80's movies (that are still good)

We've seen quite a few more 80's movies over the last few weeks. Can you believe my wife had never seen Over The Top?!? (She loved it BTW).

Anyways, I saw "They Live" for the 1st time last night. I can only say one thing about it: HOW DID I NEVER SEE THIS MOVIE?!?

I loved it, plain and simple. The wife enjoyed it quite a bit too, but she did not care for the ending much. I think it might have had something to do with the nekkid chick. I thought the final scene was classic. "What's wrong babe?"

I recently saw The Toxic Avenger for the first time and I can't believe I never even heard of this movie before.  It's the ultimate 80s B-movie and incredibly hilarious.

Next on my list to see is Class of Nuke 'em High which I'm hoping will be funny, but it's always a crap shoot with B-movies.

What about the classic fight scene?

You mean the one where they beat the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of each other in the alley? That was one of the best real man fights I've seen in a movie. No jap slappy crap, just two guys going at it.
"Why you dirty motha f..." I laughed my butt off at that point.

It's a great fight scene because it just last FOREVER. Such a long scene, but not too over the top. (And considering Piper was in it, anyone else would've loaded the fight with wrestling moves, but Carpenter's smarter than that)

I prefered hearing about the crazy facts from the movie and his hilarious comments over looking at a pretty face.  I can still remember several of his stories, such the story how Godzilla was originally called Gojira (which is much more common knowledge today) and a removed scene from Maximum Overdrive involving an exploding blood pack and a steamroller made some of the directors friends throw up when he showed them the dailies.  Looks like some people are pushing to bring his show back, which would be pretty awesome.

Anyways, there were great B-movies on both shows, and no I didn't miss out on Up All night, I just missed these movies

Joe Bob was the man.  My friend and I watched his show every weekend.  Best source of boobs on basic cable!

The Goonies was just....well, let's just say only kids five years my junior liked it (kind of like duper rangers)...and girls, but they didn't count. Buckaroo Bonzai was just...my buddy would say, 'it's so stupid it's funny'. I loved him anyway.

My dad liked him a lot. They had the same kind of humor.


I've been through a few spells of movie nostalgia in the last few years, but I don't think there are any anyone hasn't said - many of them I still have yet to see again - Oh, wait, maybe The Devil in Miss Jones 4. Absolute classic.

How about Disney's "The Black Hole" ?

I thought that movie rocked back in the day.  Maybe it's better to leave that one as a warm fuzzy memory.  I remember we went to see it at the early show and then snuck in to see The Blues Brothers later.

Look for early appearances of Sam Raimi and Joel Coen as guards in Spies Like Us. As for the movie, it has a few decent moments, but it's nothing spectacular.

Night of the Comet is great. Another so-bad-it's-good Kelly Maroney film is Chopping Mall (aka Killbots).

The Ninja trilogy (Enter, Return, and Domination) isn't on DVD, but can be found other ways. (Matter of fact, Enter the Ninja is on Hulu)

I have that on DVD. It was one of my favorites as a kid. I sooooo wanted to build one of those things, just so I could wear a mask and eat Cheetos!

I did not think the movie held up well though. It was still awesome up till the point the stupid aliens came into the picture.

It's called Explorer(s). Another early River Phoenix (dork with glasses no less!) flick. Ethan Hawke, too, before anybody knew who he was. The thing is, they could've built it out of anything. Essentially, they could've not built anything, and just used the 'bubble' as a ship, as that's really what was the ship.

Ah yes - Janet Jones - my wife and I were just joking about this the other night, she was way hot. It also had Mitch Gaylord - one of the 84 olympic gymnasts in it.

Which reminds me - who remembers RAD? Another 84 gymnast was in that, Bart Conner. He actually lives about about 30 seconds away, I have always wanted get him to sign a copy of it, just because it is so bad.

I still like that one, and I watch it every now an then.  My wife still hates it.

Krull was just really bad. And, for being two hours, it seemed to have little plot coherence. Plus they got the guy who did the music for Star Trek II and it sounded like he basically ripped off of it. Love the game, though.

I remember that one because my friend and I were the only two people in the cinema    For that  matter, what about Legend with a very young Tom Cruise before he went all loopy and Scientologyly. Or Dragonslayer with Peter MacNicol  as a musclebound hero no less  A bit different from the role he played in Ally Mbeal

I watched Heavy Metal again recently. I can say it was my last time. And on that note, how about 80s Rated-R movies that are still good? Risky Business was still okay. Stripes wasn't bad. Some yet to see:

I still enjoy Robocop, which I'm sure has been mentioned already.  Something I found interesting that I just learned a few weeks ago, Robocop was originally going to be rated X (this was before NC-17 existed), so they removed a fair amount of the gore to get it to rated R.  I believe the now released "unrated" version is the original X-rated cut of the movie.

I watched RoboCop again before I started my 80's binge. That movie held up EXTREMELY well. Hell, it was even better because I understood more of the movie since I am an adult now.

I don't see the love for Stripes. Half of it was good, but the other half sucked, and it did not hold up well.
