Direct3D option in MAME Options
« on: August 02, 2008, 06:37:05 am »
For some reason, the Direct3D option ("use Direct3D") doesn't stay ticked in my version of MALA (the latest).

I've just switched from MAMEWAH (which gave me several good years of service) and I'm extremely impressed with the options and ease of use.

I have Direct3D-enabled within Windows (DXDIAG confirms), and I believe MAME is actually using it (D3D is "on" in MAME.ini), so does it matter? The DirectDraw box in MALA is always ticked...

I don't even have to do anything else - untick the Direct3D box in the MAME options, go straight back in, and its unticked again...

I haven't seen any other posts with this problem.

The MaLa (mame.ini) editor was created for an older version (like .79) so things have changed sice then.

So the answer is to edit mame.ini with notepad for the few options not covered or broken

I have the same problem with the latest Mame.  Is a amame.ini description available anywhere?

I have the latest Mame and latest Mala (DLed 2 days ago).

Is there a mame configuration editor out there?

EDIT: My N64 emulator (project 64) also gave me grief.  That was fixed by dropping the color depth to 16 bit from 32 bit.  Mame still does not work with D3D but it now gives a different error.

To turn direct3d on, do I need to turn on or off any other features in the ini file?

you should delete your ini file
open mala, choose your mame executable and mala will ask you to create a new ini file
choose yes and direct3d will be enabled by default

Mala is just calling Mame -cc

Mame -cc creates an ini file with direct3d set by default.  And on my box, for some reason, Mame is not working in direct3D mode.  Only direct draw works.

I have Windows XP with the latest SP and all patches (auto update)

It's a voodoo 3 with it's latest drivers.

DirectX is atleast V9 (ran the direct X utlity to find out)

1 gig of memory (2 x 512M PC2700 not dual channel) and a P4.

then voodoo 3 is your problem
its very outdated card with problematic xp drivers and will not work well with directx9
my opinion is to change it with some other card, not expensive, just more recent than voodoo
even a geforce fx5200 or 6200 or a radeon 9xxx will do the job

AHHHH!

Figures.  The onboard video (circa 2004 or 2005) is sufficient for d3d support.  I feel kinda stupid.
