**2008 BYOAC Token FRONT SIDE Design Thread**
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:38:03 pm »
This thread is for the design discussions and proposals regarding the FRONT side of the 2008 BYOAC token.

We are designing  .984" (25mm) tokens.  So that all entries are judged equally, submissions should be in grayscale only, without bling. (Bling refers to color, photorealistic renderings. If we get a volunteer to bling all entries at the end equally, we can do that.)  White should indicate the lowest point of the token, black the highest.  If you want to show partial-height details use shades of gray, Different levels of gray are OK.  Of interest as you design,  the 'lowest' or 'deepest' point on the token will usually be shiny because it doesn't require machining.

So that those of us who are not Photoshop Gurus are given a fair shot , no 'blinged' renderings should be posted.

Guidelines/Rules
-No R-Rated material
-No trademarked or copyrighted images. (Pacman, etc...)
-MAME references are OK though, we have approval to use the logo if we like as long as we respect the spirit of MAME - i.e. no references to playing thousands of games, etc.
-No Bling - refer to the 2004 thread below to see how blinged line art turns out.
-Should display "Build Your Own Arcade Controls" (or at least "BYOAC") and the www.arcadecontrols.com URL   because BYOAC is the whole point of the tokens.
-If at all possible you should have your art in vector format. (Adobe Illustrator AI for example.)  Next best is very high-res raster (Hi-res meaning greater than or equal to 300DPI,) but I discourage it because we have always used vector with superb results.  Low-res artwork won't work, you will need to have someone fix it up for you.
-Vector fonts need to be converted to curves.
- .002" is the absolute minimum line width.  While lines can be reproduced at this scale, text may not be readable for being too small.
-The 'lowest' or 'deepest' point on the token will usually be shiny because it doesn't require machining.

If you are submitting what you consider your final proposal, please say so in your post. Otherwise we will assume you are submitting it for group discussion and tweaking.

This is a good sample from 2004:

Here are previous years' threads for reference.
2007 Back
2006 Front
2006 Back
2005 Front
2005 Back
2004 combined thread

Final Designs must be submitted to this thread no later than August 24, Midnight Eastern Standard Time.  This is a strict deadline so that we don't wind up delivering the tokens in December like last year.

After that date I will create voting threads with the final entries.

Been eagerly awaiting the 2008 design comp. It's always great to see the incredible stuff this bunch comes up with.
As with previous years, I'm in for 200 as long as they're half decent, so get designing people. Whoohoo.

I like the background with the repeated BYOAC but the picture is terrible. Took me a while to actually figure out what it was, perhaps if you spin it around and lower the viewpoint so we're looking more from behind the player?

I think it looks cool. I like that you look at it for a bit, and it has that ah ha! kind of moment. Much like playing games of the 80's.

Vorghagen, don't make us all suffer because someone creates a design too clever for you to understand.

Too clever? He did figure it out. It was tough for me to figure out at first too. Regardless, I don't particularly care for it, other than the background which I like.

OK. Sorry, my bad.
I could have phrased that a little better. I don't mean to be outright mean in criticising her design, especially since my own design skills are near zero, just trying to be constructive. I said what I liked, what I didn't like, why I didn't like it and what I thought might make it better. Isn't that the whole point of "group discussion and tweaking"?

Sez, my sincere apologies if I offended you. I really do appreciate people willing to design the tokens for byoac and hope that you will continue to do so. I will try to be more subtle in future.

I'm no artist either, but like I said, I do like the background - I'd love to see it end up on a token. So definitely a positive contribution! :)

Let's try again.  Got four examples of a similar style - some lighter, some darker.

These are also open to discussion and/or tweaking.  Let me know which you prefer (if any).

Like the last design shown, with the guy in black (highest point on the token). I quite like the prospect of a 'Matrix' style lettering effect though, like the green Matrix code you see on the films. Perhaps you could replicate that effect, with the BYOAC lettering?

Another vote for #4. Great design.
I like the idea in #1 of having the picture a kind of watermark behind the writing but I'm not sure if it'd work too well on a token.
Love the design of the player too, the kind that really gets into the game they're playing moving their body as much as the joysticks.

That matrix lettering idea that turnarcades suggested sounds pretty good too.

The Matrix idea is way too played out...

The style Sez first made me think of the Time Out tokens.

The main reason Mr. C's token was such a big hit was the vintage aspect of it and had the mechanical feel of the token pushers found in 80's arcades. If we are playing the games of our past, we need to keep a dated feel to the coins. Perhaps a more 80's feel this time. Using the Matrix idea gives it too much a late 90's/early 2000's feel...

