Mine is set to:

  1 2 3
  4 5 6
7

That way the Street fighter games work right out of the box.

Then I just reprogrammed all neo-geo games (global) in my ini file so that I don't have to do each individually.

7 4 5 6 = A B C D

I'm working on a tutorial on how to do this that is easy to understand... I've just been so busy lately I haven't had time to get it written.

I don't fully understand you.  You set your frontend's ini file for your neo-geo emulator to behave that way?  If so, what frontend\emulator are you using.  I'm running mameWAH and Fusion, but haven't gotten around to manually programming buttons for the neo-geo yet although I did peek at the Fusion's ini file (seemed a tad confusing).

I also didn't realize until this thread that the neo-geo has a seventh button per player.  It feels like a glaring omission on my cp now.  Is this a huge deal, or do only select games use it?  The computer inside my cab isn't the greatest, so I'm having to skip most advanced fighting games anyhow.
Ginsu Victim:
First off, he wasn't talking about a frontend INI, he was talking about MAME.

Second, you don't need seven buttons for Neo Geo. You only need four. The original layout of the Neo Geo style is mimicked by his use of

  4 5 6
7

The seventh button is only there to add the Neo Geo layout. It is not needed for all CPs.

Mine is actually backward. I have:

4 5 6
1 2 3
        7

OK, that makes sense.  It's painfully obvious I've never owned or played a neogeo game, plus I made the mistake of confusing saying I was using Fusion for neogeo games.  That entire last post of mine was very poorly thought out.
