Alpha Slider
« on: July 02, 2008, 08:36:39 pm »
Chris,

I know it was discussed a while ago (1 year maybe), but was curious if you have done any work on adding an Alphabet Slider for those that have big music collections?

Thanks...

Part of the code is in place but it's not complete yet.

If I can provide any help or beta testing, let me know.  I'd be happy to do it.

If this ever gets a guernsey in the as-yet-to-be-coded future new version of wincab (and it would be supremely handy for those of us that drive large collections through wincab) can I also ressurrect the dicussion about having alpha jumps go (in my opinion) to the correct page?

topic link : http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=73003.0

i.e. I would like to see a jump to the S artists go to the page that has the FIRST S artist alphabetically (even if half of the page is filled with the last of the R artists) rather than go to the first page that BEGINS with an S artist.

Now...back to testing out the current version to see if my page-flipping woes has disappeared.

My plan is to add a "slider" object that can be attached to multiple things.  I'm thinking of allowing it to be attached to volume control, letter position, or page number.. hmm... are there any other features that can benefit from such a change?

For that matter, if I allow a slider to be attached to anything a button can do, they just become "slide switches" which could be coolfor some skins.

Make it happen man....

I need that Alpha Slider.  It takes me like 2 minutes to get through a letter and about 10 minutes to get through the various artists...

Are you using the BTN_PREVALPHA and BTN_NEXTALPHA buttons in the meantime?

With the latest version you can simulate a slider, actually.  If you use a numeric skin, you can set up a row of 27 small buttons in a row on top of a slider graphic, or just label them with "0-9", then A through Z.  Map the first button to BTN_FIRSTPAGE and each of the others to BTN_A through BTN_Z.  Clicking these buttons will jump you right to that letter.

I was not aware of that....

I will try it.  If it works, I will post the skin here.

Thanks,

I wasn't aware of that either... whilst I haven't time at the moment to even contemplate creating a skin to incorporate these "buttons", last night I did go and set BTN_A through BTN_Z (with the exception of BTN_P because I universally have that key marked as PAUSE on my cabinet) just to see what would happen.

Interesting to note that buttons A through M (and maybe to O... I'll have another look tonight) all jump to roughly the right page but R, S, T etc. didn't seem to function at all.

This was done in a quick 5-minute test at some stupid time last night so I'll have another more in-depth crack in the next couple of days to confirm.

Modification after a little searching

Ah, I see this might have arisen before since I found the following posts.

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=69962.0

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=64151.0

Hmmm... Methinks I need to check the skin and think about a few things.

Do you have the remaining alpha buttons mapped in CONTROLS.INI?  They are not mapped by default.

Yep... mapped all of BTN_A thru BTN_Z to A...Z respectively...

EXCEPT...

However, since BTN_P was assigned to BTN_PAUSE I have not yet assigned anything to be a P. Not sure what you're doing with your indexing (or what tricks are inside the skin I use) but are you perhaps suggesting that assigning any other control to be a P on the right-hand side of the equation will 'complete" the alphabetic set and allow it to function?

i.e. the first non-assigned alphabetic button is assumed to be the "end" of some letter array required for cabinet input?

Ah... I see the "problem"...

I predominatly run the skin cd6-1-ws since my collection is mainly grouped into "albums" by artist (I set the Album name to be the artist name) and I want to cram 6 "albums" onto my 1920x1200 widescreen.

However I also have next/prev skins set up so that I can flick to 2 other "old world" jukebox skins if the mood takes me. So in jukebox.ini I have:

Skin1-cd6-1-ws
Skin2=wurly
Skin3=OrangeBox

If I shift to Skin3 then the paging is correct (although I still don't like the fact that it doesn't go to the first page that contains an artist starting with that letter which may usually be one page back from where it does go - the first page that STARTS with that artist's letter)

Knowing that now I altered the order to be:

Skin1=wurly
Skin2=OrangeBox
Skin3-cd6-1-ws

(since it appears to use the last skin to generate the pointers in jukebox.db/iwx etc.) and all is okay for the skin I predominantly use after the jukebox updates itself upon execution.... of course that means that I must skip to that skin upon startup each time.

I guess I'll have to use skins of the same "paging type" (the other two are titlestrip interfaces more attuned to "singles" jukeboxes) if I want it to work okay across all skins or possibly have multiple instances of wincab/databases and forgo the skin switching inside the program.

For this weekend's poker match I'll just go back to using the single skin of my choice in jukebox.ini and remove Skin2 and Skin3.

No, something's wrong there.  It shouldn't even look at any skin other than the current one.

I discovered a serious bug in the alpha jump last night while trying to troubleshoot this.. if you skip to a letter past any letter of artist that you have, the jukebox will lock up, and if you have debug logging on it'll just grow the debug file rapidly until it's killed.

Whoah... well I guess I was spared that since I have an artists for each letter... even though X doesn't get a full page to itself and doesn't lay on the right boundary, it still jumps to the Y page one past where I beleive it should rightly go. So the cd6-1-ws seemed to work as planned.

Skin-flipping to the "wurly" shot the alpha jump down in flames since it relies on letters A thru J (I think) being used for the interface.

From my memory of last night, further skin-flipping to the "OrangeBox" skin had alpha jumps A through G (I think) work alright. H through S(?) all strangely went to the same place.... somewhere towards the end of the G section (i.e. not anywhere near a letter boundary) yet T through Z seemed to function okay again to their appropriate places.

Throw any tests you'd like me to do at me Chris (or any files/logs you'd like me to supply) and any new beta versions you want me to test.

I have a pure numeric version of Wurly I will be posting soon.  I'll fix the "one page too far" bug when I fix the other issue tonight.

I finished my Alpha Slider.  It works good except there seems to be a bug after "Various Artists" discs.  Pushing "W" took me to a "Various Artist" page as did "V", but pressing "X", "Y" or "Z" causes the entire program to lock up.  I thought it might be because I didn't have that letter, but when I press "Q" of which I did not have any albums, it just went to the "P" pages.

That did not work at all.  In the last version it was exactly right up until "Various Artists".  This version doesn't match up at all.

Yes, I'd like to see it...

I'm working out some last kinks for a full release, but if you want to test the alpha jump changes, I put a beta up at http://www.dwjukebox.com/releases/dwj30301beta.zip .  It's just the wincab.exe executable.

Chris,

Drop a note when you post the update for the bug fix...

P.S. The beta looks like it works....

Yes, I did (see the P.S. in the post above).  It looks like the code works correctly.

The only caveat I would add is that it would be nice if 1st disc from the letter pressed showed up in the far left.  With the beta version it seems the 1st disc can end up in any of the 4 slots.  This might be distracting for a user when he/she pushes the "C" button and then sees "B" discs as the 1st discs to appear.  This, however, is a huge upgrade over having to cycle through letter by letter.

Thanks again.

 :laugh:

Downloaded the beta and had a little play. Worked as I originally expected by using the letters on my keyboard. (I'm using album sort but for me that's equivalent to artist anyway)

Thought I had a "glitch" when using the joystick to do NEXT_ALPHA jumps when in Q and it seemed to stay Q but I haven't been able to replicate so it was probably me moving down/up (prev/next_page) instead of left/right (prev/next_alpha)

So all looks good (and thanks Chris).   :applaud:

Like blah69 I'd prefer if the letter jumped to appears in the upper left so you're presented with probably a full page but I'm not overly fussed about it since I presume your ideal is to replicate the "mechanical" jukebox so I'm more than happy to live with the program as it currently is.
