Pacman Paint Touchup????
« on: September 03, 2008, 05:34:03 pm »
Does anyone have any ideas on how to touchup this cabinet without it looking too obvious?

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks!

I thought that pr0k had a page on painting, but he seems to have reorganized his site.

You might check Marvin's pages for some tips:

Sand around everything but the artwork.

Fill in nicks and scratches/scuffs with bondo.

Color match the paint up @ Lowes/Home Depot.

Repaint around the ARTWORK carefully with a Foam Roller.

Use a foam brush, To dab here and there where needed.

If you need the color codes?

For the Red and Blue of the artwork.

I have my old paint cans still.

I had them matched too.

Using this method.

I went from Before to After with these set of pix.

You are going to have to do some freehand painting with the PAC-MAN logo on the side.

Great work and idea Buckethead!
If you still have the codes available I would surely appreciate it!

Thanks again!

One other thing. What about the blue speckles in the yellow paint? Just don't worry about them?
I read on a website a guy used a bicycle pump with a plastic nozzle on the end and shot blue paint through it to get the speckle affect. Should I not worry about the blue speckles?

There are two versions of the cabinet out there.

The one with the blue speckles being the later. (I Think?)

Don't hold me to that.

Mine did not have the speckles.

You can get the blue speckles, Also by pulling a paint brush back and gently letting it go. (Know what i mean?)

I will get the codes 4 ya!

The cans are outside, I will dig them out tomorrow.

(PM) Me in case i forget!

I will get the codes 4 ya!

Do the paint codes have the paint base in there as well? I seem to recall that different bases made for subtle changes in the final color.

Also another tip.

I used a Black Sharpie, To Bring back the PAC-MAN logo.

And alot of those swoosh lines around it.

Can't tell the difference!

I get that splatter effect by drilling out the nozzle to a spray paint can a little bigger. You'd have to cover the artwork. Practice on scrap wood first to get the distance. I spray it in short bursts. I did a shuffle alley like that and it looked great when it was finished.

I was able to get over to lowes this weekend and they converted the paint codes you gave me into quarts. The yellow is very close match  I have not gotten the red or blue yet. I was so excited! I touched up the areas on the cabinet with the yellow and began using the sharpie to outline the pacman graphics and swoosh marks. It looks AWESOME!
I will post a couple of pics soon. Thanks again BucketHead. I am definately making progress thanks to your help.

That's an interesting idea !

I have a Pac project that I was trying to save the art on (sadly, the combination of multiple layers of gray and black, in both oil and latex, along with primer made it impossible) and have a set of vinyl sideart that I plan to use. Problem is that it's an 'oops' printing -- purple instead of blue for the ghost.

I decided I liked the purple (it's the uber-R@RE, Pr0ToType Purple Ghost version!) and was thinking about purple splatters.

Thanks.

Oh god... please don't use the Lowe's paint.  Take the codes to a paint store.  Or even a hardware store for Pac's sake... but don't use the box store watered down garbage.  You'll regret it.

Are any of them yellow?  I used the Lowe's house brand on my son's room (yellow).  Even over white primer it took like 8 coats just to get to the point that you couldn't see the primer anymore.  The blue we used for my other son's room was better but not much.

You will get 10 different opinions on any brand of paint. I've had that same experience with Behr paint. I've never had a problem with Olympic, or even Enterprise(Lowes brand).

In general, though, the opinions are pretty consistent on the house brands at both HD and Lowe's.  Even with mixed opinions you certainly wouldn't a given paint on a cab.

All painted with Lowes.

I have no regrets.

Maybe you just had a Bad Experience?

Who knows?

5 of 5 bad gallons.  Yeah, I'm stupid enough to have done it three times (two purchases were of more than one gallon).

Sorry dude!   :dizzy:

You know? You can have the primer tinted to the color paint you are using.

Did you try that?

Or did you leave the primer white?

If not?

I think on the 3rd Bad Gallon, I would have been talkin to the Manager, Or drove on down to Sherwin.

White primer, but having used that brand of primer (Kilz) for years and never having had an issue, didn't bother having it tinted.  And I've been using that brand of primer since with other brands of paint without any issues as well.

Could easily be that there's some issue with the local dept at our local store but who would try it a fourth time when the dedicated paint store a mile away has much better paint?

I understand.

I use Kilz on all my cabinets!

I love it!

However, I did have to use alot of coats of RED on my DK.

But i had no problems with the PAC, GALAGA or TRON.