I'm torn between the fonts. The first has that wonderful retro feel while the second flows better and is easier to read. The dot matrix, while quite interesting, seems to chop up the text too much. Thoughts?

Sez.

I love the new design with the side of the cab.

For the background, which is sweet, the pattern is broken by the first letters on the left. Could you make it so that B Y O A C is always in order? (So there's never YYOAC and OYOAC and AYOAC etc.)  Go ahead and start the middle five rows with B Y O A and C, but make sure the next letter is the next in that series.  And put the first letter of each row back to Black, that was cool :)

Code: [Select]
    B Y O A C B
  B Y O A C B Y O
B Y O A C B Y O A C
Y O A C B Y O A C B
O A C B Y O A C B Y
A C B Y O A C B Y O
C B Y O A C B Y O A
  Y O A C B Y O A
    A C B Y O A

The main reason Mr. C's token was such a big hit was the vintage aspect of it and had the mechanical feel of the token pushers found in 80's arcades. If we are playing the games of our past, we need to keep a dated feel to the coins. Perhaps a more 80's feel this time. Using the Matrix idea gives it too much a late 90's/early 2000's feel...

You know...Mission, this just sparked an idea. How about some Repro tokens Sanotoro? I would love a set of minty Time Out tokens from the 80's.

Since they're long out of business...I would imagine you could do it no?  ??? ;D
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

I'm confused.  Somehow I had the idea we only got 3 layers or different depths on the coin -- is that not true?  Santoro mentions allowing multiple shades of gray in the coin???

No limits that I am aware of.   I wouldn't go nuts however.

edit: Clarification... They must be discrete levels of gray.  You can't design true 3d objects because the Mint will want to charge 'coin' rates which are out of my reach.

Another attempt at making a front for jfunk's 'army of 1ups'.  Probably we'd have to modify one or the other to have the same 'outer ring' design.  I tried, but I don't have the skills.

You got some pretty good token designs there, Fatfingers. Personally I like the one with BYOAC written straight, without the religious looking variations.
The way that 1up is standing made me think of having those men spell out BYOAC in the same way cheerleaders do, or the village people during YMCA. Anyone care to give that a shot?

I made this design too... it only has one side, and it's hopefully it is not breaking the "copyright" rule... because it stinks of pacman... but that was kind of the point.

I also liked FatFinger's joystick one, and made my own... It's got a long way to go, but if it inspires someone, it was worth it!

Something I've been wondering, seeing that some of the designs have a high level of detail... How well will tiny details transfer to an actual token?

I really like the Army of Cabinets design so far.

Here are some suggestions:
- Each cabinet should be unique in some way.  Whether it is the controls, artwork, design, etc.
- A few of the upright cabinets could be replaced with other games like a pinball machine or a cocktail.
- The background needs something.  Example: carpet with a space theme.
- The BYOAC logo is a tad too bold and it is covering up some of the cabinets.

Keep up good work!

Yeah, I like xbakesx' art but the slogan needs to change.  And maybe the 2008 to normal text rather than fading into perspective like that.

I'll keep working on a new slogan.  If you've got one you like let me know!

Maybe the 2008 should be just one depth and lighter so it looks more like it's on the floor?

Busy day at work...

The second one is in case the slogan is so gut wrenching that you need it to be blank to put your own thoughts there  :)

LOVE this design! Absolutely fantastic! I think it would be awesome with Chad's suggested slogan of

 or something similar.

AAAARRRRRRGH.

Out of time. Please understand this is rough. I would still need to add tools to the tool belt, redraw the measuring tape, add byoac to the swimsuit etc. And of course vectorize the whole thing since this is still a pencil sketch compiled from a bunch of different drafts in an attempt to save precious time.

Ran out of time doing the matching (and appropriately designed "tails") side.

Guess there's no pleading for an extension.... :'(

I'm with Chad on both points. I love the design (I loved this design http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=6164.0 if anyone remembers it) but it may limit the potential market. Something almost exactly the same but with Lara Croft style shorts might be in order?

There is a difference, as a parent, between preventing exposure and actively supplying such things.  They see them outside and that's life.  This does not mean their father should be handing the same level of materials to them in the home.  It is not about restriction.

I wholeheartedly agree. Love the token design, and it would be fine if just for me. But my 6 year old is at least as much of an arcade addict as I am, and he has entered the phase of being fascinated by women (especially when scantily clad), kissing, etc. I'm certainly not going to do anything to prod that along in him at such an early age!

I really like the Lara Croft shorts idea. May also help add to the tool belt concept. The swimsuit was feeling a bit out of place in the arcade anyway. That'd be a nice solution. Santoro.... is it worth putting something together like that or has time run out?

