I busted out with the rustoleum. It already had texture so it didn't need any more. It just needed a different color.
Powder coating sounds like more time and money than it's worth. Spray paint is like $3 and it's not like it has to survive WW3. When was the last time you spray painted something and it went to hell just sitting there in your house.
You obviously don't have small kids!
But what I did on my own coin door (which came out far, far better than I thought it would) was completely strip the door of parts. I took the metal pieces and scrubbed it down with a brush and dish detergent, rinsed, and toweled dry. I lay it down and let it dry for an hour.
Next, I gave the door a light coating of gloss black Rustoleum, followed by two more to brighten it up. Since the door was already in really good shape, I didn't need to take this down to the metal. Followed up by baking in the oven @ 175 degrees for an hour.
I cleaned the mechs, and gave them a treatment of WD-40. Took the eject mech apart, and cleaned the 20 years of finger good off with some degreaser.
I only wish I'd taken some before, during and after pics.
