Retrothing Arcade
severdhed:
i kinda like it. clearly it's not for everyone, but it has a unique style that works. The whole point of this site was to "build your own arcade controls" so naturally not everyone has teh same idea of what they want.
i like it

Wow, I didn't know it was Blanka's.This forum sure can be fickle.
Personally I love it, but you need the retro pad to house it.
I put it in my blog earlier. http://www.arcade-lounge.co.uk/?p=279.
Great work Blanka

It's OK. To each their own I guess. I like how it's thinner than your standard cab. I've been looking at thin designs for a while.
What puts me off is the idea that it looks retro and the subtle comparison to Computer Space. I realize it's an more of an homage, but still....
I have a few design magazines from the 70s and the look is really different back then. It's amazing that a lot of designs haven't changed (I recognized over a third of the tub designs in the magazines as ones you can actually still order at chain stores like Home Depot and Lowes. Thankfully, the silly French tub is no longer available. :P ). Anyhow, my point is, some of the styles back then were really radical, the CS cabinet being one of them. To me, the CS cabinet is most assuradly from the 70's and looks right at home in something like a Logan's Run decor.
This cab, to me, doesn't look retro. It has some of the stylistic elements from other cabinets (I don't see where it gets anything from CS though). Like the bathtub example, some styles simply refuse to die because they're what works and what people like. So it's only natural to see some stylistic elements in a new cabinet.

I actually really like it. It looks very retro but modern at the same time. Plus I like the history behind it, following the first arcade cab. How many people knew that!? I know I didn't!
Hats off to you Blanka!
My only criticism is the plain CP as it isnt my taste personally, but it does follow the original theme you planned so can't complain!
All in all I think this is a nice, innovative design and example!