I also sympathize on the wife and kids comment. I was trying to keep the design no sexier than Dragon's Lair or Space Ace while maintaining a sort of "calendar" feel (without which it felt strange to have a girl on the token  ::) ) So I agree putting some shorts on her would certainly help and I don't think it would necessarily detract from the... uhhh... playfulness of it.

That said, my six year old daughter picked up the sketch I was making for the front and her eyes popped out and she gasped: Whooooooooah. Is that me? Is that Wonder Woman?? WOW Daddy. Who IS that? Of course I should have said it's mommy.

Alright, here's the deal.  I am busy as all hell with my job and working on a few new business pursuits. As such I won't be able to manage the polls in the next week or so anyway.

I know I said I won't extend the deadline, but at this point there is no harm, so what the heck.  Let's go two more weeks. I will also send PMs to all the previous winners to be sure they see the threads.

(That is a courtesy I probably should have thought of at the beginning.  Sorry Pixel.)

Also - my 2 cents on the curvy woman.   I like curvy women.  :)

That said, I think that there are going to be a significant number of households where the design is racy enough to put off potential buyers.  Every year so far we just eke out enough demand for a full run of tokens and I don't think we can afford to alienate even 10% of the potential buyers or their wives.

I do think a tasteful but sexy woman is possible, and if anyone can do it - Pixelhugger can.

Been busy, sorry about that....

I think we've got all the design concepts we are going to get, so no new entries will be accepted.   I would ask everyone that submitted something to spend the next week getting your 'final' design ready and post it here.  If the last one you posted IS the final one, please say so.

Ouch this was painful to vectorize and keep the details big enough.

Background (carpet and "sky") would be stippled to give the image lots of depth.

Everything will be more clearly visible. The detail resolved on the coin is far greater than what the screen resolves. You definitely should not judge visibility from the file at it's attached size.

That said... you won't see any further down the legs.. ie to the feet.

I doubt it was meant as a criticism. It's a good point though. In fact, when I started considering tokens at the beginning of this year my first thought was "I should probably wait for the 2008 tokens because they're probably coming out any time now". I think with it being an end of the year project, it makes more sense to date it for the following year. So while labeling them 2008 wouldn't prevent me from buying them, I would rather see them labeled 2009.

That would cause there to be no 2008 tokens.  Remember that they go back a few years.  No one wants a gap!   :)

Too true. I have a single token from each year so far mounted on my bezel with room for plenty more... I'd quickly get sick of explaining to people why there is a year missing.

Maybe we could do TWO of these designs... label one as 2008 and one as 2009... since most of the issue tends to be with artwork and we have several great ready to go designs in hand here.  That would give you a major jump on 2009 as well.  It's not like the designs themselves have any direct connection to the year we mint them.

I realize that some people would be upset by that (not me), and I can understand it, but 2009 is almost half over. Since I imagine Santoro's not exactly getting rich off of this endeavor, wouldn't doing these as 2008 tokens basically result in all subsequent years being similarly late as well due to the amount of time it takes to break even on a run?

I know it would probably be a headache but I think it will suck if a year is skipped in making these.

If it were just the headache, I'd do two runs anyway.

In the peak economic times we had a hard time getting enough demand for a full run of 10,000.  We would never get demand today for 20,000 tokens at $50 for 200.  That is pricing from 2 years ago, I will bet brass prices are way up, I may not be able to offer that pricing this year.

We can call these what we want - 2008/9, or we can omit the date completely... I am open to suggestions.

I wouldn't call that integral. Replace "2008" with another "BYOAC" and your front and back designs would look just as good, IMO.

OK OK.... Let's get this going again.

Here's what I have for the front.  Please let me know of any errors - or if you'd rather move to the back thread.

(sez - I don't think the mint can do gradients... want to try this one without?

Santoro, I would forget the one above, ie "one token to rule them all".

The ones attached (brought forward from post #7) are the ones I would prefer to submit.

Thanks
Sez.

Huh, I suppose so. Would keep it nice and symmetrical (I've got a weird thing about symmetry going right now).

It's called O.C.D.

Welcome to my world. Symmetry is my #1 issue with everything.

FYI, there is an article in the newest Gameroom Magazine stating that the big amusement centers are switching to plated zinc coins to cut cost. Is this an option to keep cost down at your coin maker? The article says existing standard brass coin presses can still be used.

I think this needs a lot more than a bump to get going again. As you put it........    He's dead, Jim.
Never argue with an idiot, he'll just drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Yeah, perhaps I should switch those around.

I don't see this going much further. It's a shame, made such great strides just to stall out again.
