shape surround by paper so it was easy to eat while you walked. They would then put the toppings in there and it was like food from heaven. I am so thankfull that I got the chance to go to Brussels and enjoy that fantastic meal. (The pomfrittes were also good as a huge tub of french fries and mussels is a nice meal). ;D

they're POFFERTJES, like it says in the bit you quoted, and they are very nice

Sorry about that. I understand that they are Poffertjes, but what's in them? What do they taste like? And where do I find some!!! :P

You can find recipes for poffertjes on the innernetz, but I guess without a special pan it will be hard to get them actually done and into the right shape.
:edit: Actually this recipe claims you can make them without a special pan. It says to use two types of flour. Guess that's the original way of doing it, but I use only plain and that works fine.
The freak also puts whipped cream and strawberries on them (that's probably because the recipe was written by a woman). A real man eats poffertjes with proper butter and powdered sugar (as in the pictures above)
